LTTP: Final Fantasy IX

As far as being late to the party is concerned, playing this game for the first time in 2013 is like opening the tomb of a Pharaoh for the first time and finding a coffin built entirely of pure gold.

Wow, what a game. As you would expect for such an old game, I found the dated, jaggy character models and framerate hitches a little jarring at first, but then the games immense character and uniqueness just wash all that away completely. The opening sequence is enchanting and funny as hell. The environments still look gorgeous today, the CG cutscenes, when you factor in that this game was on the PSone are really impressive, the music and sound effects are amazing coming through the PS3 headset and the combat mechanics seem solid enough.

I'm about 4-5 hours in and it feels like I haven't even scratched the surface, but it's off to an awesome start. How I haven't played this before now is truly a mystery to me.

I loved everything about this game except for the frame rate and how goddamn long everything takes. Even when playing off a hard drive, the animations are still long and tedious.

But the world and characters are still among the genre's best.

I loved FFIX. I was a little put off that Square back-pedaled so quickly back to safe territory after going so deep into left field with VII and VIII, but I cannot deny IX's charms.

Welcome to the ride of your life.

Take your time, talk to every single npc, walk from time to time into a forest and be sure to keep your first weapons ;)

Don't forget to save. Often. I lost an hour's worth of progress at the beginning of Disc 3 a couple of weeks ago, which basically put an end to my hopes of replaying the whole game this year.

Great game and one of my favourites as my avatar shows.

Only problem i have with the game today is the Slowness you get in the battles.

The biggest flaw about FFIX was the really long load times coupled with frequent random encounters. Otherwise, one of the best games in the series. I especially loved the relationship between Vivi and Steiner.

Can you explain this part without spoiling anything? Are later weapons shit in general or are your starting weapons upgradeable later or....?

Nah, there's just a certain dungeon that reverses weapons attack power. i.e. strong weapons are crap while crap weapons are good.

Probably the best FF, can't quite decide between it and X, and one of the best JRPGs I've played... Assuming it's on an emulator at 1.5x speed.

Oh wow, okay. Thanks for the tipoff. I'll keep an eye out for that one.

I purchased the game off the PSN, so I am stuck with regular speed :(

Through the game you'll be able to craft powerful weapons and other equipment using the various synthesis shops around the world. You'll want to have lots of stuff in your inventory to craft these weapons because sometimes you'll need "weak" components to forge something more valuable.

This, and a certain quest near the end of the game.

Edit: dammit Keasby!!

just bought a Vita, and the first thing I did was buy FF9...

now replaying it, I just arrived to Lindblum.
Second Best FF ever, and my favorite PS1 game.

:D

With the right settings in epsxe you can make the game look pretty decent

Playing this game on the Vita is pure bliss, I can't wait to have all the good FF's in the palm of my hand when X/X2 arrive later this year.

(I'm not forgetting XII Square-Enix!)

This my second favorite FF game I love everything about it except two annoying things. The Trance system and the slow loading times when you enter and exit battles.

This thread is making me consider a Vita just to replay Disc 1 (and the rest, probably). What have you done.

165€ with a 8go memory card is a good deal, I suppose?

I hope you like it. I still think it's one of the most timeless games ever released, but I think I might be deeply blinded by nostalgia for it. Not too sure.

I wouldn't call it timeless simply based on how slow it is.

I recently bought a Vita simply for the FF games. One of the best gaming decisions I've made in a long while. It's damned convenient.

Slow in what sense? I'm considering buying it for the Vita. Bad load times or are you referring to the story?

Just load times and how long battles take in general. I like FFIX but these were criticisms back when it released even. All I mean is that it could be hard to come back to because of that for some people.

The PS1 release had bad load times (battles taking sometimes forever to load, especially in disc 3 for some reasons). IIRC battles themselves were a bit slow. don't know if digital versions corrected that though.
It was not THAT bbad but by today standards maybe it's harder to tolerate.

anyway, just ordered a Vita ._.

This game looks gorgeous on the PS Vita~
Still my #1 FF of all time even if I don't like the combat that much.

Word of advice though: I'd prob. recommend not stealing from bosses since Zidane's steal rate for rarer equipment or items is very low.
