Capcom's output on 3DS is strange because it's just random.

They could easily make a new portable RE using Revelations engine, yet they sat on it. They could have ported Zak and Wiki made a 3DS version of Basara (after all the Wii engine exists and it's obviously easy for them to go from Wii to 3DS since they've already done do in the past).

Many of their iOS games would also benefit from it (like the gng games or the new bof, hell even porting older bof games would work)

Yet they keep playing it extremely safe and stick to monhun and ace attorney.

They keep playing it safe on 3DS because when they try to do something different:

Capcom ends up with less than desirable results.

Revelations was a 2012 release. It's not impossible to think that Capcom has a followup in development. Zack and Wiki wasn't exactly a blockbuster on Wii, so a port to anything was unlikely. Based on Sengoku Basara 4's performance I'd say more releases is probably not what the property needs, but it has another anime on the way and it would be a waste to let that air without new products on the shelves ...

If Dragon's Dogma Quest, and Onimusha Soul prove successful, Capcom will probably port Breath of Fire 6 to a PlayStation platform simply due to ease. Of course that could change if that F2P Initial D 3DS game makes oodles of money for Sega.

In case anyone's curious, Gaist Crusher is already 62% off on Amazon, and the game's not even two months old.

Except that Vita only sold 95,000 units in the US in December. Doing good in Japan though but unfortunately it no way makes up for the dismal US sales

Oh I'm in no delusion about it's state in the west but if you compare this year to the last, it's something to smile about.

Nintendo needs a players choice line. Games on 3ds are way too expensive.

They also need 2ds and a proper account system.

I want to play the games but the platform sucks. Make people want to buy a 3ds nintendo.

Opportunity cost.

They don't find those games to offer sufficient potential upside relative to their risk to put staff on it versus putting staff on mobile games or other titles where they think they could make more profit per money spent.

Im sure that's what capcom thinks... yet I think something about what games they choose to develop is flawed.
Last gen they heavily invested in hd flops like dark void and also developed 2 rail gun shooters for wii.
A wii port of re5 would have made a lot more sense.

Capcom has made flawed decisions in the past, but I'm not sure a Zack & Wiki port or a follow-up to a ho-hum selling RE handheld games are really the big ticket misses I would hang them out to dry for.

Dragon's Dogma being their second most expensive game and only doing 1.3 million units on the other hand, especially with most of those being in the notably less growth potential Japanese market, is something I'd note as a much bigger misfire. Given this was also the Devil May Cry team, that franchise took much longer and performed worse when they had to outsource it to continue while Dragon's Dogma was made.

Lost Planet 3 was also obviously a huge waste of time sticking to their more recent decisions.

3DS sales are really alarming. I wonder if it will come close to 30k next week. I hope not!

Apparently Dragon Quest Monsters 2 (name?) is out next week. That should help 3DS console sales.

2DS will do nothing for them in Japan. I don't know why people keep thinking it will spur on Japanese sales. There is a reason why it hasn't been released or announced for release there.

Well if it sold as well as the regular 3DS, it at least would increase their bottom line. If not, maybe a proper 3DS price cut is in order? Or a cheaper redesigned clamshell 3DS?

Well 2DS does go against a big reason why portables are popular in Japan. Really a price drop would probably be more effective. I do think the 2ds will have some impact if its priced accordingly.

The reason they didn't realease it is because they thought their fall lineup was already incredibly stacked (as did most.) The 2DS will spur on sales in Japan simply for the lower price.

People said the same thing about Vita TV and that is much less expensive than the regular Vita. I'm not convinced it will be a total flop, but they likely haven't released there yet because it will be the least important market for the device.

Vita TV is not a portable console like the 2DS. The 2DS may be less portable, but it still is a portable console. The two aren't comparable.

2DS would be a really cheap SKU and could coincide with a price drop in Japan and it should help it sell well the upcoming FY.

And on top of that 3DS has a huge list of games, if they introduce the 2DS at a very low price a lot of people will jump in. 2DS is also compatible with all games while TV is not.

I'm sure the Wii mini would have been a raging success too. The 2ds was obviously not designed for the Japanese market.

I think #10 is PS3, not PSV.

And...I feel slightly disappointing. We hyped up digital sales and only get a monthly Top 10? :/ Would've liked Top 30 as usual with Famitsu.

I tell ya, I'd love to know what the craic is there. Not the MonHun stuff, I get that. What I don't get is Capcoms steadfast refusal to throw the Vita a bone in any way shape or form. If say, Tecmo Koei had released Sengoku Basara 4, there would definitely have been a Vita version. Probably would've done OK for 'em too, depending on how difficult the porting was.

I understand that the Vita isn't the most tempting platform for devs, even in Japan. Capcom however have shown a degree of disinterest in the platform that I feel is borderline strange.
While the degree of Capcom's disinterest in Vita does seem out of the ordinary I would also say Tecmo Koei is an almost inverse case. Vita was tanking harder than Wii U it's first year and Tecmo Koei kept putting out a good amount of games that continually bombed on it during that period. They seemed almost determined to build a Vita market no matter what and threw an inordinate amount of stuff at the system until finally Toukiden turned things around. Credit to them I guess but they've extended the system a lot more goodwill than it arguably deserved.

Famitsu released 30 rankings for September and October.

All the times you talk about digital sales and ignore the Top 30 I posted for September and October, I feel as my work translating it was a waste of time :(

The reason they didn't realease it is because they thought their fall lineup was already incredibly stacked (as did most.)

Really? You asked Nintendo Japan and this is what they told you? Of course you didn't, you're just pulling this out of thin air.

Regardless of how much data is gotten, it is better than nothing!

FFX/X-2 and ALBW only had 11 days of tracking. I guess digital sales are front-loaded for most games like it is with retail.

Could the continued Vita sales be future PS4 owners over there gearing up for Remote Play? I really wish our broadband was as solid as Japan / Koreas here. Our average is like what, 10Mb a second. Keep hearing over there it averages around 40Mb/s.

I think Remote Play will be big over in Japan. Could really help Vita sales for the duration.

It's good to see Vita sales having a baseline of possibly 20k per week. With that said, still not selling well overall.. And the Wii U is obviously struggling.. Hopefully the lineup this year can help sales..

Not actually that important

When you think about it, it's baffling to say the least that Dragon's Dogma didn't even get a late PC port in the west. It just made perfect sense. That one decision to me speaks volumes about the level of incompetence shown by their products' planning producers this whole gen.

3ds already is the 3dsi from a design point, maybe they need a 3ds fat

I'd personally like a matte 3DS with some of the design adjustments that were made on the XL. If I remember correctly, all the normal 3DS's are glossy and the XLs are matte right?

The 3DS is the Lite from a design point. A 3DSi will improve upon the specs of the console such as more ram, slightly larger screens etc. It'd also be thinner and have a matte finish.

As much as I think Inafune is basically a fraud when it comes to development, I do think he is a great businessman.

For example, he was the one who pushed for them to make titles like Lost Planet and Dead Rising early in the generation to compete with the West, which helped get Capcom off to a great start, and when Monster Hunter started taking off on PSP he noted in an interview that he told the development/marketing teams that they would keep pushing until they could beat Dragon Quest, which they basically did.

That kind of competitive and aggressive spirit I feel is missing from Capcom these days, along with not making as good decisions tactically.

WiiU sales will keep falling as long there's no more games coming to fill it's schedule.

What if Nintendo and third-parties forsaw the holiday bump and managed to fill the next months schedule properly? Sales would have been kept steady, no doubt.

Will Famitsu combine Wii Fit U sales next week with the Wii Fit U bundle that has sold 72k so far?

Because Wii was a hot platform in 2013, yeah...
Wasn't it released 2012? Anyway it was a bad comparison as the situations aren't the same, just thought of another instance of hardware made for a specific area.
And at 15,000 yen the 3ds is already incredibly cheap. Dropping it to 9k while removing pocketability, BC and 3D is going to appeal to a very small user base.

The 2DS is supposed to be the bargain product. It will be there for those who don't want to shell up as much cash for a 3DS or 3DS XL.

It would increase their userbase, so more software can sell. It sold 2.11M in NA and EU in Q3 alone (which was when it was released) which is more than the OG 3DS which sold 1.1M. And by sold, I mean shipped.

It still retains DS BC. The people who bought the 3DS for the 3D were the early adopters and are most likely to be a much smaller audience than one that would buy a 2DS.

The 2DS was made with the western markets in mind, but I do think that it could do reasonably well in Japan and help its performance even more this upcoming FY.
