Media Create Sales: Week 4, 2013 (Jan 21 - Jan 27)

Putting all their eggs in one basket sounds dangerous.

Sounds like a good and bad idea...

Good because there'd be less systems to buy (this is more consumer focused).

Bad because Nintendo wouldn't be able to make as much money with only one product, and if it doesn't do well they can't fall back with one of their systems at least doing well as seen with 3DS's success and Wii U's meh sales so far (this is more business focused).

I'm not position of the financials obviously but a single platform would alleviate software and marketing costs which is an obvious problem, especially when handheld games require Wii budgets and console games require HD budgets.

I also question the performance of Wii Fit U. Casual titles (non AC) on 3DS did very little impact, and I always lump Wii Fit into that category.

I'm not so sure about that. The only casual titles that really underperformed with respect to previous entries was Brain Training. However, to me it seems pretty clear that Style Savvy brought a lot of female audience on the platform, with its almost 300k mark and the Pink 3DS XL. NSMB2 also sold very well, and it did have an impact on the sales of the hardware. Art Academy... Well, did it have an impact on DS? It still put a respectable YTD.

Nintendo has a monopoly on the doomed and saved industry in japan.

Wii U doing bad, and i'm very curious about what's going to happen half a year from now (i am thinking positively).

Vita keeps being as much a non-factor as ever. I'm wondering if, and how much if it happens, Soul Sacrifice will move hardware. Probably not that much, but 30k wouldn't be wildly unexpected for that week.

How about this: if I ignore every title outside the top 6 and overlook the number of units sold inside the top 6, the Vita and 3DS are on equal footing for software sales this week.

How d'ya like them apples?

Yep, Vita is clearly dominating 3DS. Heh.

Anything less than 20 million and people will be singing it's downfall from the roofs. It made enemies for some reason. I'm thinking closer to 5 million WW when it's all said and done.

They will have some game before Summer. In the West Q1 is not so horrible with also MH, Rayman, Lego. The important thing is that they will have games whene the other two platforms will be in their post-launch fatigue. The one year lead is useful to re-evaluate the strategy without worrying too much about direct competition (see: 3DS). They could cut the price for the holiday season, and that's because they launched one year earlier. When the other platforms will be released, Wii U will have supposedly Mario Kart, Yoshi, and other AAA games. I mean, Q1 and Q2 look horrible, but a one year advantage might be useful.

There should be no "might" about it. Even during the next gen "post launch fatigue" there will likely be 3rd party games coming out for both platforms. The issue with Nintendo is that their 3rd party support is miserable and throwing a few games out there without that 3rd party support is a miserable way to launch a console. There is also a risk to launching before you are ready and that risk is that you completely kill excitement for your console.

Wii U is heading towards Vita levels without any software to save it for 2 months. Despite the fact that the 3DS had lulls Nintendo was able to pull a lot of 3rd party support together with Resident Evil, Kingdom Hearts, etc. to make the platform look like there was a future outside of Nintendo for the platform. Right now, besides a person being extremely optimistic the 3rd party situation on Wii U looks to be disastrous.

3DS wasn't tanking and it was already 15000Y when those casual games were released.
Wii Fit U is going to underperform badly and follow the fate of Brain Training if the system is selling below 15k at the time of its release and Nintendo does nothing.

Nah, that's way too high. It'll be in the thousands, not millions.

I mean the LTD will be 1.2 million. If it was weekly sales...Armageddon lol.

I can't believe you took the 'equal footing' post seriously.

Oh that was a joke? Damn, I thought with the whole 2/3 of top 6 thing and at the end of the post you said "how do like them apples", you were being serious. My bad.

3rd party games will be also coming out for PS360. Or do you think Activision, Ubisoft and EA will shift immediately the development process to new platforms? Madden and Call of Duty will sell big on PS360 for years. I mean, it's really simplistic to think that Nintendo will go co,pletely wrong; and MS and Sony will be completely right.

Yes. It's SCEJ biggest game ever and probably the biggest new IP Sony in general has ever put on a handheld. Sony has been advertising the living shit out of it and it's one of the most hyped games of Japan for 2013. How big will the hardware boost be? I'm not sure. I think it'll do more than persona, miku and gravity rush. This weeks software sells actually wasn't bad. I didn't expect much from a hentai minigame collection and a niche first person dungeon crawler.

not even close.

EDIT:

Good sales for Demon Gaze and Monpiece by the way. It shows that there is a market for the Vita.

it shows there is a market for those kind niche games on VITA. I don't think it shows there is a market for VITA. If anything, it shows otherwise.

I never said they wouldn't be releasing for PS3/360. That just makes it even worse for wii U if those games aren't on that platform. Bringing it back to Japan if 3rd parties don't start coming out significantly to show some support for Wii U I see no place for it to survive in this market. Unless Nintendo magically comes up with an amazing system seller Nintendo can't save a system by themselves in a territory where consoles are becoming increasingly irrelevant.

Wii Fit U most likely belongs to the games that will see huge drops this generation. Wii Sports U the same.

Well, we can't really compared Wii Fit U to the 3DS lol. But dont underestimate the power of fitness. There are some serious fitness buffs out there, with money to spend

Wii U seems to be in an unrecoverable Vita-like position. Or worse.

Way too fucking early to call, Jett. Unlike the Vita, there are a shit load of first party heavy hitters to land first. If it still under performs afterwards, then we can pick out coffins.

See? Your assumption is: Nintendo will completely screw up. I think, though, that PS360 will damage more PS4 and Nextbox than Wii U. But we will see.

Considering the Nintendo we've seen that launched the 3DS and Wii U, it's not a terrible assumption to make. I ever said they would completely screw up. I think Nintendo will push to get their big Wii U games out by the end of the year, but I question their impact (or how long it will last) if (and i used the word if) no one else is backing them. And don't get me wrong I don't expect anything out of the PS4 in Japan, but this goes back to the west where 3rd parties who are making HD games will be looking to sell them.

Edit: I think it would be a huge surprise if Soul Sacrifice broke 200k.

Also I have to commend Nintendo with Animal Crossing. Maybe if they had put the same level of effort into games like NSMB2 they could have also seen repeats of earlier performances.

The game is not on any preorder charts AFAIK. I know people want it to do MH like numbers or even GE like numbers, but really, be happy if it does 1/20 of MH4 sales.

I also think games like DQVII, MH, Pokemon, even DQX port and definitely PS4 are more hyped than SS. Only looking at Vita's releases, I actually think some of Namco's ports like Tales of Hearts R, GE, Jump Stars, One Piece 2 are more hyped than SS.

Besides gran tourismo yes

I take it you're talking about recent games? MNG is bigger too.

It's going to be a fierce battle between the Wii U and Vita. I have no doubt that the PS4 will also fall to these terrible numbers.

Actually, it shows the opposite since no hardware was moved. It showed that existing userbase will maybe support the platform in the future, allowing for ultra-niche results.
The way i see it, it shows that there is market for games on the Vita, and that the Vita is a good viable alternative for certain titles :)

-Vita hardware; this week showed what I already said last year: it's useless to advertise the line-up of Feb / Mar when it's relying on existing userbase. If 50k software cannot move any units (or just a few hundreds), the platform is dead. The market has spoken: it does not want Vita.
When do you think it would be better to advertise the February and March line-up? Did you expect these two games to move much hardware?

Personally i dont think it is useless, same thing with what Nintendo did with the recent WiiU Nintendo Direct. Even if it wont affect the hardware sales at once, the other alternative would be not show anything, and i think that is worse.

I hope the Digimon Adventure numbers are good, I've completed most of the game (onto the bonus dungeon/story now, so an hour away from completion) and have really enjoyed it. Hoping they do more games based on the anime like this title.

Anyone have a graph that compares the weekly sales of Wii U with Vitas launch?

No graph but Wii U is well ahead. It would take around 20 weeks of the WiiU selling zero units of hardware to fall behind the Vita (when you line up their launches).

Its quite amusing to see that the 3DS and the WiiU are canceling each other. To be fair, I think, if Nintendo didn't have the money maker-3DS, they would have tried to resolve the WiiUs problem, but I guess the 3DS is helping them stay afloat.

Also, Dang at Animal Crossing, that is DS-level of sales (And legs)

Also, I like the fact that N1 have been dependent on Disgeaea, One game company (Mancheter United of gaming)

If Nintendo somehow made a hybrid console that fused both lines together they would have a seriously unstoppable array of 1st party titles that really would allow them to compete and possibly dominate the market.

Vita will definitely take the lead in a few weeks. But can Wii U go lower than Vita's worst week yet?

Stay tuned.

If it does and it's not the week before a big pricecut, nintendo should just focus on the 3DS. Game and Wario, and Wii Fit should at least keep it above that though along with residual NSMBU effects.

I would argue by that by the time Style Savvy 3DS was out, 3DS has a much better value than when Wii Fit U comes out for the Wii U. WFU looks to me as a game that benefits from a larger userbase instead of expanding it.

Looks like Wii U was bolstered over Vita for awhile by having actual desirable software (NSMBU and NL), but hindered with less software overall and by being a console.

I think we're all either getting ahead of ourselves, or writing some fan fiction on what we wish to happen to Nintendo because they 'aren't the same any more' and they 'penny pinch' when maybe its the fact that Nintendo are are toy company that started off making playing cards while Microsoft is a software giant with billions of dollars invested into networking and software and Sony is a multinational conglomerate corporation, I mean that cant be it right?

I mean really, people should keep away from the sensationalist 'Nintendo/Sony/Microsoft doomed' stuff unless they are able to keep their word on it and be prepared to eat crow when the inevitable happens and Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft all have successful consoles that make profit, make their customers happy and continue on their merry way. Just maybe.

A well written sober, rational post that is objective and balanced?!? From a Junior member in the sales thread...

Poor Nippon Ichi. Doomed to continually make Disgaea entries since no matter what they try, no one buys any of their original titles anymore :(

Such a stark contrast from the PS2 era when their non-Disgaea games would still do 50-90k openings.

Probably.
I was holding out on hopes of a localization, since this looks to be a welcome successor to ZHP, but it might not make it...

it will, I mean they published fucking Legacista and that sold like 4 copies, I dont think they'll pass up anything on PS3

Paper Mario hits the half million. Is it the most successful Paper Mario ever yet?

Going by Media Create numbers, yes.

New Leaf isn't doing DS levels at all. It's absolutely monstering what it was doing on the DS. It'd have to sell literally nothing for the next 10 weeks to allow Wild World to catch up.

I like how Nippon Ichi has become so insignificant that no one here is even surprised that their major title from the Disgaea team on the PS3 has cratered. Lulz. :(
I'm honestly shocked they even made Zettai Hero Project 2: Look We Got Noizi Ito To Do The Designs, Please Buy It This Time. Selling it as "the exciting new game from the Disgaea" team worked wonderfully last time, after all, and on a "healthier" system for their main market. Damn shame, ZHP's easily the best game they've made in years.

Hope Play-Asia ships my copy this week.
