So are the Westboro Church funeral protests. Just because something is within the letter of the law doesn't mean it is a good idea.
Terrible analogy and you know it.comparing law abiding gun owners who are hurting nobody with westboro is a cheap attempt to insult their character.

The guy in the op notified police before that he was going out in public.he is military and serves this country. He deserves more respect than childish insults.

You guys can do better than that.

Good for him, exercising his legal right. Regardless if others don't agree he is 100 percent within his rights and nothing he did was illegal.

Name calling only makes others look dumb not this law abiding citizen.

Hey look at this tool obeying the law!! Lol right guys? Guys?

You do an awesome job playing the idiot nutter conservative.

I don't see a difference. They are both people seeking attention at the emotional expense of others. His military status doesn't change the fact that he was being a complete and total douchebag.

well JC Penney is ground zero for government oppression after all.
JC Penney allows Ellen to be their spokesperson. Obviously, they need someone to remind them what real America stands for.

Just wanted to point this out for the sake of discussion, but he had no "legal right" to carry there. His carrying of the firearm was only allowed because JC Penny permitted it. His Second Amendment rights meant fuck all in this context.

Seriously, people assume the amendments give them carte blanche.

False.

The amendments say the GOVERNMENT can't restrict your right. The Mall, JCPennys etc can all say "fuck off" and get out or theyll have you arrested for trespassing.

The amendments don't even preclude the govt from restricting your rights in certain situations.

Golden Domers are chickenshit!!
Terrible analogy and you know it.

This man knows what's up. It's a terrible analogy because the Westboro folks are actually flexing their First Amendment rights out in public spaces. This guy was carrying his weapon on private property. People can do little to stop the Westboro folks from spewing their vile shit because they're cloaked in the First Amendment. If JC Penny had asked this guy to take his weapon and leave, there was fuck all he could do about it besides leave.

From an international perspective, i find it hilarious that Americans are complaining about someone legally carrying an unloaded rifle in public.

Well, Snoopen, I find it very telling that you have yet to respond to the very astute question, "How do people know that the gun is unloaded?"

You already knew your entire opinion on the matter was totally fucked by that question, so you pretended it wasn't asked.

Very telling, indeed.

And Wesboro is NOT law-abiding? He's looking for attention just like them. And you think it's okay and "good on him" to strike fear in everyone by carrying a large rifle on his back?

I don't support this guy in this. It may have been legal, but how were the shoppers and workers supposed to know?

They probably didn't want to piss him off, especially since they don't know if it's loaded or not. This guy is a fucking jackass, and most likely caused a panic for no good reason.

Seriously, this is why it's wrong.

Do you want to be the manager who has to say "sir, get the fuck out"?

It's intimidation and he should be arrested for harassing the public.

It's almost as if some gun owners are too stupid and self-centered to realize that no one is going to automatically assume you're sane and have no foul intentions if you're walking around with a large tool that has the primary utility of destroying things.

It's pretty easy to tell if there is no magazine in a rifle.

No it's not. People see the gun, and they freak out. It's a gun. What is it doing in a clothing store. Why does this guy have it? He's not wearing a cop uniform, and cops don't carry assault rifles on a regular basis so what's going on?

You shouldn't assume that it's easy to tell because not everyone is experienced with guns.

Sure, if you're relatively close and you know what you're looking for. The average person doesn't know fuck-all about weaponry and will be concentrating on the stock and the barrel of the weapon and freaking out.

Is America turning into that situation in a movie where someone puts a gun on the table and then asks "Are we going to have a problem?".

Because there's legally nothing wrong with it? It's a very different perspective on the 'outside', i've read a lot of the commentary on pro/anti guns and personally i'm against it.

I don't know. Women can freely walk around topless in many states but most don't because we're all aware it's widely inappropriate. Legal or not, I think we can all agree that the social implications are as (if not more) important.

It's pretty easy to tell if there is no magazine in a rifle.

It's also pretty easy to put a magazine IN a rifle. Just because it isn't loaded ATM doesn't necessarily mean all is well and good.

EDIT: *points below* Daaammnnn yoooouuuuu...

Didn't some judge recently get in trouble for putting his gun on the bench and making some joke about killing someone in the courtroom?

Didnt he also call police beforehand to ensure it was legal to do this?
I see Ar15s out in public sometimes. Dont really think anything of it. Usually people selling the gun. Especially right now. People buying them up like crazy.

You know I'm pro gun but goddamn people like that piss me off. They're not helping the cause one damn bit by carrying an assault rifle be it loaded or unloaded in public like that. In fact they're making it worse. A hell of a lot worse. They're damn well doing it to be antagonistic. That's not a smart thing to do either when people are already upset.

I know the guy says it's unloaded why have a mag in it if it is? How can any tell it's unloaded if you have a mag in it, empty or not?

the news report said that wasn't his first time going into the store carrying an assault rifle, so it looks like I definitely won't be going to that JC Penny anytime soon

This was local news for me. They said the guy has done this before.

He is an idiot looking for attention and to stir things up. What he doesn't realize is that he's making the pro gun crowd look bad, like extremists.

Well the question was "how are people supposed to know it's unloaded?" And that's how. Will some not know how to know? Sure. But there is a clear and simple way to know if it is unloaded. Pistols are much harder to tell, actually.
