Drag-on Dragoon 3 (Drakengard 3) announced for PS3 [Details in OP]

Taro is his first name, BTW. Family name is Yokoo (or Yoko, if you prefer). Seems funny for everyone saying "Taro is doing this" and "Taro said that" -- it's like talking about Nintendo and saying "Shigeru is doing this" and "Satoru said that" :)

I think it's a western thing to go with either name randomly.

I mean sometimes people refer to others by their first name, and other times by their last. Seems to be whatever is comfortable for the speaker or is most commonly used/mentioned.

Its also worth noting that when Famitsu has a legit big announcement coming they dont even hype it like they do for considerably smaller (as in not as unexpected as this is) games. lol

People call Reggie by his first name all the time. :p

My thoughts exactly. Won't get hyped for their scoop anymore.

This was up there with a new Killer Instinct on my list of games I don't ever expect to see.

Personally, I'm disappointed they didn't release a trailer for the announcement of a trailer for the announcement of the announcement.

I found myself reading a Drag-on Dragoon Let's Play recently and I wanted to play Nier again too, and I was all like, "Why am I doing this now?"

But holy shit.

Hoooollllyyy sssshhhiiiittt.

So hype for this. Can't fucking wait. Hope they get 8-4 to do the localization again.

So, you're doing this, right?
Blink once for yes.

HOLY SHIT!

I never would have expected this. I couldn't be more excited!
Wish the guys from the D1 soundtrack were doing this one, but the Nier people are about as good as it gets otherwise

I know this is probably a random bullshit though, but I kind of wonder if they decided to go with a female MC to avoid anything like the father/brother Nier thing again.

This is amazing. I didn't think I'd see a potential Nier-caliber game again this generation.

Give me some 8-4 and some Laura Bailey and call it done.

I wasn't aware there was so much love for this series. Not that reviews are an accurate measure of a game, but I remember reading a few at the times the first two came out and I figured they weren't really worth playing. Are people expecting great things out of this 3rd game?

Nier was one of the most underrated games this gen imo and one of the good examples why you shouldn't put all your trust on reviews/metacritic/gamerankings.

I have not played the first two and see myself as someone who prioritised game mechanics in video games. What I like about NieR is its attempt to deconstruct action-rpg and narrates a nihilistic story using the medium only video games can ( NG+ ). That's why Yoko Taro being a part of this project piqued my interest.

The appeal of these games have never been about the proper gameplay, as much as the world, characters and story they set up. Drakengard 1 was tedious with sub-par graphics and dull areas, but the story it was telling made it more than enough for me to grind through it. Drakengard 2 was good in its own right, I'd say.
Nier on the other hand is next level shit. Needless to say, I can't wait to see what these guys bring up next!

They are, but good gameplay is the absolute last thing on the list if it's on the list at all.

I had more energy and tolerance in me when I was younger so I beat Drakengard 1+2 with everything unlocked. Weapons, weapons maxed, endings...all sorts of shit with no cheevos or any of that OSD headache.

Nier though....oh boy, I dunno if it's age or the ugly brown look of it but I couldn't stand one minute of that shit.

tl;dr gaming is a bitch so is nostalgia.

Well, I'm kind of excited. I found Drakengard 1 and 2 interesting but boring gameplay-wise, whereas I loved Nier. I hope Drakengard 3 will be more of Nier than its predecessors :)

The original team is back, so at the very least, the story and characters will be great. And that's really what made me fall in love with Drakengard 1. (And to a lesser extent, 2... still haven't gotten to play Nier yet, but I'll be playing it on PS3 soon enough.)

Like I said above, this would be even more perfect for me if Nobuyoshi Sano and Takayuki Aihara made a return for the soundtrack. But I am not going to turn my nose up at the Nier composers, who turned out one of the best soundtracks in memory, recent or otherwise.

I know this is probably a random bullshit though, but I kind of wonder if they decided to go with a female MC to avoid anything like the father/brother Nier thing again.

Eh, I doubt it. The main characters of the Drakengard games have been male up until now, so I guess they're just trying something new for the series.

ULTROS!

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.
I wish this means that there's a glimmer of hope for Valkyrie Profile 3: Hrist.

I liked Drakengard, especially the 2nd one. I thought it was kind of repetitive so I hope this isn't like Dynasty Warriors with dragons.

Man, if they just did that and did it right this time (D1 especially is pretty janky, gameplay-wise), I'll be happy.

Oh hell. I'll be happy anyway, as long as Taro makes sure the story and characters are more like D1 than D2.

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
Can someone please link to a web source that details the connection of Drakengard to Nier ?

Drakengard 2 intro is very memorable to me "Love me. I want you to love me."
Nier also has very cool intro quote from Kaine.

This is unexpected, I'm very happy.

I really enjoyed the two first games and NieR is a wonderful game. I remember the soundtrack. Really great.

So, John... That guy who work on Nier with you fine folks, is he still available for localization work if a fitting project was to rear its head?

Wow. While not NieR 2, at least NieR team working on this has me interested. I guess it's time to play the First two Drakengards then?

Despite being one of my favorite PS2 games ever, Drakengard 1 is hard to recommend to just anybody. Like I said above, the combat is kind of wonky, there are some baffling design decisions that make the game harder to play than it should be (bad camera control for starters), the engine's limitations mean an absurdly poor draw distance... overall, the gameplay experience is just barely adequate.

But if you can put up with all that (or look past it), you'll play something entirely unique, disturbing, bizarre, and adult in ways games never attempt to be. Taro decided to explore human taboos with the game, and it's hard to come up with one that isn't present in some form. The soundtrack is excellent but extremely experimental. It's often cacophonous and sometimes not even musically interesting. It's perfect for the game, but it's divisive.

Drakengard 2 is better in almost every way... except for the story, the characters, and the soundtrack (which is good but more traditional). So mechanically it's a better game than 1, but it's less interesting. It's a fine game, but I wouldn't play it unless you've played 1, honestly.

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
Scans are available. Graphics seems good, but it's not so clear from scans. The art is very good, though.

It's Access Games. It won't look good.

The art direction could be great (seems off to a fine start) and it doesn't have to be ugly, but it won't look good.

Thank you for the run down. I'm really intrigued now. With what you described, I absolutely adored NieR, and Deadly Premonition another game on that different spectrum. I'll have to listen to some music from Drakengard 1 and 2, as NieR is up there with Chrono Trigger/Cross as my favorite video game soundtracks.

Never played the previous two games, but after Nier I'll definitely give this a shot. Hopefully they also bring back Emi Evans for the soundtrack, considering just how well the Nier OST sold for Square Enix I'd be surprised if they didn't.

A bit late to the discussion, but...

Some people mainly applaud its story, but my one playthrough gave me a really bad impression of it and as I said playing through it again would be like torture, so can't bring myself to do it. That said I fully expect it to be bad in its conclusion same as 99.9% of all games ;)
Congrats, you missed what makes of Nier a reaaaally interesting game.
It's not so much the story that is great, but the way it delivers it to the player. You HAVE to play through the game at least two times in order to be able to understand it / be able to talk about it. It's hard not to spoil the "twist", but basically you're missing on a good chunk of points of views with only one playthrough.
The way it treats how to tell a story is really, really quite brillant.

What the fuck?! How can good things still happen at this point of this console cycle?! Miracles do come true :D!!

Loved both Drakengard games and loved, loved Nier. I am honestly physched that they have brought all the core team back under one roof and get to continue again. I hope after this they can finish off Niers story
I don't like the idea of everyone becoming extinct now the gesalts are gone :(
and have a happy ending!

As much as I love Nier, and I do, I completely disagree you need to replay the game. The second ending is just a reiteration of the first ending, but really on the nose. I think it's perfect unto itself the first time through.

It's not the ending, it's the events leading to it that totally change your perspective on things.
