DF/JF: Battlefield 4 PS4 vs XB1 videos/screens (900p PS4, 720p XB1)

chubigans

y'all should be ashamed
XB1 version definitely looks lower res (man those powerlines looked terrible) but I honestly thought it would be a much wider gap on the surface. Should be interesting to see how multiplayer goes.

So PS4 is, after all, more powerful than Xbox One. This game is running at a higher resolution, higher framerate, and with more effects on PS4 than on XB1. And this is despite being the cheaper system. Good work, Sony.

Goddamnit. The bone has an EVEN WORSE gamma curve problem. What the hell, that black crush is insane. If you shift the settings around you'll probably just end up crushing the whites. Gross.

The news about the scaling issues on the PS4 problems are interesting. I thought that the system had a dedicated hardware scaler like the bone?

So, apparently Kevin Dent is still saying it's native 1080p on XB1, even as people are linking him to all the articles. He claims a dev told him that it was native 1080p.

The delusion, it's so sad. Even in the shitty youtube videos you can see how it doesn't match up in resolution.

Youtube compression or not the difference isn't big enough either way for me to give a shit about. A difference that negligible wouldn't ever sway my decision to get one version over another. When I eventually do own both consoles, real differences like which consoles are my friends playing it on will be the deciding factor.

So unless DF had the wrong videos, the XO version looked better to me, regardless of resolution. Not sure why the PS4 version looked washed out.

The lighting on the XB1 verson looks better to me. The PS4 looks washed out in the DF comparison video.

Polygon on next gen reviews

Unfortunately, at this time, we can't provide final verdicts for either the Xbox One or PS4 versions of the game. Microsoft has specified that review scores must be held until November 12th at 9:00AM PST, and we were not given the opportunity to play the Xbox One version's multiplayer component. Regarding PS4, there were serious stability issues that repeatedly led to crashes after multiplayer matches concluded. As the PS4 is still more than two weeks away from its November 15th launch date, it seems premature to assume that this issue will not be resolved — and penalizing the game this far from the PS4's launch doesn't seem especially fair. We will further evaluate both next generation versions of Battlefield 4 once they launch on their respective platforms next month.

From what I can tell so far:
  • Xbox One has hardware texture filtering and scaling that can help make up for lower resolutions.
  • PS4 is still a stronger console overall.

Yeah, I don't know why they thought it was a good idea to do a comparison with different brightness/gamma levels.

DF said it's the same 30% brightness levels. They said it could be in limited color range or something like that.

With some tweaking, there's no reason I don't see why this can't be fixed. The PS4 version need not look that washed out. It's very misleading at first.

Meh. Not a huge deal. As someone with a beastly gaming rig (I'm playing BF4 on it right now, actually) a small graphical superiority just isn't something that sells me on a console. It's all about the games!!

They look similar to me. In some parts I liked the way the XO looked better (colors). The AA did look a tad better on PS4. Is the camo customizable? Because there were a few scenes where the player camo was different.

Read the analysis, they say they don't know why the gamma looks off on PS4 side. But it could be a capture issue. This is a common feature of comparisons, the contract will be different across platforms, and many mistake those differences as somehow graphical features of either version.

The soft blur thing on the PS4 is weird. Makes it less crisp than it should be, when viewing static image at least.

Looks great!

How did DF do the capture? They don't even seem to know.

Curiously, the top end is also affected, causing the image to appear distinctly washed out, as if set to limited range. This is particularly evident on PS4, which is kept free of a comparable black push to Microsoft's platform to compensate. Right now there's every possibility that it could be a capture situation, but it is worth noting that we saw no such issue on our PC captures and after returning to base, the same equipment produced a perfectly balanced picture on our PlayStation 3.

What the fuck? Gamma differences.. and why does the PS4 version look blurrier if it's running a higher resolution with the same AA?

But... that's about it.

The two are largely identical - you have to really look hard to find any differences, and when you do, the XO stands out as slightly more sharper and colourful.

Boom.

PS4 version looked most noticeably better in the scene with all the powerlines in the back.

Though the part at around 5:10 is odd. Lights showing on xbox one the ps4 one doesn't seem to have, also in the comparison pics.

All in all, maybe it's just the doomsday stuff lately but I'm happy to see it turn out this well.

They look about the same to me. The only differences are the richer colors on the Xbox One and the superior AA on the PS4 version. They both had some odd flickering when it came to textures, which really wasn't suppose to be happening on the PS4. It happened at 0:47 in on the PS4 side and 3:08 on the Xbox One side.

The black levels are seriously crushed in the X1 footage, making things pop more. This is what makes some people think it looks better. You can control this on your TV. Crushing black levels is not something you'll want, however.

Wow huge different in running launch games. Only going to get even worse when they move to next Gen only titles. Ps4 is just a great design gaming console.

"All in all, we can only give a preliminary outline of how Battlefield 4 will run on next-gen consoles, but there's plenty here that should remain the case for the final release in November. Perhaps the biggest takeaway is that, in this near-finalised state, the PS4 offers a superior experience on several fronts. The resolution is higher at 1600x900, as compared to the tried and tested 1280x720 on Xbox One, suffering as it does for more visible aliasing artefacts. Visually, the PS4 has a marked advantage with ambient occlusion effects too, which simply isn't matched on Microsoft's platform with the build we played. "

well then...

Oh is that all? JUST resolution and frame rate on a launch, cross gen title DF? :lol

I'm amazed that Digital Foundry didn't go into detail about how the Xbox One version was a botched port that didn't take full advantage of all the balanced, low latency, eSRAM enabled power that Xbox One boasts over the PS4.

They said these were still on development kits, though, correct? Could there still be changes in performance in the retail versions? If so, what would be expected?

OK. I'm going to say the X1 version is the better version. Here is what I can see in the videos:

PS4:

* More wash-out color gradiation
* Less anisotropic filtering
* Using Global Illumination (that's why X1 version is darker)
* Using more polygons
* Using more FX
* Lower res textures

X1

* Lower resolution
* Sharper contrast
* Better anisotropic filtering
* Higher res textures
* NO GI
* Lower polygon count
* Lower FX/particles on screen

To me, the X1 version looks better because of the textures and sharper detail.

Xbox One version clearly has artificial sharpening bump way up to compensate for resolution. Extremely harsh jaggies, and haloing is a dead give away.

The PS4 on the other hand looks like it could use a smidgen of additional sharpening despite is greater resolution.

Really hoping this isn't a sign of things to come for both systems because if this is next-gen it's pretty sad.

I'm with the "XB1 looks better" people. I know there are some technical advantages to the PS4 version, but the image quality looks more appealing to my eye. Maybe it's because it's darker; shit, I don't know. Regardless, the gap ain't big.
