What about Age of Empires 1? I liked it better. Yeah the gameplay was simpler, but I preferred the earlier time period.

And shit, where's Age of Mythology?
Yeah AoE was amazing.

But AoE2 had bombard towers and cannon galleons. Bombard towers were the shit.

Oh shit oh shit oh shit...this could be incredible. If they get it working we need a GAF clan. I'm probably rusty as hell, it's been so long.

I was so casual, see: young and stupid, back when I used to play this I will need some training to get good.

Wasn't there some Microsoft thingy (I forget the name) in the main menu that let you play multiplayer online? Wonder what's going to happen with that.

But wait gaf hates ms they aren't for gamers anymore lol

That'll be fantastic. I remember when Microsoft was doing a deal where they were selling Age of Empires 3 on GWFL for a dime and I felt like it wasn't worth it. I'll easily drop $10 for the best Age of Empires game. I needs me some Black Forest.

HOLY YES.

The quoted text in the op mentioned "removing the Zone Related Code" which is obvious, since the Zone doesn't exist anymore, but what would that mean for online play? I guess it would just support LAN at that point unless they put in extra work for new multiplayer code.

EDIT: And yeah, they better do this to AoM. Like, for real.

That post was put up over a year ago by one of the original AoE 2 developers about his desire to update AoE2's source code.

It may have nothing to do with this leak or the current port, but could be a clue into what we are seeing now.

Great news if they are updating the game to modernize it a little, but the part about it not running and stuff is a little irksome being that it still runs fine for me (should I care that AMD or Nvidia have done what I consider to be their job by tweaking their drivers to work with more games properly?).

I wonder how they'll handle 1440p resolutions and such, as Age of Empires actually let you see more at higher resolutions iirc, unlike modern RTS games that keep the viewable area relatively equal.

Gotcha.

The implications that SOMEONE, whether at Microsoft or not, is working on AoE2 in 2013 are really interesting. Hopefully something comes out of this.

GAF we need to do a little detective work here.

If you look at the post from a year ago discussing the issues with hardware configurations, software compatibility and wide screen resolutions.

It was all posted by a guy named ES_MATTP

That obviously stands for Ensemble Studios, first name: Matt, last name initial: P

If you go and watch the Age of Empires 2 credits, you see a guy on there named Matt Pritchard.

We need to pick up the trail and see what this guy is up to now.

Fuck yes! Still my favorite RTS game of all time. Very very fond of the game when I was a kid. Was very disappointed when I installed it on my Win7 laptop years ago and had this graphic glitches all over the place. Would love to play the game again.

Also, its time for more

how do you turn this on

lol

If they could update the engine with modern graphics support, tweak it with the modern advances in RTS gameplay and give it the ability to do match making then that would be awesome. Last time I checked a few years ago there was a community of about 50-100 people still playing this online. If this could get back into the thousands it would be great.

YES! YES! YES!

My most beloved game of all time. I spent months playing the demo before getting the real thing and spent years playing it, both online (MSN Zone!) and offline, as well as designing custom maps and playing them as well.

I really hope that they bring in some sort of semi-official multiplayer support now. I don't play online mainly because due to the requirement of using third party software ever since MS shut down MSN Zone.
