Bethesda doesn't use game design docs?

Hello there! First of all I'm not hating Bethesda or their games but found this video very interesting and giving some answers about how some Bethesda games are done (including Starfield).
Of course that can't be only problem but still. Take a look:

Their games are more about additive design. A bunch of concepts and possible content. Get as much in as you can till it's time to call it. It's not necessarily a bad way to go. Results are a little messy but I don't count the messiness or tightness as a huge indicator of how good the game is.

Wasn't it also Todd Howard himself describing their process like "we start to make shit (the world etc.) and then try to 'find the fun'" or something like that? It seems that for Starfield in particular, this "process" didn't work out.

Maybe they should rethink their whole process and their technology stack.

Sounds like a very chaotic approach to organization, with some upsides (unique situations) but a lot of downsides

Already knew they had no regard for immersion since Skyrim.

For example being imprisoned was fine since it just fades to black until you’ve done your time. However there’s a quest in Cidna mine iirc that forces you to actually play while being in prison. Suffice to say all their quest design regarding getting all your equipment confiscated and lack of tools to defend yourself and have a weapon is completely destroyed by the magic system. Like is there not at least a thought for a spell nullifier or a shackle to deprive access to magicka? Magic is completely accessible to everyone in TES. It’s not like it’s a minor quest so I dunno why they haven’t thought of the ramifications of magic.

Because Bethesda is operating under the false assumption that because they had a smash hit 13 years ago, everything they touch turns to gold.

Their track record since Skyrim has been abysmal and if it weren't for the bazillion dollars that game brought in they would've been six feet under for years.

edit: holy shit the video that guy is referencing is 8 HOURS LONG and has 271k views since two days ago. What the fuck.

Sounds like a shit strategy based on luck. The exact opposite of Nintendo who crank out fun game after fun game.

You don't make a meal and then try to find the delicious aspects of it.

Valve doesn't either. They use the "make something quick and small with existing tools -> find the fun -> convince the team -> iterate on that idea" cabal approach.

It stems from the do it yourself 'mod community' approach. A lot of concepts in paper just don't work in practice. Just built something practical and find unique concepts that way. (At least, that's how it used to go with the budget and upfront investments where still in proportion. Not like now)

Checks out. Eight hours is about as far as you need to go in Starfield to realize it’s unadulterated trash.
