DF/JF: Battlefield 4 PS4 vs XB1 videos/screens (900p PS4, 720p XB1)

Looking at high resolution pics on a cell phone size screen is going to make it a whole lot harder to see a difference, for those asking.* Take a look at the same footage on a tv or large monitor, and you'll see resolution differences much more clearly.

*Anyone who lived through the "the human eye can't perceive bluray on a normal size tv" arguments should probably already know this :)

So wtf these next-gen games cannot even run native 1080P standard on these next-gen consoles!?

Fuck man-
1. This is a launch title.
2. This title is running at 60 FPS.
3. This title does not take advantage of customizations and esoteric hardware specific programming.
4. This title is coming out on a stupid amount of consoles, PC, and next-gen. Cross generation bullshit.

Analyzing the comparisons for more than a few seconds really shows which version has the upper hand. Both look great with a cursory look though.

oh wow, really big differences here. PS4 version is looking much better.

Impressions from a non-tech, non-PC guy.

At first glance I thought the XB1 looked better because of the sharpness of the image. But on further inspection it just looks like the sharpness on the TV settings were jacked all the way up. I'm sure that's not the case, but that's the appearance it has for me. As a result, there's seems to be a lot more aliasing. They both look great to me, though. It doesn't appear to me that the XB1 is any kind of slouch in the graphics department.

Despite pushing ~50% more pixels, that ~40% difference in frame-rate as well;

CANT EVEN SEE THE FUCKING GUN HERE.

LOOK AT THIS

Do you SERIOUSLY think the devs intended the game to look like it does on the Xbone?

look at artist's screenshot

You can't see the gun on the XBO version.

Loving all these 'read the article' posts. Looking at the pics and short comparison vids the Xbone version looks slightly better. Maybe when I see them compared on a big screen TV the resolution will make a difference on the PS4s favor.
I don't know/care what kind of effects/compromises they are using but those saying the PS4 version looks much better should go get an appointment with the eye doctor.
No, it really doesn't. It just looks DIFFERENT.
There's some weird thing going on with the contrast, which makes the characters models look horrible in certain scenes.

PS4 is 900p with the more stable framerate.
Xbox One is 720p with a worse framerate than the PS4.

Clearly the PS4 version is the superior version. That doesn't mean the Xbox One version looks horrible or ugly, it looks very much comparable and not as bad as many of us had expected. Clearly the 720p resolution managed to keep it competitive with the 900p PS4 version in terms of visual fidelity.

Yep... PS4 version is defintely better.
Xone colors are there to hide defects... the PS4 version is more clear, with no pixel distortion, probably because the higher resolution.

Also I notice that PS4 version has less pop-ins. It was confirmed better frame-rate too.

A static image side by side is not that clear. But overall we can see that PS4 version is clearly better.

Read the article.

Accepting a poorer framerate and resolution is simply moving the goalposts from a few weeks ago. How low are your expectations now for a more expensive console?

I dont have to read the article. I used my eyes. The 2 version are very very close. I some areas the X1 actually looks better. Overall I do think the PS4 version looks slightly better but it is way closer than anyone here was thinking it would be and you know it.

I would be real, real worried about the XO at this point if you somehow weren't already. That they're doing this to the image before it even reaches the TV means there's no way to properly un-fuck the IQ. This is the kind of studio that was doing their damnedest to get the two versions to hit parity, and they couldn't even get close.

Edit - If this really is a DF issue - intentional or otherwise - they need to get tossed.

The XB1 version looks better than the PS4 version in the same way a TV in Best Buy with the sharpness and contrast set to max looks better than a properly calibrated TV.

Alright here we go.

Here is the Jack upload vs. the DF upload screens

Top is the DF video, you can see the crushed blacks

Bottom is the Jack upload, same scene you can see the difference in the wheel black

DF did it on purpose from what I see

DF rep is officially down the drain if this is true

Reminds me of the old days shooting pictures. And then scanning them into Photoshop with a Kodak film scanner.

Miss your focus on that basketball layup? Hit it with unsharp mask and no one will ever see it on the 250 dpi newspaper that comes out the next day.

DF rep is officially down the drain if this is true
Nah, they were just trying really hard to have an even comparison. Real life isn't a lab where the variables are controlled so tightly.

Ok just to be clear on my train of thought, I looked at the recent pics and the PS4 has the better aliasing (see steering wheel pic) and textures but with a softer look. MS's version of the game has a darker color contrast bullshit just to fool the eye they have the sharper image.

Am I right or no?

You are right. If you want the PS4 version to look like the One version just up your sharpness on the TV, or put it in Vivid mode.

Okay, there has to be some other explanation for this.

Right?

Wow!!! The lower res X1 version saying come at me bro! I'm surprised by how decent the X1 version looks! The PS4 version looks somewhat washed out.

oi....this is some shady shit if true

So have DF done this deliberately to flatter the xbone version?!

Seems many here have fallen for it. Might as well darken the images and lower the res further and it will look better still.

Worth checking out Jack Frag's vids - very different.

DigitalFoundry got some splaining to do.

He did. Read the bloody article.

This leads us to a second issue that affects both console releases: gamma levels. We went into the review event having never hooked up our equipment to either next-gen platform before, and our tests with BF4 gave some curious results we want to revisit with the final game on retail hardware. Similar to the Xbox 360, Microsoft's new platform seems to enforce a colour push towards the lower end, leaving us with more saturated colours and deeper blacks. It's just cause to head towards Battlefield 4's brightness settings, but in the interest of a fair test we kept this at the default 30 per cent for all platforms.

He'll revisit this later to talk about it in the final version.

those talking about the Xbone's textures being "better" because of the sharpness i would ask you to look at the comparisons with the PC version....

everyone here is in agreement that the PC version is the "definitive" version to get...which console looks closest to the PC version (most apparent in skin)?? its the PS4 by a mile...

the Xbone is artificially sharp which just adds to the jaggies and shimmer..

They blew a huge opportunity. Force both systems to 720p, let the TV do the scaling, compare the image softness.

Plus, while you are at it, check to see if PS4 nails 60fps when you force it to 720p.

PS4 was 50-60fps throughout and never trailed the X1 in that category. They don't need 720P, they need a competent scaler.
