DF: Orbis vs Durango Spec Analysis

Plinko

Wildcard berths that can't beat teams without a winning record should have homefield advantage
Yet another confirmation of always online. Sad. Really hoping Sony doesn't do it.

Achieving twice the flops per core is not something trivial that can be obtained with simple tweaks.
If it's true the cores they're using can't even be called Jaguar, they're just something else much more powerful and that goes against all the known speculation so far.
So before an other 'secret sauce' case is created it would be better to just relax and see how PS4 actual specs compare to the leaked/rumored ones in a few days just to begin with. Then we'll get an idea about how these leaks have been accurate so far and we'll continue with the next Xbox speculation.

There's no way Sony would do always online. They have a huge market in Europe. The only way it would happen is by region which would piss off a lot of westerners.

Planetside 2 runs at 10-15 fps in bigger fights on cpus more powerful than what's supposed to be in ps4.

You aren't worried because most games have been designed around the super weak console cpus.

Just the UI of many mmos (yes that's right, the UI on its own) can bring a low/mid end cpu to its knees.
Turn off the ui in tera (which uses scaleform) and your framerate will double.

Most of the design features of console vs the PC is from limited GPU and ram capabilities, not CPU limitations. Also, CPU was highly limited because of the extensive audio processing.

I expect this realisation for both consoles. Starting next week. =)

Somewhat off-topic, but...

Has there been any consideration of Xenon and Xenos being integrated for the OS/Kinect or low power tasks? I seem to recall rumors of a second set of processors. If so, obviously, BC would be in the bag as well.

Perhaps they are better integrated thanks to the display planes?

Would something like this work?

It's frowned upon in this topics to tease... :p

Yes. It is.

To all: I hope your sources don't mind your accounts being on the line, regardless of whether or not you choose to divulge who that source is. Because they are. "Things change" doesn't really work for me when you choose to spill information.

Some people want some speculation to be rumors and others to be purely speculation.

Haha.

I think he's a dev. posts on b3d a lot, but not sure how certain the cpu rumour is. I'm glad durango's cpu is twice as powerful as pathetic netbook jaguar but I hope orbis has some modifications too at least. This sounds like a reversal where microsoft is focusing on cpu more this time and sony on gpu. Doesn't make sense. I hope we get more details next week. Once I know next gen cpus and gpus are stronger then people thought, I won't have to worry about the hardware anymore.

Well I stand by what I revealed, though I'm only going to be around a few more days so it's not like this is a big risk to my account.

It's cool to know MS spent at least some time and effort to get a better cpu. I don't know why that was a priority but I guess Cell helped with graphics a lot.

Don't understand why some people started reacting badly about the info BG is passing, did I miss the bad news?

The bad news is that according their source, always online is 100% confirmed

These speculations are all over the place. Ugh. I can't wait till this is all over on the 20th. For PS4 at least.

Do you guys think we'll get more, real, specs for durango once sony announces theirs?

EDIT- Where are you going, bgassassi?

EDIT: This post is pretty silly. How is everything in the 720 GPU doubled? Even the bits of the ROPs? LMAO!

Where is the confusion? All the liars will punished. Though I do not hold the power of final judgement, seems fair to me.

Think before you post.

Easy there partner, I've personally heard Orbis has a noticable power advantage over Durango. Akin to Gamecube --> Xbox. DICE and Ubi are also rumored to love the machine and had a healthy hand in criticism.

I agree. The GPU in the PS4 is going to be better, it's basically confirmed in every rumor, the CPU being stronger is new to everyone here, so that might cause confusion.

If those third party publishing giants approve then there is less to fear than I had earlier anticipated. It is a good thing that you got your account back before 20th.

I don't need to take it easy because i was just asking a question. :)

Thank's for your info. And round and round we go. wow.

Lord Error

Insane For Sony
I actually wanted to wait until the 20th to say this, but I think if the dual camera of the orbis is standard, then it makes it easier to understand why those 4CUs are reserved for compute. From b3d, bkilian, one of the MS dev involved with kinect, said that without having a depth camera onboard, the cost of analyzing depth information from a normal camera in compute terms is in the hundreds of flops. From the vgleaks, the dual camera will enable some OS level face and hand tracking, so I won't be surprised if it is one of the application these reserved CUs will be working on. Of course I might be wrong as these are all speculation on my part.
If you're saying that those more or less dedicated compute units would be working full time on camera analysis, that's almost for sure not going to be the case. I really doubt those cameras would be running during gameplay for most games, other than those that would be made to use their functionality, of course. If that was the case, they'd never even mention those CUs could be used for various things, including graphics if required.

So now we have different developers going back and forth. Awesome.

No chance :p

Where is it realistic to draw the line? here are some options:

Crysis 1 on low medium setting @720p 60 fps

Crysis 1 on medium setting @720p 30 fps

Crysis 1 on high setting @480p cinematic 24 fps

BF3 on lowest setting @720p 60 fps

BF3 on medium setting @720p 30 fps

BF3 on highest setting @480p cinematic 24 fps

Durr, this is getting ridiculous.

You know if the difference is similar to xbox vs gcn then that makes what llherre said more correct. gcn, while not a match to the xbox in absolute terms could do alot of things better than the xbox although utlimately the xbox would come out on top. Llherre did say that both consoles were close, with somethings favoring one or the other, and that at the end of the day it will be another ps360 situation. I feel we will get more details as we go along, what with the rumor of the MEC kinect processor in durango and its particularly beastly audio dsp. I just think that at the end of the day, it will not be as clear cut as it seems.

So I'm assuming the double Jaguar performance is simply AMD not having to "double-pump" 256-bit wide SSE instructions through a 128-bit execution unit? That rumor's been floating around for a while publicly for the Durango, and I'm not completely convinced that works out to double the flops.

The problem is CG vs xbox is different than PS3vs360. That has leading more curious around here. Otherwise could have said PS3 vs 360 v2 if it will be repeat this gen situation.

It does make sense, because it lines up with the rumors that MS wants this machine to be a Win8 multitasking monster that does a lot more then just play games. Where as Sony wants something that a bit more of a traditional gaming machine and wants to focus on rendering.

edit: What I think one of the real questions, when comparing the Orbis vs Durango, is how the OS overhead will compare between the two? A lot of that extra flops on the CPU side of Durango could be offset by 2 cores being locked from games and reserved for the OS.

Remember the leaked MS document slides? Said the machine was 8x powerful than 360, but for games it will only be 6x, "2x" of the systems power being used by non gaming applications.

This is awesome news since Ubi has been pushing for higher specs for a while and since DICE's FB 2.0 engine will be powering all EA games next gen.

Aye, I hope they had more work on GPU side for their new engine. I have spent lot of money on GPU for my PC build. I would like to see more out of it worth.
