Go offline on steam.
Connect to VPN to desired location.
Go online and let steam complete the Tomb Raider download.
Launch game.
Go offline again with game on.
Disconnect from VPN.
You can freely launch and exit the game with steam offline.

Edit: Shoryuken'ed

I dun goofed. I made sure Steam was offline and completely shut down (went to task manager to close all operations). I booted it up after I was connected to my VPN. I updated Tomb Raider to launch.

Then when it was done, I went into Offline Mode (I didn't launch it yet). Then I disconnected from VPN. When I tried to launch it (keep in mind i'm still in offline mode) - it launches, however when I click the "options" button in the menu, shit crashes.

Hmmmm.

Going to restart Steam with my VPN on, then launch it and do your steps.

Man, I wonder if this will run on my machine. Tempted as fuck to try though.

edit screw it, 36 euros? Bought.

Well, I do have a dedicated PhysX card =P

But this isn't PhysX. I doubt TressFX is running on that card. Right now I'm at the bow section of the game and I'm getting 60 fps.

Well, I have one as well (GTX 460) but as you say, this isn't PhysX. Maybe the actual game runs better than the benchmark with TressFX on. I'll see in a bit. I made the mistake of VPN into Japan and then launching game and choosing to download the optional videos, so now I'm waiting for the 2.2 Gb download of optional videos at 500kb/s speeds. Only 30 more mins. now. Hopefully during actual gameplay TressFx doesn't give the hit that the benchmark indicates it does.

Even more impressive is that her hair has perfect volume, sheen, and form despite the muddy terrain, burning forests, nasty swamps, dirt, blood splatters, and even cliffside gusts effecting it. You go Lara.

The game itself is pure sadist porn. Bad things seem to happen in threes, every five minutes from what I've played.

Made the same mistake you made. Just launch game again on a VPN connection and then go offline on steam. Problem solved.

Everything works now. Although for some reason, my options in launch menu does not work. It always crashes when I click it. However, I can change my options in game. So whatever. Weird. But game plays fine, and I'm off!

Is it supposed to be updating when unlocked?? This is what I did exactly.

I had steam on so I just exited steam. I then connected to VPNgates.com's AUS server and then relaunched steam. Tomb Raider then showed "Play" and I hit that and now it's updating and the minutes are just piling up to over an hour. wtf?

It has to download a tiny bit of data. Took me about 15 mins. myself. Hours though? Maybe try connecting to a different VPN such as Japan. Understand that you are essentially using your internet to connect to a server in another country and then surfing/downloading through that server/vm so speeds won't be blazing fast.

Progress.

Well It just hung for a sec so I closed it and relaunched it. This time while it was updating I disconnected the VPN and switched back to my main IP. It still is downloading though...

Edit: It seems to be faster now this way.

So far this game looks amazing. I'm running it on a GTX680 SLI maxed out, getting 65-77 FPS pretty constant. 2560x1600 too.

My only gripe is the TressFX looks ridiculous. I mean, there are times where I'm blown away by it. But then it will also flutter around too much, even when there isn't wind. Like in the opening scene of the game, the hair was just going nuts.

Maybe it's because I have VSYNC off and it effects the physics, but the hair was going insane.

do you feel like the hair's behavior causes dissonance with the narrative? all that dirt and mud, plus, would hair really be so flamboyant on an island where everything wants to give Lara a haircut and a half?

Yeah, and people find it easier to accuse him of hating everything rather than discussing what he's saying. Seems silly. I'd much rather people focus on what Derrick says rather than his negativity.

That's pretty hard when he blantantly has a dislike for almost every big release and some of the titles he does praise (Spec Ops The Line) he does sorely for the story telling and theme and not the actually gameplay. So while it's nice to see what debbie downer has to say in a "looking at it through the worst eyes" scenario. It still gets on some peoples nerves.

Spec Ops had pretty solid TPS gameplay, above average even due to the increased difficulty over most shooters and the fact that enemies actually use some basic form of tactics.

It's everyone else who strangely bashes the gameplay for being absolute shit. I'm not sure what TPS those people play in that case.

Not that I'd like the focus of this to be on him, but he say's he hates most games or finds reasons as to why they displease them. There's nothing wrong with that. If you want to focus on what he says, well, that's what he says. So it's not a big deal that someone said he hates most games.

back ot:

Does anyone know what the optional Steam download for the movies are? Is it just the trailers that were released over the last few years or is it something applied in-game. Does the game use any pre-rendered scenes at all?

The combat scenario design in Spec Ops is "absolute shit" and this becomes abundantly clear on the harder difficulties. It's clown car design at it's worst.

Then ignore him? Not that hard. If what he says doesn't hold value for you, why get annoyed?

That looks great. Does 45 fps feel pretty good or is it pretty noticeable not having that 60 fps?

Its mostly 55ish, with really rare drops to 40s. It only drops below 50 when there's "close up" scenes with Lara hair and that's it. In regular gameplay its 55+ almost every time.

My PC:

8gb of RAM

My only complaint is about facial animations :/ they sux.

So I'm trying to follow these steps, but when I try to go in offline mode with the game running, it says it can't restart Steam in offline mode until I close Tomb Raider.

I am getting an error that shuts down the game at the same spot every time. After you arrive on the island and pick up the backpack with the matches and walkie talkie. Anyone else experiencing this?

If you've launched the game once, you can exit out of it and put steam in offline mode. Launch the game again and it'll be fine.

Don't worry, if you fall in you just end up landing near a volcano in the desert of Eddy County, New Mexico.

I enjoy your posts, don't get me wrong. I just trying to explain as an example. I thought Spec Ops was average at best gameplay and scenario wise, but the story did push it way above some other games in this case. Though I'm not sure some would agree.

I'm eager to see your actually posts on Tomb Raider once you play it.

I feel so stupid asking and I'm guessing I must have missed a tutorial. But in the very beginning in the cave when you have to click left right left right before the boulder crushes you (the guy is grabbing your leg) I have no idea what they are asking me to do. I don't have a controller so I'm using my keyboard. I'm doing left right etc then this circle appears and I don't know what they are asking me to push.

Edit: never mind looking at the options the symbol is action which is F key.

It's really weird to see a port made by Nixxes having issues everywhere like that.

Nixxes usually always do pure magic with their ports,SE should've give them more time.

Someone else mentioned they VPN'ed to Japan and was able to launch it. I can't verify myself, but you can give that a try on Incloak.

I did get my GMG code and pre-loaded already (even though it's available now on steam in my region, it's still marked as pre-loaded).

I redeemed the AMD code on Saturday for a friend. Hope it doesn't take too long since I only redeemed it then.

So general consensus.. the reviews are right, and this is indeed a really good game?

Gonna have to pick this up, especially as some of you are making favourable comparisons with Uncharted, I love that series.

Is there some "Wow, you're really THAT dense?" explanation for VPN stuff? I dun wanna break stuff :(

It's easy to dismiss people that hate games without ever having experienced them first hand. Don't want to be dismissed so easily, then don't act like that. The reverse is true as well. People that tell you something is unquestionably awesome without ever having played it are hard to take seriously too.
