Great news! Basically an improved Steam PLUS the option to trade in used games if the publisher isn't a dick! MS first party allows used games too? This is fantastic news. Not sure how much of this negativity is phony fanboyism?

Only without the awesome sales, which is the only reason why people accept the DRM.

Anyways, let's just hope Sony has a more lenient approach.

I dont see anything positive in all this, all our fears have came true. Read the way its written, trade ins could be a total no no if the pubs want. Do people really think pubs wont say fuck it no resale if they are given the option?. We are being fucked up the arse here and people are accepting it.

You know, up to 10 members of my family, can currently play any game I own, from any console in my house. /s
...and it's all free.

People seriously find that exciting?

-They provide no details on what a "Family Member" entails.

-Your "Family Members" will need a stable broadband connection to access the cloud games, how will that work? we don't know. Do they still need your discs to install the game to their hard drives? we don't know.

-They provided no details on if they will be required to have Xbox Live Gold as well as you.

-Only One Family member can access your library at A Give Time.

The only funny thing about this all is that they probably again thought that people would greet them with smiles and praise after they had said what they had wanted to say. Jesus Christ.

question for all the "Sony will be doing this, I'm sure of it" folk

If they aren't will you buy one?

Sony has already stated that their console will be an offline console. SO if they do this is going to take some other kind of method. Maybe the rfid chip, but it still wouldn't be as convoluted as this Microsoft monstrosity.

Wow, if Sony does this shit as well, Wii U might have the most amazing comeback in the history of gaming.

Pretty sure that's what the PS3 is doing right now. Granted they aren't threatening the Wii for first place, but releasing at year later at a higher price point and to come back and match xbox360 (or exceed) it in sales is a feat.

All hail the anti-consumer used-game cartel! See, Microsoft wasn't screwing Gamestop, they were making love! YOU can't sell your games to other users, but you're welcome to let Gamestop rip you off!

Holy shit, could any company more openly despite its customers?

*Sizzle reel*
*Tretton takes the stage*
"No DRM, you can sell your used PS4 games to whomever you want, whenever you want, for whatever price you want."
*Tretton drops mic and walks off*

Given the lengths they're going on other things, I highly doubt it'll be easy to add and remove accounts in order to share access with friends. Accounts will be attached to primary consoles or something, so that it's really only people who also live in your house who will have access to those games.

I imagined as much too, but the page specifically says these family members can play the games on any Xbone.

Can't wait til Sony reveals their policy. Gonna be so much backtracking here, its gonna make your head spin.

Which policy would that be? The no online required checks? Already done that. The DRM is up to the publishers like on the PS3? Already done that too.

No, your fantasy seems to be that Sony will do the exact same thing as Microsoft, only this time we'll all be okay with it because for some reason we're just fanboys and not really upset about all this 'consumer rights' or 'internet required' nonsense. Also, somehow, the PC is not the big giant flaming alternative to both companies shitting it up. So we'll all fall in line. Hooray.

Awesome. Its basically like steam for consoles, except with the ability to give away games from your library and the ability to sell your games back to the store. I'm okay with this.

People are complaining that they will go to PC if Xbox implements this. PC has an even worse drm policy than this. WTF! Makes no sense.

That's just as anti-consumer as what MS have implemented. Why should publishers be able to dictate when you can sell something? Especially with games, where they lose resale value the longer it is after release.

Physical games are no different from any other consumer item. First sale doctrine applies. Once I have bought something, it is mine to sell when, and to whomever, I want.

Nah, I can see where he's coming from. 2-3 months is waaaay too much though.

Can people just fucking stop saying this, it is as if you people want Sony to do the same so you can feel better about having supported Microsoft's move. its sad that people are supporting this, even sadder is many using the "well Sony will probably follow the same route" as a basis for their support of these practices.

dude it's the only hope they have left

I'm fine with everything that has been stated. It's going to be awesome having the ability to play my games from any console. The family plan seems really nice too.
You can already, today, play any game you want on any console. You just bring the disk.

This also works, today, with downloadable titles if you sign in.

Just an FYI.

HOLY SHIT!

Publishers get to choose whether a game can be resold.....wow. Just wow. I mean I was never interested in a drm console anyway, but this is just a slap in the face. A slap in the face with a great big dick.

Go fuck yourselves Microsoft. I hope this consoles flops badly.

newsflash, when Sony said it's up to publishers what do you think they meant?

So the drm system is slightly less horrible than you anticipated, which makes it okay?

It's probably just people that share the same wifi as you.

It's not as if they want them to do it, it's just a logical step to think Sony will follow suit. Calm down.

Eh, it's 'not as bad as I was expecting' in the same way that expecting to get raped by a wooden rod in the mud is not as bad as getting raped by a metal rod in a bed while your balls get tickled.

I'm not going to congratulate Microsoft for having the audacity to word this in a way to say they 'give' us more limited rights compared to what we have now.

Also, Rob Crossley had his head up his own arse.

This wording is concerning. Instead of having publishers able to enable your ability to NOT Trade it in, it is the other way around. This points to the war on used games still being around this gen. I'm not reading this as a shift. The only thing we know is MS wont be the one adding on the fee's(Assuming there isnt a back ended fee somewhere, similar to patch fee's).

Game publishers can enable used game selling.

Game publishers can enable game borrowing.

Worrying terminology and you know publishers are going to lock this down fast.

What happens in 6-8 years later when the Xbox One's servers (activation servers and DRM servers) aren't online anymore? I can still play all my 10 or 20 year old games fine. Will all of my games I (potentially) buy for Xbox One just stop working? Am I going to be able to even buy more Xbox One games beyond that point due to the dumb used game restrictions and lack of activation servers?

This is a major issue that isn't even being addressed.

Simple answer: no. They'll want you to upgrade to the new system.

I'm going to love the ability to install games to the harddrive, and play them without having to swap discs.

The 24 hour check in seems a little short, but I'm always connected to the internet and don't take my Xbox anywhere, so it won't bother me.

I'm not really understanding how they're going to differentiate trading in games at retailers thing and gifting your game to a friend though. How is Microsoft going to know how someone new acquired the preowned game?

I assumed the online check-in was to see if anyone else registered the game to their account and then revoke access to previous owners.

Well then. While I typically like to pick up every video game console. I think I might really have to pass on the new Xbox.

Thankfully everyone I play online with has mostly agreed that the PS4 is looking like the go to machine this time around. I hope this comes and bites Microsoft so hard in the ass.

Renting games is a massive deal to me, as I play a lot of games through Gamefly or Redbox as I simply cannot afford to buy every game I want to play through. And I'm not paying $60 to trade it back in for $30 after a week or two.

ok they will, there is no way MS will be this stupid if Sony wasn't this stupid as well

at least, that's the logic

I think MS could be this stupid. They wanted a wall garden for apps on windows RT, and think they own the US game market. They could think their offering this will endure them to publishers and get them more games, and finally, a slice of that used game pie.

Hey guys, remember adam orth? And how he lost his job when he was talking about a console having to connect to the internet?

this is not a defense of microsoft but rather a criticism of a ridiculous argument

if your internet is regularly out for 24+ hour increments, then you have far larger problems than not being able to play your xbox in this hyper-connected day and age

a broadband connection is practically mandatory in the 21st century.
Not everyone lives in a place where wired broadband internet is constant nor accessible. I used to live in a place with only dial up for 4 months, and I ended up surviving pretty easily after the first few weeks.

It's already been mentioned numerous times how this isn't really like Steam.

Guys, I would hold off crucifying Microsoft for a few days as I am sure Sony will have something very similar to announce. Sony's policy could be slightly less restrictive, but i do think the option for publishers to block will be present.

And I think we can all think of one publisher which will gladly block the ability to trade in games. You know, the one who recently pretended to be "mr nice guy" by cancelling all their online passes.

If Sony does it too, both of them get crucified. Microsoft is just getting a head start, and a deserved one.

None of this effects me personally but I can see how others are disappointed. I'm pretty used to playing games this way these days and I don't usually wait for new games to go on sale before I buy them. Honestly though we should be able to recognize that it is kind of nice to be able to play your games anywhere, even if that doesn't make up for the other changes to how people sell and share games.

"In our role as a game publisher, Microsoft Studios will enable you to give your games to friends or trade in your Xbox One games at participating retailers. Third party publishers may opt in or out of supporting game resale and may set up business terms or transfer fees with retailers. Microsoft does not receive any compensation as part of this. In addition, third party publishers can enable you to give games to friends. Loaning or renting games won’t be available at launch, but we are exploring the possibilities with our partners."

Conclusions:

* Third party publishers may opt out of supporting game resale.
* In addition, third party publishers can deny you the right to give games to friends.

To be fair, I applaud them for not doing the *most* heinous option themselves, but even so...

Sony do NOT F*** this up!
do NOT!

DO NOT!!!!

They will.

EA wouldn't have dropped online passes if they didn't know they'd be able to control used games as they saw fit on both the MS and Sony platforms.

Maybe they won't require 24 hour check ins, but I'd be shocked if the used game trade ins didn't have the same restrictions and be left up to the publishers.

Share access to your games with everyone inside your home: Your friends and family, your guests and acquaintances get unlimited access to all of your games. Anyone can play your games on your console--regardless of whether you are logged in or their relationship to you.

Will Nintendo ever catch up to such innovations? Probably not.
