Xbox One: Details on Connectivity, Licensing (24 hour check-in) and Privacy Features

Honestly, sounds pretty good and some features are an improvement, like accessing your entire library logging into a friend or any "family members" playing your games. I wonder how they'll limit it to family members.

This is actually way worse than I was expecting, I'm not sure how this clarification was a good thing.

24 hour online check was confirmed, publishers can kill off used games as they like (and only available through specific retailers), can only share your games with your friends only once give the game to your friend and never get it back. This is totally fucked up.

Wow this isn't too bad at all really? Right? Am I right

It's still bad, you can't resell to anyone you want. This kills us selling on ebay if we want to and will kill mom and pop shops. You also can only lend out games once. Still bad, still very bad.

•Trade-in and resell your disc-based games: Today, some gamers choose to sell their old disc-based games back for cash and credit. We designed Xbox One so game publishers can enable you to trade in your games at participating retailers. Microsoft does not charge a platform fee to retailers, publishers, or consumers for enabling transfer of these games.

WTF!

So if you want to sell your games without having to deal with a middleman you'll have to add the buyer to your friends list for at least a month. That's really inconvenient.

LMAO!

"M$ doesn't take a fee for this"

No! You just restrict it to certain locations/circumstances so you can take a cut of their sales.

It's Steam with harsher online requirements and potential trade ins.

While you can "maybe" trade in your games, it's 100% impossible to privately sell them to someone though.

This is quite a bit better than it could have been, but at the same time it really depends on what publishers choose to do.

•Share access to your games with everyone inside your home: Your friends and family, your guests and acquaintances get unlimited access to all of your games. Anyone can play your games on your console--regardless of whether you are logged in or their relationship to you.

holy shit, anyone can play games on my console... i was worried for a while there.

Give your games to friends: Xbox One is designed so game publishers can enable you to give your disc-based games to your friends. There are no fees charged as part of these transfers. There are two requirements: you can only give them to people who have been on your friends list for at least 30 days and each game can only be given once.

Transfer? Is that a poor choice of words or do I not get my game back once they are done with it?

No fees to transfer licenses is great, only one transfer per game is unfortunate but workable.

Wait, if I transfer a game to my friend Bob, can Bob then transfer it to his friend Sally?

What do you mean this isn't bad? It pretty much confirmed what we expected.

1. Xbone requires a internet connection. If you don't check in within 24 hours, your system is essentially locked.

2. You can not borrow or rent games.

3. You CAN trade your games to friends but they must be on your friends list and once you trade it, it gets tied to their account. You can only trade the game ONE time.

4. Publishers will have the ability to block you from selling/trading the game.

Just because they worded it differently doesn't make it better.

In our role as a game publisher, Microsoft Studios will enable you to give your games to friends or trade in your Xbox One games at participating retailers. Third party publishers may opt in or out of supporting game resale and may set up business terms or transfer fees with retailers.

Really does not sound awful?

That shared game bullet point seems kind of crazy. If my understanding is correct, i can basically buy Halo 5 or Shenmue 3(lulz), and share the games up to 10 people on my friendlist? So they won't have to buy the game at all right? And i could access their games and vice versa?

Edit: Ah, its limited to family members... Actually, after re-reading it, it's still pretty bad, but not as bad as i thought it would be.

They actually put this up literally moments after the Washington Post breaks the story that NSA is data-mining MS servers -- "extracting audio, video, photographs, e-mails, documents and connection logs that enable analysts to track a person’s movements and contacts over time."

"You have total control over your Kinect privacy. Also, Bob from NSA says hi."

This thread is gonna reach 300 pages.

Anybody else laugh at the "you can still watch tv".

THANKS microsoft!, I appreciate it! It's not like we use our cable provider for TV or anything

"GIVE" It doesn't say loan or borrow. Now, if I am to take that as it is, that would mean I can give a friend one of my games, who has been on my friends list for more than 30 days, but I don't get it back when they are done? It says "give" not "loan" or "borrow" Sounds like some sort of licence trading between buddies.

It also says it can only be done once. I need more clarity on this.

Well, uh, this actually sounds pretty good, for the most part.

But I do have three points I think are worth mentioning:

each game can only be given once.

What. Like... once to a PERSON, or once, period?

With Xbox One you can game offline for up to 24 hours on your primary console

I have a huge problem with this.

We designed Xbox One so game publishers can enable you to trade in your games at participating retailers.

THIS

IS UNACCEPTABLE

Flat-out, 100%, unacceptable.

If I buy a game, I expect to be able to resell it at will. If I want to resell it on ebay or Amazon, I should be able to do that, and make, y'know, $20-30 off a game I sell, rather than the $5 or whatever that Amazon or Gamestop would offer. Also, this seems to screw over smaller retail chains I buy used games from that aren't gamestop.

MS: Don't get mad at us, publishers decide whether there is a fee(or trade in) or not, we just put the system in place.

No loans. You fully lend a game to a friend, it's considered "giving" it and you can't get it back without buying a new copy.

Wow.

I may be ignorant or uninformed, but what's saying Sony won't take the same (or similar) approach?

Either way, this...sucks.

Well no used games fees, which is a plus :)

The rest is bad IMO - especially for you guys touting GameStop as the bringer of all evils, as they will probably have even more power now private sales are stopped.

Also this...

"Loaning or renting games won’t be available at launch, but we are exploring the possibilities with our partners."

:(

Skel1ingt0n

I can't *believe* these lazy developers keep making file sizes so damn large. Btw, how does technology work?
This is fucking awful; but it's better than what we thought.

Which shows you how fucking awful we thought it was going to be.

Tucah

you speak so well
Transfer? Is that a poor choice of words or do I not get my game back once they are done with it?

Yes, that's for actually giving a game to a friend: "Loaning or renting games won’t be available at launch, but we are exploring the possibilities with our partners."

All of this is just ridiculous to have anyone have to think about and try to parse and understand when announcing a fun new video game console. It's utterly ridiculous.

What the fuck? If they are so hellbent on killing a non online console why even have discs

Games are pretty big, so it's realistic to expect disc use. My thing is, in my personal usage, I don't care for having to be tethered to having a disc in the drive after install. That's a huge plus for Steam-like access to games owned. I'm sure many will disagree for their own reasons.

So people on your friends list for 30 days can be given a game, and up to 10 people regardless of the XB1 they're using can always access your shared games for no extra fee. That seems great and weird.
