I was playing Gears with Lunchbox last night. He's convinced I will buy a Xbone when the new Gears is inevitably announced.

Yeah....nah son. Ain't happening. Not in this fucking universe. Never.

this is not a defense of microsoft but rather a criticism of a ridiculous argument

if your internet is regularly out for 24+ hour increments, then you have far larger problems than not being able to play your xbox in this hyper-connected day and age

a broadband connection is practically mandatory in the 21st century.

So if I go to a friend's house I need to wait several hours to download a 5-15 GB game instead of just bringing my game with me? Is this correct?

No. Take the game with you and sign into his Xbox One and your good to go.

What happens in 6-8 years later when the Xbox One's servers (activation servers and DRM servers) aren't online anymore? I can still play all my 10 or 20 year old games fine. Will all of my games I (potentially) buy for Xbox One just stop working? Am I going to be able to even buy more Xbox One games beyond that point due to the dumb used game restrictions and lack of activation servers?

This is a major issue that isn't even being addressed.

Microsoft isn't even sure what they're gonna be doing 5 months from now let alone 5 years from now.

Microsoft said:
Give your family access to your entire games library anytime, anywhere: Xbox One will enable new forms of access for families. Up to ten members of your family can log in and play from your shared games library on any Xbox One. Just like today, a family member can play your copy of Forza Motorsport at a friend’s house. Only now, they will see not just Forza, but all of your shared games. You can always play your games, and any one of your family members can be playing from your shared library at a given time.

This is the most interesting part. IF you can add your friends to your family, this has a lot of potential to be awesome. If I understand it right, I can buy Call of Duty Ghosts, and my 'family member' (aka friend) can play it on his xbox one at his house as long as he is registered as my family member. Speculation?

Will everyone who is sure sony will have a similar online requirement AND used game restrictions be willing to stake their accounts on it?

Billing address on credit card tied to the account. Super simple way to do it.

Don't have the same billing address? Don't have a credit card attached? You're SOL.

You have to look for the most locked down answer and you'll find the truth.

That assumes Xbox Live Gold is a requirement. What if they don't get Xbox Live Gold?

I guess it's nice to have the matter settled so I know not to pay any more attention to anything on this console.

It is late afternoon and deep in a dense forest a father and son are out hunting deer. The pair have been out for a couple of hours now but have been unlucky thus far until they hear an almighty bang from the distance. It came from way beyond the forest and even beyond their hometown. The teary eyed boy looks shocked by the loudness of the sound and clings to his father looking up at him.
"What was that awful noise father?", the boy asks trembling. "It sounded so close but that's not possible.".
"It came from far off son.", his father explained.
"What was is it though?".
"Microsoft finally shot themselves in the foot and made sure everyone heard about it".

Haha. Great.

I'm done with MS

They are doing exactly what I predicted they would do when they entered the game. I actually kind of hoped this wouldn't be true. Now I'm done. Not being a Anti Consumer Always online console. This is BULLSHIT and people supporting this should be ashamed

I love how the people who kept damage controlling during the Orth incident and May 21st are right here continuing to spin even after everything is confirmed to be as bad as it seemed.

You are either horribly deluded fanboys or you people really are corporate shills. Like a malignant tumor on this board.

Who are these people? I'd like to know please

People, read the terms more carefully.

They are saying that a game can only be given away ONCE. If anybody gives you a game, you won't be able to do the same.

How can anyone agree to this, especially the 24 hour ping?

am i the only one who think this really isnt that bad, i thought we would have to share to same profile if you are in a family or have two seperate account to play the same game.

I'm not trying to be a dick, it's just hard to take the "it's not that bad" stuff seriously when it comes from people who still have "ONLY ON XBOX" avatars at this point. Just because it's not as bad as it could have been (I guess) doesn't mean it isn't bad.

Wow, you have to be shitting me... connecting online once every single day or they won't let you play offline games without reconnecting?

What if the Internet is down?

Just to be specific, combining what we have on that page regarding the family thing:

1. You can indicate up to 10 accounts to be family members and thus access your library on your Xbone and any other Xbone.

2. If you or said family member access the account on a Xbone that is not your main one, it will check every 1 hour if you are online or not instead of 24 hours.

3. Family members can't play the same game at the same time when using multiple Xbones.

So, yes, you could share with a buddy, but he would have online checks every 1 hour on his console and you two can't play the same game at the same time.

Given the lengths they're going on other things, I highly doubt it'll be easy to add and remove accounts in order to share access with friends. Accounts will be attached to primary consoles or something, so that it's really only people who also live in your house who will have access to those games.

They already confirmed you don't need an internet connection and way more indie friendly. All I need to know.

This. If the no online (and therefore no online "check-in") remains true, and they've said it repeatedly so I think/hope it will, and since I do the majority of my gaming offline single-player, I'll be quite happy.

I want to play offline whenever I freaking want to! How the heck is this 24hr shit gonna work(can't I just reset the X1's clock)??? If it's gonna require for me to put the disc in then it's not a big deal. But if it prevents me from playing my games at all then... WTFU@*&^@#F!!!

This is still bad no matter how they word it. Whoever said Gaf is a hivemind was totally wrong.

hell, a week ago Gaf was a hivemind. everyone was against MS DRM policies, flash forward to today we get the same information and everyone's okay with this.......... what?

Are you reading the same thread as me? There are a lot of gaffers in here who are definitely not okay with this BS, although there are still a handful of people who don't seem to mind, which just fucking blows me away but each to their own.

What's blowing my mind is how you release a statement like this, then hide all your execs from journalists at E3? In what world does that make any sense?

You will be able to play them for 24 hours after the servers go down.

So...the games should be cheaper right? Either way, people are going to be really REALLY selective about the games they buy from now on.

One if the reasons next gen is scaring me.
Retro gamers are a small lot in a sense and hardly seen as a group of people to please. But yes I could see this being a problem down the line easily.

Because it isnt as bad as gaf was making it out to be. Sony is probably going to take a similar route regarding DRM and the Xbone can still share games. It could have been much much worse.

Can people just fucking stop saying this, it is as if you people want Sony to do the same so you can feel better about having supported Microsoft's move. its sad that people are supporting this, even sadder is many using the "well Sony will probably follow the same route" as a basis for their support of these practices.

Why should it matter to you who supports it? Aren't people allowed to make their own decisions? This is largely the problem with some on here. There is such a lack of being comfortable in your own skin. It isn't enough for you to say fuck Microsoft and you're not buying a shitty Xbox One, because you don't like their policies or strategy. You also have to display animosity towards people who don't agree with you.

How childish is that?

People who are fine with this are explicitly condoning its implementation to the detriment of everyone else.

Do you not get that?

I'm with him.

Fuck having to report in daily and justify my entitlement to access my purchases, and fuck everyone who supports that.

To me this:

•Buy the way you want—disc or digital—on the same day: You’ll be able to buy disc-based games at traditional retailers or online through Xbox Live, on day of release. Discs will continue to be a great way to install your games quickly.

More than counteracts the used game issue. New games are going to be cheaper. Retail is going to have to find ways to get you to use brick and mortar, and Xbox can undercut them at will. Seems like this is going to put price pressure on new games in a significant way, which is going to eat into any price issues from used games.

The argument was always that the $20-$30 you're swinging by recycling your family new games is driving game sales. Well how about if the price of new games gets driven down $20 within two weeks of launch? Then you're spending the same amount AND you still have your games for future play.

Still not worried about this gen - any of this stuff - until I see it in action over a period of time. The market will decide, as it always does. I suspect MS and Sony both are going to end up having similar policies in the long run.

I'm the opposite, I'm always connected, but I do sell and trade games, and buy used quite often.

I have awful internet due to a monopoly and like to buy and sell games as I please. This is depressing, but it's just a hobby I can replace with something that won't treat me like shit.

One novelty factor?

Some stores here sell the games "opened", they put the disc and manual into the case when you take it up to the register. Not sure if this is allowed anywhere else. I tend to only buy online so my games are always sealed anyway. Anyway, it's going to be interesting to see how many of those "new" copies of games have been pre-used by store staff.

Guys, I would hold off crucifying Microsoft for a few days as I am sure Sony will have something very similar to announce. Sony's policy could be slightly less restrictive, but i do think the option for publishers to block will be present.

And I think we can all think of one publisher which will gladly block the ability to trade in games. You know, the one who recently pretended to be "mr nice guy" by cancelling all their online passes.
