Spring Anime 2013 |OT -7| My Giant CG Pony Can't Possibly Read This Much Baudelaire

So last night me and a couple of friends watched Blood-C and the Eden of the East movies (we marathoned the shows together a few months ago). All of them were pretty bad, the EoE movies made Blood-C The Last Dark seem pretty great in comparison.

I made them watch Little Witch Academia though and they loved it.
Eden of the East suffers from Guilty Crown level writing, and that doesn't just apply to the movies. I watched and was dumbfounded at how it is so highly spoken of.

Wanna hear a good joke? Waste your time helping me! LOL!
Gargantia - Episode 1-2

...he finds himself on an unknown planet which he later learns is Earth - the birthplace of humanity, long forgotten by his people.

Even though it's probably Urobuchi's most light hearted and down to Earth story so far...
You did that on purpose.

There is no other explanation!

It's... okay. Would work better in a more episodic format since it's really just a "Breather" scene or two and misses Kaoru's point of view so he just comes off as really creepy (well more than usual).
Googling led me to both the weird concept of the manga and the fact that there are two live action films based on it.

Minus the :Chet though, but it's a worthy trade. Also has sweet music.

To be fair, I don't know anything about No 6 other than the ANN review that said it was amazing science fiction or whatever and the fact that the two guys make out with each other after being on the run from the government. Seems like a similar set up here anyway.

They were simply the best of friends. No 6 is worth watching one of the best anime in its year.

I think fanservice haremshit has passed me by. I no longer care much about it other than instances of cute. I think I am broken.

I think I'm gonna go watch some hentai instead. At least that doesn't skirt around the issue and lets me masturbate without any second thoughts.

How is taking a picture creepy?

I think it's the context that makes it weird for me, like everything to do with Photo Kano. I know you've asked before why so many people find the idea of the show creepy and I've wanted to try and explain from my perspective for a few days, so here goes - warning this post is going to be TL;DR

First off, with the GIF in particular, the girl in the picture is frozen in place, waiting for the snap to happen - she's basically "on hold" for the audience, no longer a character but a prop. As is often the case with CG anime, she also looks a bit weird and fake - she looks like "there's nothing going on behind the eyes", soulless and a bit dead.

The main issue for me, though, is the whole concept of Photo Kano.

Most people like taking photos, obviously. We capture memories of people and places we find interesting. Sometimes it's a bit artificial, but photography gives us memories of things we're close to emotionally.

Of course, people take sexy or private photos of their partners all the time. Sometimes that even happens in films. Where Photo Kano's premise differs is in what the context of that photography implies.

When you have someone taking a photograph in a film or a TV show, it's either revealing something about the photographer themself or their subject. That's what's interesting about it - whether it's something sexual or otherwise. It's part of the "journey" towards understanding a character or a scene. In Photo Kano, it's not the journey - it's the goal. The main character joins a club with a focus on erotic photography so he can take sexy photos of girls. That's it - that's the reason the show exists, for stills of upskirt and cleavage shots of a bunch of different girls.

Of course there are huge numbers of anime that are thinly veiled excuses for fanservice, that's nothing new. But the other issue about photography is the "distance" it puts between the photographer and the thing being photographed. People talk about "the subject" of a photograph - it turns people into abstract objects, not even people at all. The replication of the camera viewfinder effect in the show adds yet another layer of abstraction on to what's happening, as the viewpoint goes:

audience -> TV screen -> viewfinder -> girl

Look, I realise I'm overthinking this, and very few other people are going to feel as creeped out by Photo Kano as I am. If the girls' personalities are appealing and the fanservice shots are sexy then I'm sure there are loads of people who will enjoy it. But I just wanted to try and explain what exactly it was that makes this show a bit more uncomfortable than most other bishoujo adaptations.

LOL no. Sacred Seven had good animation, but it's a pretty unwatchable show. There's practically nothing good about it at all outside of the action, and after the first half of the show the amount of action nosedived. I'll rather marathon Heroman and E7AO together than watch through all 13 episodes of Sacred Seven. Same goes with Accel World really. The only way I can watch those shows is by skipping every single second which isn't action. Sunrise? More like Shitrise.

I absolutely despised Sacred Seven. That said, did I enjoy it more than AO? I suppose it goes back to what piles of shit I prefer.

Man ducky remembering me that Heroman exist still make me giggle without reason, that thing completely blank out from my memories. I even watch Giant Robo lately and its don't remind me even a bit to it before that ducky's quote.

Oh BONES...

Girls und Panzer END

A really wonderful show that I'll definitely revisit someday. The final episode was simply amazing. Hopefully we get another season of this because they can do a lot more with the concept. This will most definitely be in my top 10 (probably 5) for the AOTY 2013 voting.

The kind of parallel idea that some young person or someone just getting into the business and seeing the Little Witch Academia short and being inspired just like Akko was by Shiny Chariot is a good point. Maybe we'll meet that real life Akko some years in the future and see what they produce.
Yeah, and those that worked on the project certainly can learn from one of the best animators in the industry, such opportunity could be considered enviable by many other nascent colleagues!

A nice write up. Sasuga /XX/, haha.
I appreciate your words Nafe... although Ultimadrago is the responsible one for making me do it! :)

And so the quest for the perfect football anime continues. One with the realism of Giant Killing, the drama of Captain Tsubasa, and the animation of Ginga e Kickoff!!. Will the animation gods ever hear my pleas?
Well, I think I can't point you to a series with all that in proper doses (specially for the 'realism' part), but I still want to say works like Ashita e FREEKICK crave to a little more than only 'shōnen' sports series' audiences on its formula; it has he 'drama' part (however, it focuses on much more than football), not too much fantasy and some very nice animation on it.

Just so you know, my memory is fuzzy as I haven't seen it in a long time so maybe this isn't a good recommendation at all!

Also, I have said this before and not many share this opinion... but Captain Tsubasa J still has some of the best timing and effects in animation from all the sports Japanese animation works I remember having watched! Some scenes are just spectacular...
