Halo |OT14| They call it Halo

Fallen Xbot (cannot continue gaining levels in this class)
What's the deal with the mini cove glitch in spartan ops? Is there a known trigger for it? Just tried to play one of the ragnarok missions with a friend just getting into halo, on legendary, and ran into this and had to quit. I remember having it happen to me once solo as well on the same mission iirc.

The Covenant when they spawn in the pods are actually miniature, I assume sometimes they don't get larger the closer they get to the map.

DMR needs to be killed with fire. Most people are agreeing, why not just pretend, that it never existed?

Edit: Anyone watching X-Games Aspen? Those girl Snowboarders are pretty cute.

I want to go Snowboarding, aswell. :'(

AGL semis going on right now. Warriors v Legendary - the Extraction game that was just played was really fun to watch (Ninja POV for the entire match - with a listen in - and they lost after trash talking for the first five minutes).

I just cant' get that we get a solid starting weapon and some people want to kill it, how about just buff up the Carbine and BR a little?

Time to respond:
I'm sorry my Internet keeps disconnecting every 4 mins for some reason so it's hard to reply.

But my point was, globally introducing strafe speed to counteract one weapon will change the way the game plays. Sure you could lower the aim assist on the DMR but it still has a 3x scope, all you'd do is make it harder to get kills but people would become better with it.

Scope knockout won't come back because of the introduction of the flinch mechanic and the perk which counteracts it.

Maybe I'm just not getting my point across clearly, but making it harder to shoot a mini sniper doesn't make it stop being a mini sniper. Sure people could evade shots better by zigzagging with strafe, lower aim assist means head shots are going to be harder, slower rate of fire would all but make the weapon useless because people would run away or get out of sight before you got the kill.

Anyways, I've said my thoughts on the DMR though, and I completely understand what you, Steelyuhas and bigshow are saying.
Strafe speed: we are not talking about increasing it to affect one weapon, it needs increased as a fundamental design criterion. It is my opinion (and many others I assume) that an effective strafe is only benificial to halo gameplay. That can be expanded on (and has been) if needed.

Secondly, you are talking about what can be done to the DMR in H4's sandbox to balance it, which is of course limited by the other mechanics (namely perks) that 343 included. I'm talking about general halo balancing methods that can be applied to future titles or hypotheticals (like we're doing now.) So in general, you combat something being a "mini-sniper" by increasing the difficulty to aim at range rather than introducing randomness to accuracy. I want my shots to go where I am aiming, make it harder to aim.

I understand what you're getting at though. Perks and AA's really diminish what can be changed in this game since you risk making one useless.

Can we see this magic data you have that doesn't exist?

The DMR ruins every mid-sized/big map and it makes weapons like the BR pretty useless.

It also forces you to use it, because you don't have any chance at longer distances.

People hate fun.

It is known.

I don't have that much fun in Halo 4, but I would like to have it.

I know, it was a little bit over the top and I shouldn't say "kill it". A simple nerf of the DMR or a buff of other weapons would help probably...

Look at those opinions.

Every person ever must agree with that.

Because the issue is that there aren't any significant factors making the DMR hard to use at range, combined with a combination of high assist and sluggish movement that makes it hard to respond no matter what weapon you're using. Regardless of how powerful other weapons may or may not be, Halo 4's gunplay as is is hard on most maps that attempt to have an interesting central flow, at least maps that are bigger than "tiny." Like Ragnarok.

This is probably the reason why Halo 4's map pool is so heavily constituant of twisted piles of debris. Making sure that lines of sight and movement are messy is the easiest way to make sure that things actually flow.

I'm sure the strafe speed has been reduced since the E3 build. I know I commented at the time that the strafe felt really quick and meant you had a really good chance of turning a fight around when someone pings you first.

I have to derail the thread for a bit, but I have a question, since this is once of the moest active threads of GAF I might as well ask it here.
It's a question regarding calculus/ differential equations. What does it mean to have a funtion or relation between two absolute signs? Like this: ||g(x)||. I can't find it in my textbook, can't ask anywhere else cause it's almost 11pm.
Hopefully you've had this answered already. That usually denotes an operation called a norm. There are different types, and it's similar to absolute value applied to matrices and vectors. However, you said this is a calculus problem so that may not make sense. Put it in context of whatever you're learning, I'd say it's just absolute value.

Now, you are getting ridiculous...

Of course, I'm speaking of my opinions and nobody forces you to agree with them.

Edit:
They should reduce the size of the maps to reduce the DMR's advantage.

fuck yea MIDSHIP.

But this doesn't fix the problem for big team. I would agree with maps like Midship, though. Hopefully the next map pack will include some really good competitive small maps.

If you want to nerf the DMR just nerf its damn auto aim.

Remember that picture posted here a while back? How the BR maintains a red reticle for maybe half of Haven, and the DMR is red reticle anywhere on Haven.

In its state right now the thing is super annoying.

What would buffing the BR do for the fact you can shoot across 80% of the map with a DMR. I don't know why others don't see this. It completely ruins BTB and makes open maps basically one side pinging the other from a distance.

It's not a solid starting weapon, it's a powerful starting weapon that essentially makes all other starting weapons obsolete. Pair a DMR with a boltshot and the no flinch perk, and you can pretty much take down anyone, anytime and almost anywhere on the map. Add in personal ordnance, and a person barely has to move at all. He can take down users from a distance with ease and those that get close are destroyed by a boltshot.

Something needs to change, it's just not fun anymore. If you don't want to remove it, do what steel, bigshow, Zoso posted and increase strafe ability, reduce auto aim, make the rate of fire slower. And like Rakka also posted. I am +1200 with the DMR, and like +300 with the boltshot. I wonder what these numbers would be like in another few months.

If the option was completely mine at this moment of time I'd just nuke the DMR completely. I'm not convinced of its necessity in the sandbox, provided there's an alternative like the BR. And its range is detrimental.

I think I found what it is. It's simlar to a modulus, if X is a vector, then ||X|| = SQRT((X1)²+(X2²)). Thanks.

You just posted that "most people agree" that the DMR sucks.

BTB is already fucked. Its got vehicles, its bad, its got guests and shitty matches.

In fact I would say this BTB focused map size distribution is one of the main factors in how destroyed H4's population is. Everyone plays Slayer and then gets bored of the two maps constantly picked and calls it a day.

Huh? I read most of the times that people think it is to versatile and it should be on map weapon. Also many people think a BR and a DMR together in one game isn't good.

I did not get the impression that he meant the DMR "sucks"

Not the point I'm trying to make, I'm saying you can't just say that "most people agree" on something based on your impression of what you read on a forum.

I like to look at it as an offensive counter sniping weapon. A moderate issue with Halo 3 BTB was that when someone had the sniper, they could easily* become a death machine. The things that could stop it were a vehicle or another sniper. With the DMR still in the game, and as a pickup, there's another threat to the sniper. As a bonus, it can give competitive players a utility weapon similar to the CE pistol.

*assuming they were slightly above average
