PS4 controller: touchpad + share button + dualshock

In all likelihood, we're not talking about a touch screen, but rather a touch pad like the Ouya controller or the back of the Vita.

If it doesn't add much cost to the overall cost and isn't intrusive I'm ok with it. I'm not ok with putting something for the sake of putting it. Like using it for browsing the OS. That is not worth tacking on a 30-100 dollars for.

I can't even think of a proper non gimmicky usage for touchscreen that can't be replicated by buttons other then scribbling and gestures.

Both are pointless to me. Just give me back triggers like the N64, Vita's D-Pad, and make the controller a bit taller and wider.

Well you need to play more games

I like the sounds of this, especially the ablity to share video and screenshots. This will do nicely but I kind of want to see it in person to see how it works. Just please don't make the system too costly!

What i hope to see:

Ba5RFaU.jpg

-sticks in the same spot
- 2 extra face buttons
- Vita d-pad
- improved shoulder buttons
- UBS port on bottom to accept accessories such as...

The two extra buttons could be better, but I'd become a SonyPony over night if it looked more or less like that (minus the chrome).

That looks hideous.
Not to mention charging while playing is going to be difficult with the USB placement.
How do you even hold the controller and use the accessory pads while playing at that location, one handed?

Come up with a proper response and a detailed one instead of saying something like that please. Convince me why it'll be helpful.

There isn't a better response. You literally have to play games that use a touch screen well but I know simply posting screenshots, in addition to derailing the thread, will just prompt "meh, I don't see why x couldn't be done with buttons" from you

Just look at games like The World Ends With You, the DS Zeldas, Ouendan/Theathrythm, and any game that has complex menus. These all pose very clear benefits over simply using buttons

Really really happy if it's a touch pad and not a touch screen. That can work.

Also thrilled to hear about DVR like functionality for recording stuff. There are so many moments that happen and only afterwards you're like... shit, I wish I could have saved that moment!

All in all this sounds awesome.

It would be awesome if the touchpad could be in a position where you can use it as a mouse in third and first person shooters.

I'm imagining aiming with a right analog stick that uses one level of sensitivity (the normal level) and then gliding your thumb over to the touchpad for a second level of aiming sensitivity for fine-tuning really precise shots. You could go back and forth between pad and stick very easily and quickly with your thumb.

That is, if the pad itself isn't suitable for aiming on the whole, on its own. If it was it would be fantastic. I guess they can tune it a lot better than PC devs can tune for a laptop trackpad given that it's of a known size.

why are people glad it's a touchpad over a touchscreen? a touchscreen would mean a built-in keyboard on every controller, as well as a small screen to put stuff on. i see little value in a touchpad.

I got it wrong when I figured Sony would go with more of a Vita-esque controller for their system to mirror some of the WiiU functionality.

Although I suppose there's no reason they can't incorporate that functionality into certain ports for people who own Vitas. I'm actually sort of glad to be wrong here. This controller should be much more economical, the touchpad should prove its utility quite a bit and I love the idea of being able to share game footage at the touch of a button. Very smart social application that I hope they'll go in further detail on three weeks from now.

To add to the above, before Vita was unveiled we (or some of us) wondered about using the rear touch for aiming. A touchpad centrally placed should be in a much better position for a variety of things...the barrier to use should be much much smaller in terms of moving your thumb between stuff on the front. With rear touch on Vita you basically have to 'reset' your hand posture to go between rear touch and other stuff. That may not be the case here so it could get mixed in to combined control with other things a lot more easily. Will have to see (and hold) the new design to get a feel for that properly though.

I'm good with a touchpad if and only if the start/select buttons still exist somewhere else. If they're designated areas on the touchpad instead, it becomes next to useless as a gesture area.

Ugh... please don't stick with the current shape/stick placement/'triggers'. Honestly, that alone would sink my enthusiasm for the system markedly.

And the addition of the touchpad features likely means it'll be more difficult/expensive for a 3rd party to release a halfway comfortable replacement controller.

I think a break apart controller makes the most sense. Imagine also being able to clip into any smartphone/tablet for Wii-U like functionality. I don't necessarily care for this feature but there are more possibilities with a design as such. Also, it should integrate perfectly with VR gaming.

I just hope the sticks are more accurate and in an off-set position, like the 360 controller. I've hated the feel of the Dualshock since the PSX days. At this point, I'm feeling pretty sure that I'd like to make the PS4 my primary system next gen, but I want a better controller...

And yeah, the triggers are awful.

YES! This is excellent news. I'm glad they won't go with a pad like controller etc. Less this thing costs the better.

And please for the love of god don't change the stick placement, I want it the way it is.

The share button stuff sounds brilliant. Hope they allow us to upload directly to youtube too.

This is great and I'm glad too. Not too expensive controller with some unique features = best controller

Yeah, I want stick placement to stay as it is. A bit better for games that use the D-Pad seriously, especially if The Claw may be useful, and if I wanted the sticks switched so badly I'd just get an Xbox too next gen.

This is what I was talking about, use it like a trackpad with your right thumb to replace the mouse. I could finally play shooters without being annoyed about the lack of mouse and it would completely change shooters on consoles. Maybe I'm being too optimistic here though or I'm asking too much because I can't think of a position that would be comfortable for that function...

Well I think the fact that the whole thing is supposedly clickable is telling about intended use for 'aim and select'... another weakness of vita's reartouch addressed.

Hard to say though until we see it applied. Very curious if any devs will apply it to aiming. I would immediately prefer it to stick aiming if it worked well and the pad traversal was sensitive enough and gave a wide enough aiming range without too much 'thumb reset'.

I guess my point was I would rather not have to be going back and forth between those 2 positions.
You basically have to be sliding the controller up and down in your hands, vs just moving your thumbs to the locations.

Ah, I see what you're saying.

Touch screen

YES! YES! YES!

Finally, SOMEONE that agrees with me about more buttons! I feel like they would add so much more room to work with when you have games like Dark Souls, and Skyrim. Shooters, too, could benefit from that, especially heavy handed ones like Battlefield where features like squad mechanics are streamlined for the sake of controllers. Four measly face buttons seems so simple to me.

I additionally feel that bundling/having a launch keypad like the 360 would be a big important thing, as a Miiverse type system would require a keypad.

Its a gimmick on Vita, it will be a gimmick on PS4.
Well, the difference I think is that it's on the front, and it's not redundant. Still, without SEEING what you're manipulating I suspect it's just going to be for extra buttons that would've been better physically. Especially Start/Select, I hope they at worst go the 3DS route and just tuck tiny ones underneath. I can live with that, just don't take them off entirely, I need to be damn sure I pressed it to pause.
