This is the future of video games folks.
Always-Online DRM.
Ironic, then, that it appears to be never-online!
And no; it's not the future. It's the future of highly-marketed hyped-up projects, you betcha. But For awhile every game out there was an MMOG too; remember those days? "The future of gaming". It's the future until people get sick of the drawbacks and reset to another, previous format.
There will always be lots of games out there that don't have this kind of "Screw you, consumer!" DRM. Nothing that amoral companies like EA or Activision do can stop that.
So no, it's not the future of gaming. It's just what EA will continue doing with the games it...continues to produce.
And I predict that the limitations of such invasive DRM will, over time, hurt them big time. People who have more desirable alternatives will rule the market, piracy or no piracy.
Who was responsible for testing the code during internal testing and the public betas to ensure a relatively smooth launch? I'm sure EA is culpable as well but don't act like Maxis isn't just as guilty. If the developers had properly stress tested the game they would have been at least marginally better prepared for the strain of launch. This turd lies at the feet of both parties and it's our responsibility to hold both accountable.
Lets not pretend that Maxis is still the Maxis we remember and love from the old days. It is nothing more than the label EA slaps on its sim-whatever titles now.
