I don't really care that I won't know what the director of some random agency makes. And, once again, Congress does something, yet Obama takes all your blame. Should he veto the whole thing?

The people who hold Walmart in such high esteem should read this: http://www.fastcompany.com/47593/wal-mart-you-dont-know

by itself, it wouldn't be too big of a deal, but it's another example in a long trend off Obama quietly dismantling or defanging(think: dodd-frank) any remotely progressive policy he manages to get through. I don't get how anyone can still cling to the idea that the guy is a secret liberal/progressive/socialist.

Maybe I'm overreacting, but it was disappointing to read about Obama going back on his word when the public wasn't looking(again).

You have FAILED in every "government service" you have shoved down our
throats while overspending our tax dollars.

lol, I read this line in the Arrow voice

I don't know why anyone thought that to begin with. It's like believing he was some secret atheist.

Obama said:
"The truth of the matter is that my policies are so mainstream that if I had set the same policies that I had back in the 1980s, I would be considered a moderate Republican."

He is not a liberal, he is not a dove, he is not (and never was) going to fulfill our most progressive dreams. I think he's a good president, hampered by a horrible congress. If Democrats held the House, we'd see a lot more progressive policies enacted, but the man really does want to work with Republicans.

This bill passed unanimously in both houses of Congress. It was veto-proof. Obama had no choice.

This. You are blaming Obama for Congress' work.

Something passing with a veto-proof majority just makes a veto pointless, right? My understanding was that regardless of the margin of passage, it could be vetoed and voted on again and if that second vote got a super majority, then it became law.

Right, he could've vetoed it, there was just no point to it. If the first vote gets a super majority, a bill will almost never be vetoed, as it just wastes time.

Does anyone here think the Dems have a shot at taking back the House?

I'm afraid they won't be able to hold on to the Senate...

In 2014? Hell no. The earliest I could see Dems taking back the House is 2016, and that's only really if a Democrat wins the White House in a landslide. I'm not too worried about the senate right now. They might lose a couple seats, but I think they'll keep a majority.

Democrats have a very good chance of picking up South Carolina's 1st district. Mark Sanford dun goofed, and lost national GOP support. Colbert's sister has a shot at it.

It's called being pragmatic, although that is probably a foreign concept to many people in PoliGAF who want him to support universal healthcare, end all wars, end the drug war, and other progressive fantasies. I'd like some of those things too! But it's not going to happen right now. It didn't happen when the Democrats had the House and a strong majority in the Senate. And it sure as hell isn't going to happen with a Republican House and a weakened Democratic Senate (that will probably get slightly weaker in 2014).

Obama was a community organizer in Chicago - are you really trying to say that he's not a liberal? You can see how passionate he is about gun control and I'm pretty sure that didn't start with Sandy Hook. Look at the questionnaire that he filled out prior to his first state senate campaign. And that was in 1996. I somehow doubt his views have changed since then. He's a progressive - the current political environment simply does not allow him to govern as one.

How the fuck can Americans be so disapproving of Congress but allow these GOP idiots to retain a majority in anything? Are they gonna blame Democratic messaging? Do they not see what the fuck is going on in regards to everything from the debt to gun control? THEY DO NOT CARE.

If people pin this on Obama they are FOOLS.

Gerrymandering.

Also, Reid is a fool.

Bad economy, people losing their jobs due to asshole employers (but blaming it on Obamacare), social security, gun control scares in purple districts, gerrymandering...dems have no shot. I could see them losing more seats than they win, given how ugly 2014 will be as Obamacare takes effect.

This. You are blaming Obama for Congress' work.

Why do so many people do this? Is it because it's easier to blame one person, than a body of people?

We know why PD does it
trolling reasons
, but others I don't understand.

People look at the president and think he's in charge, so he should be able to do something about it. Even if you know any better, which we all should, it's a hard thing to shake.

Yeah but even then, it's Republican enough that the GOP should win it back in 2014 and Democrats would still need to pick up 16 more seats. For reference, if every Democrat were given every contest decided by less than 5 points, they'd still be 5 seats short.

It's going to be very tough. My hope is that OFA is as good at mobilizing voters for midterms as they were for the presidential election. In addition to picking up more House seats it'd be good to knock off McConnell and send a message to Republicans.

The fact that the DCCC is willing to compete in a R+11 district gives me some hope that they'll wage an aggressive campaign next year.

If you can get to the end without bursting into laughter, you're a better man than I.

I barely made it a fourth of the way.

That is just crazy stupid. Wal*Mart is wealthy because they are subsidized by the government helping provide their workers with healthcare and foodstamps.

Wal*Mart is one massive welfare queen and people need to realize that. They could not exist as is without the massive subsidies they get from government and other businesses. Other businesses should call them out for it. Why should Intel, Google, Apple, Exxon, Eli Lilly, etc. have to pay higher taxes in order to subsidize Wal*Mart?

A woman wrote in to my paper this week complaining about Obama's chained CPI SS reduction, then said that she'll remember which party tried to decrease her benefits in 2014.

So...I pointed out on Facebook that 91 percent of Americans support background checks and guy replies

"They only surveyed a few thousand people!! That's a drop in the bucket to the entire population of the country!"

Cue using Rasmussen to prove Obummer is unpopular, who just skips the middleman and makes up their own results.

Why are you surprised after all the idiots who thought Silver saying Obama had a 90% chance of winning Pennsylvania meant he would win with 90% of the vote?

I thought McCain was pretty honest about the political nature of this. He said passing immigration reform won't win republicans a single vote, but what it could do is level the playing field among Latino voters; this issue causes most Latinos to outright dismiss the republican party, and if they can pass a good reform bill perhaps Latinos will be more keen to listen to their ideas on other issues.

Honestly I don't think that's a bad idea, it's certainly better than the semi-racist "they'll vote for us and Rubio if we give them things" reasoning some on the right use. IMO the issue is losing the Hispanic vote 70-30/80-20 or losing it 65-35/60-40. If republicans can prove they all aren't out of touch sure, I'd imagine Hispanics might give them a shot. But ultimately that demographic's political views currently match democrats.

Why was he even talking about politics?

Sen. Max Baucus (D-Mont.) said Wednesday he fears a "train wreck" as the Obama administration implements its signature healthcare law.

Baucus, the chairman of the chamber's powerful Finance Committee and a key architect of the healthcare reform law, said he fears people do not understand how the law will work.
"I just see a huge train wreck coming down," he told Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius at a Wednesday hearing. "You and I have discussed this many times, and I don't see any results yet."

Baucus pressed Sebelius for details about how the Health Department will explain the law and raise awareness of its provisions, which are supposed to take effect in just a matter of months.

"I'm very concerned that not enough is being done so far — very concerned," Baucus said.

Watching the immigration bill reveal live and Lindsy Graham is making quite an impressive argument for reform.
But is it more than lip service? What's ideal for Republicans at this point is to be able to take credit for reform but not the blame for actually reforming anything.
