Videogame facts that blow your mind (SuperMarioBros. SHOCKING SECRET INSIDE p #70)

Yeah it's most definitely Rhydon. Rhydon appears in the very first early '90s concept arts for Pokemon (back when it was still Capsule Monsters), it's the first Pokemon programmed into the game (as evidenced by it's index number 001 in code) and the sprite very much resembles him so it is very likely it was done based on Rhydon concept art.

Sugimori: The first Pokémon were Rhydon, Clefairy, and Lapras. At first, we’d planned to have Pokémon living alongside humans, making their lives easier. So, during the early stages of development, many of the characters we came up with had clear roles, like carrying things around or sailing across the sea with people on their backs.

an oldie but goldie..

Not even true. He is clearly a layer above both the lava and the edge. This is because the graphics were so advanced and colorful that it felt like Mario was popping out of the screen. That feedback that Nintendo got is what inspired them to start experimenting with 3D in games.

Did atlus rip-off Drake and Josh when designing Chie?

Thanks for ruining Chie's design. lol
I have my doubts about that Rhyhorn one. I always figured it was an Arcanine, since those statues are supposed to look like them thar dog statues in Japan, and Arcanine is sort of based on the same motif.
The statue looks nothing like an Arcanine. It is clearly a Rhydon.
So apparently Mario Kart: Double Dash's world is connected like Mario Sunshine's, in that you can see landmarks from other tracks in the game.

I knew about a few of them, but I had no idea there were so many.
Great video. GameXplain rules.

Weird wording on that graphic. Rhyhorn is "the default sprite?" Default for what? It's a commonly-used sprite for many Pokemon when you see them walking around on the map, but I don't see how it's default.

It is true that it was the first Pokemon designed, and I totally believe that the walking sprite for it was the first one they made. But is it like, if you create a new NPC with no sprite information given, they end up as Rhyhorn?

I believe Rhyhorn is also the first Pokemon they programmed into the game, and Kangaskhan being the second (http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/List_of_Pokémon_by_index_number_(Generation_I) ) which is related to how sometimes a glitch Pokemon will be replaced by Rhyhorn (the first programmed Pokemon) and how sometimes they'll evolve into Kengaskhan (apparently they can become Clefairy too, which is index 4).

Yeah, MissingNo would always evolve into Kangaskhan, which led to the rumor it was a scrapped Kanga pre-evolution.

That's not my doubt, though. That's fine. My doubt is that the statue is meant to by Rhydon.

It's Rhydon. That sprite is also the default sprite for a Pokemon in the party screen, also because Rhydon was the first Pokemon programmed into the game.

Super Mario Sunshine's levels aren't interconnected, they're just designed to give that illusion

People have dumped the map files and those aren't the actual levels you see in the distance

I don't think anyone thought they were physically connected? It's pretty clear from the video the assets are all lower-res.

Great Mario Kart video! I really enjoyed it.

I love when things connect like that!

Such detail from the design team despite knowing it will probably not even be noticed by the majority of people.

Reminds me of how in Donkey Kong Country Returns the levels had a flow to them, like the first level would have elements of the previous world, and as you went on the next world would start to show.

I guess Tropical Freeze probably won't have this to the same extent since the worlds are separate Islands though.

So it took me about a decade to finally confirm, but one of the most mysterious hidden Mickeys I've been told about is real. On the motherboard of every copy of Mickey Mousecapade for NES (Mickey Mouse in Japan), there is a Mickey Mouse head soldered right above the pins.

It's a bit hard to spot, but it's there, sorry for the less than stellar image quality.

Wow, that's pretty neat. Looks pretty cool with the gold pins.

Not a huge find, but this track in Max Payne 3 is very Metroid Primeish

Vaguely similar synth pads, what a find.

I didn't know that! Another one, some guy named Chicago Hellomoto worked on Mario and Donkey Kong.

He also worked on Seiken Densetsu 3 and a little PS1 rogue-like gem called Azure Dreams.

So everybody knows about this masterpiece of a movie.

I9TnOFY.jpg

It somehow managed to pull in highly respected actors such as Dennis Hopper and to a lesser extent Bob Hoskins. But neither actors were the first choices for their respective roles. Originally Danny DeVito was approached to Mario (and direct), but wanted to see a script before he signed on. He declined. Both Arnold Schwarrzenegger,Kevin Costner and Michael Keaton were approached to play "King Koopa" but turned down the role. Before Hoskins took the role, Tom Hanks was actually signed on to play Mario. The studio got rid of him because of a string of box office bombs and they thought he wanted too much money. Harold Ramis also went to a meeting to see if he wanted to direct the movie.

I don't think any casting or directing changes could have turned the Mario Bros movie into something that can be enjoyed unironically, but it would be hilarious to peer into an alternate universe where Tom Hanks had his career destroyed by a Mario film.

The Real Abed

Perma-Junior
I can't imagine anyone else in any of those roles.

Bob Hoskins
John Leguizamo
Dennis Hopper
Samantha Mathis <3
Fisher Stevens
Uh.. the guy who played the other cousin
Mojo Nixon... whoever that is

The perfect cast for the perfect storm.

This is amazing. A true new mindblowing fact, if you ask me.

That's pretty cool. Kind of redeems me asking for that game in letters to Santa constantly the year it came out, only to get it for Christmas and not really like it.

Not really shocking but cool I thought.

Hidden in the code of Pokemon Yellow there was an unused game trade that could have you obtain a Mew. Once traded the Mew would be nicknamed Bart. Likely a reference to Bartholomew. His sprite in Pokemon Yellow also looked very similar to Bart from The Simpsons.

I found this gem on Supper Mario Broth just a bit ago and it blew me away, I'm sure I won't be the only one.

Something a lot of people miss in Super Mario World: due to the X and the Y buttons doing the same thing, it’s possible to shoot fireballs while holding objects and running.
