Valve's voice actor: HL3 not in dev for several reasons; insufficient Mo-Cap tech.

Oh, bitch bitch bitch.
Why is it so hard to believe that Valve developers aren't interested in another Half-Life game?

Valve gives developers the opportunity to experiment with ideas. Why on earth would anyone who is given that latitude want to work on a scripted, cinematic shooter -- a genre that has effectively been done to death at this stage?

In fact, they should be praised for NOT wanting to work on the Half-Life series - not because the series is bad, but because it shows that they're willing to embrace the creative freedom they've been given.

The creative freedom of L4D3!

HL3 is going to be a giant lego set. Valve will give you all the tools to make the game and then you can share it with everyone else. There won't be one HL3, there will be thousands of them.

I think this in part goes back to Gabe's semi-infamous talk on player interactivity with the world. You know, how players can only interact with the world in on the level of a mentally handicapped person. Canned scenes with no way to interact with them other than to run around like a headless chicken is something Half-Life 2 is particularly known for, aside from positive aspects. Maybe they have a vision for gameplay/interactivity and storytelling systems no one yet has an answer for? Could be.

I still think that someone, maybe just a small group of people, are working on HL3 until the time is right for full development.

I feel like Valve won't release HL3 unless it's mindblowingly revolutionary. I think Occulus Rift will be required if or when HL3 does come out. Or at the very least, somewhere in the middle of the coming generation, once developers have gotten a good feel for the hardware.

This topic title is completely inaccurate. A voice actor says it's not in development "as far as [he] knows". He wouldn't even be close to the person to confirm that it's not in development period. Shame that misinformation is allowed to spread like this.

I don't mind waiting if in the end I'm going to get a revolutionary title, both technically and in terms of gameplay. There are plenty of other games to play until then and I am past the age where I would be obsessed over a single title.

Regardless of the voice actor's comment I still believe that Half-Life 3 is in active develoment.

Becoming more and more bitter with each new Half-Life 3 rumor...

Fuck you, Valve...seriously. It'll be fucking 10 years next November since Half-Life 2 launched, and 6 years this October since Episode Two launched (ending with an emotionally crippling cliffhanger nonetheless). They fucking owe it to the fans to finish the goddamn story.

TF2 being the reason for no more Half-Life is beyond sad

Have you ever read Geoff Keighley's article about Half-Life 2's development? It's very insightful, kind of makes you understand why they would wait for something like this. Valve wanted to push forward the boundaries of video games as much as the original Half-Life did, until they can figure out what HL3 can bring to the world we won't see it.

The problem is that what they're asking for is already possible. It's never been an issue in the first place.

So we'll see it as soon as Mo-Capped Always Facing Player npcs exist!!!

Bear in mind that Lowrie has traditionally done small parts for Half-Life games (mostly stock civilians), so he may very well be further out of the loop than someone like Merle Dandridge.

So this "news" is from 2011, eh? I wonder if Valve managed to solve their crippling mocap issues since then :)

See above. The blog post is from 2011, but this thread concerns comments that were posted yesterday. They have since apparently been deleted.

What the shit? Are they serious? Who says you need 100% lifelike mo-cap to tell a story? It's a freakin' FPS, not a movie.

Not having HL3 in development is probably far more entertaining than having HL3 in development, at lest for me, on this board, as someone who feels the whole HL franchise is mediocre.

Just give me more hats, Gabe.

Valve's radio-silence about the game is silly. They stated in the past that they don't want to put the fans through the roller-coaster of game development, the highs and lows, delays and what not. But frankly, we can take it and prefer that over not knowing a thing and jumping at any loosely-connected pieces that may point to the game.

I'd be in the dick
I'm sure something of the game exists, it's just probably a small team with the expectations of the whole world on them. As sad as it makes me, I know we probably won't get many more dedicated SP games from Valve but I want the story to be finished. It won't be an infinite cash cow like Valve's other products but it would be a great send off for old Valve. I just hope they don't drop story based single player completely but if they do, at least give us HL3 first.

I can't believe this is the supposed explanation for why HL3 is not in development. It can't be real. There are many creative ways around this problem.

HL3 better be in development, dammit.

Valve, the world wants HL3 not LFD3. LFD3 might be nice and all but, come on.

I don't get it, doesn't the HL series sell a lot? It's not exactly a Shenmue or Beyond good and evil, so why is it they won't release one? Does the series not sell as much as I thought it did?

If the characters can't look at you. Then no HL3.

.... sigh

2 Portals, 2 L4Ds and literally shifting more and more tools/roles into the hands of fans and away from them. Yeah, so praise-worthy...

Well, shit. I don't think I have ever felt so bummed out.

To be honest that's quite a BS reason if they really aren't developing a game because of fucking mo-cap. But whatever. I gotta get my mind into something else, or I'm gonna get depressed.

Why can't they make the head of the mocapped actor follow the player? How is that different or harder to do than with regular animation or whatever they did in HL2?

That's a pretty dumb reason. Continue to make the best game you can with the current technology available, and then when technology catches up with your vision, you can still make another game then.

The longer they stretch it out with HL3, the higher the expectations will be. It will only be more difficult for them to actually deliver if they keep at this.
