Titanfall has maximum player count of 12 (alongside AI) [Respawn comments post #558]

To the incredibly silly people suggesting a future version (PS4 or otherwise) would support 8v8 or whatever players: Dota 2 is 5v5 on PC where there are no limitations, what a terrible game right? Player counts are only relevant based on game design, sure they could design the game around 64v64, maybe a sequel will be, but clearly this game is designed around 6v6.

Holy crap I can't believe the reactions in this thread, just insanity left and right. Negative reactions ranging from claims of engine limitations, hardware limitations, enforced story elements in multiplayer, claims that the player count is 'trash' without any understanding of context.

I'll tell it to you straight: This thread is the reason why the gaming community is constantly bullshit by publishers PR, and to a large degree they are justified in doing so.

Don't worry, I'll vouch for them.
Uh, yeah, except for the people that have "Militia" above their heads.

Did you read the sentence that I posted? If you do not PAUSE the video, one could reasonably assume that those are actual players. Especially while watching those trailers only once.

Unless you pause the video, one could reasonably expect everyone with a blue/green name over the character to be an actual player.

There are 11 "players" on screen here with more off to the side.

That's really what rubs me the wrong way about this. They're trying to make the game more awesome than it is or something. I'm a CS guy myself, so I know 6v6 can be just fine. But then they go and double the player count with bots.

Thank god, anything more than that becomes a clusterfuck of who cares. Like Bad Kid Yawn 4.

I've played some amazing TF2 matches recently with over 20 players. Really fun. It all depends how the game is designed.

I'll have to wait and see what the bots are like to play against but I remain confused by the decision.

Just reading a couple pages I have to agree with you. There is plenty of ignorance floating around.

But maybe it's intentional design?

Courtesy of gaffer CyReN (saw his Twitter feed) and Beyond Entertainment. I remember the thread awhile back where this first popped up but I believe this is the only time it's been confirmed.

Ok that's a bummer for me. I mean it's fine if this was an option in the game that also had a higher player count maps. 6vs6? Seriously? After that E3 reveal it felt like the f'ing galaxy was at war. So what's holding them back?

(Super) Monday Night Combat did something similar. Didn't require a "cloud" either.

I expected something along the lines of Battlefield 2142 mixed with Hawken. Instead, we're getting what is essentially a fucking MOBA.

This has to be the most disappointing news for me in a long while. I was looking forward to picking up Titanfall the moment it released and abandoning Battlefield 4 in favor of it. So much for that idea...

Lower playercount is generally better IMO. Higher playercount sounds nice until you actually play it and it's just a clusterfuck. More people = more lag, more people afk/dropping midmatch, less teamwork etc.

I'm guessing the AI creeps are there to keep the esthetics of a large scale battle. They also help increase the survive-ability of the human players without making them bulletsponges like most console FPS.

Some are also NPC story characters.

Theres a reason people were surprised by the 6v6 announcement.
Its because they didn't realize most of the people on screen are actually AI, which is what i said in my previous post.

Its a mistake alot of people clearly made, meaning its an easy mistake.

Hard to see any problem when reading numbers on paper. Any multiplayer worth its salt finds a balance between player count and map size, considering weapon/equipment balance, objective placement, and so on. Padding maps with more players than necessary can often be detrimental to the flow of maps and balance of teams/classes. Besides, in the case of Titanfall they've been rather clear this isn't typical Call of Duty with bots, but a multiplayer environment that tries to balance bot fodder alongside stronger/high skilled players.

But they are just replacing padding it with players with padding it with bots.

Less players is far better for mine. Though, I play competitive CS a lot so I would think that..

CoD scrubs might think different.

I have no reason to doubt their design decision. It's not like this is caused by a platform limitation.

This. Did you people also complain that your chess set only came with 16 pieces per side, yet you had all those empty squares on the board? I mean, at least give the option to fill up those other squares with pieces, amirite? I guess they just don't make chess boards big enough.

Wow, I feel like I'm on a time machine and its 1999 when such a low multiplayer count was acceptable...

Now that I'm here, might as well tell everyone how crappy The Phantom Menace will be...

*SHOCKING NEWS*

People are seriously still getting excited about this game?

Why?

I fully agree with the titanfall opinion, but it kind of dragged on.

All he needed to say was that the game looked brown and grey (and stupid) and be done with it.

No just a terrible comparison.

Why? What is the value of this?
End of the day, it's not an isolated player count that makes or breaks the game, it's how the player count is balanced with the map and game design. If the sensation of busy gameplay is achieved, then it doesn't fucking matter.
It does matter to me because I find shooters to be fun as a multiplayer experience of servers being more like large lobbies where groups of players can gather with both people they know well and people they might not be very familiar with. Very low player counts on a shooter shift design to focus more on small insular groups that roam instead of allowing larger communities that can really thrive. Something like player count can have a monumental impact on how players move between and interact with others in games.

Makes sense. I have no idea why people start thinking it would be 64 players or whatever.

Given that all players will have titans following them, there are lots of AI players on the field, etc, a 6v6 player count just makes sense. The maps will be far from empty.

Do you know how lame this f'ing sounds? Bah

To be honest, if they have ai bots playing, what is the difference between that and replacing bots with players? This seems to be less about map size than technology limitations the more I think about it.

Or it could be gameplay design?

Uh, yeah, except for the people that have "Militia" above their heads.

I guess anyone who missed that must be an idiot then. I actually didn't know about the AI players, thought it was all real players, and considering it was an early built at a public event the "militia" shit didn't mean anything.

How many of you people have played Operation Locker on 32v32?

It's fucking awful. If you don't get sniped by some worthless recon that ends up maxing at 3-1 with zero caps/plants/whatever, you end up getting shot by one of like 6 supports bipoding a chokepoint.

If the maps aren't made for huge player counts, there's no point in whining about low player counts. Some of the most fun I had in multiplayer was with Halo 2/3/Reach(kiss my ass, Reach was a greatly enjoyable experience, MLG/GB/Progaming can go fuck itself) was in 4v4 and 6v6.

We'll see how this turns out. I have a feeling it will be quite well.

It's actually kinda genius as it will give everyone high k/d ratios. dat positive reinforcement.

I'm willing to bet that killing the "creeps" or bots will only affect you in that match, either by in match experience points, perks or whatever. Killing player controlled chars will however be recorded. Again, there have been FPS MOBAs before, and titanfall seems to follow that formula.

All the footage made this look like a smaller scale BF 2142 with a sizeable player count so this news really bums me out. :(

I thought part of the reason for the AI is that the game is meant to merge some single player / campaignish elements into the multiplayer.

Having bots to provide context and story elements and mid-battle events makes some sense if thats something they're shooting for.

The bots are less mobile, pose less of a threat and can't drop in their own Titans. Substituting them with "real players" doesn't equate because real players are a greater hazard other than just their ability to aim.

No just a terrible comparison.

It actually seems like a very apt comparison.

Dota 2's map is designed for 5v5, as Titanfall's maps are balanced around 6v6.

Dota 2 is considered a very finely tuned game.

You guys are right. Nobody plays games like CounterStrike.

CS 1.6 was also in the top 10 during European peak hours today.

I was assuming it was going to be 8v8. Kinda disappointing, but at the same time, if they tested it, and found out it is a better game with the count being 6v6, then I trust them.

The designers know best. Its just the A.I. that's got me questioning this thing. I found MAG to be fun with Squad vs Squad mitigating the massive player count. Hope they have Player only lobbies.
