It’s hilarious that people are still defending Phil, despite the fact it’s all happened on his watch.

Xbox could have been a serious contender this gem with someone with a better attitude in charge. Let’s hope they fire him and get someone else for the next one who can make Xbox Series XXX more of a success.
The issue predates him.
Games need studios. Xbox fumbled this badly, by going hard on 3rd party deals during Xbox 360.
If MS bought 3-4 competent studios back then, they wouldn't have been in this situation.
And closing fable studio didn't do them any favors.

Who do you think hires these people? Imaginary people?
Sure, but you seem to want to shift the blame everywhere else. Even phil spencer admitted of his failures in the kinda funny inteview, time for you to admit it to.

You said originally said this "The issue predates him" the issues exist with him and the xbox leadership.

If phil had these studios, then this situation wouldnt have happened at all.

Xbox main mess is their lack of standout games and that is due to limited studios.

That is the core problem of Xbox, which Phil had to fix.

Look at the date when those studios were acquired. Most of them happened under his belt.

That is way too late to the game.

wow. Are we going to cling on this one? Even after reading that article by jason?
Article by jason doesn't change the fact the xbox released the game in it's current state.

Do you think bethesda have the autonomy to release games on gamepass? Where do you think that decision comes from in the end?

It's comes from the parent company, kinda what you said here

It's the parent company.

Maybe if you focus on the core problem of that news first.
Zenimax was the one that started this mess of a game. Xbox got the end of the stick.

If it was the intiative, then yes. The alarm bell would have gone badly.

Not denying of the problems that existed prior to xbox acquiring them.

But xbox had control enough of bethesda to continue it (just like they did when cancelling the ps5 version) and make the ultimate decision to release it on gamepass in it's current form.

There was only 2 option for the game.
Cancel the entire game or release it and forget about it.
Either option were going to be a pr nightmare.

We saw what happened when they cancelled scalebound. Moves like that can result in studio closure like fable studio. Not to mention the studio saw 70% of people leave over time as time went on.

Third option: Delay and actually fix what can be fixed, stuff like AI can be fixed(this was a big issue), 60 fps can be implemented(they told people it's coming right?), no doubt core working of the game can't be changed but you can fix the rough bits.

But xbox leadership(not bethesda remember this bit) decided they were gonna be cool and promise a 12 month window for some of there games. Forza and starfield didn't make it, so they had to release atleast one so it didn't end up them with even more egg on their face.

The game had a delay and even that couldnt fix the game.
The ideas implementation were horrible and the approach was bad.

Arkane shouldnt have touched this game in the first place.

At least this bad news is going to be the wake up call that they needed badly. Watch what your studios are doing. There is a limit to freedom creativity.

I forget the timing but wasn't Phil Spencer in charge of Microsoft Games for several years prior to attaining his current position?

If things are terrible for Xbox then it's pretty clear whose to blame for this situation. Phil Spencer has been in charge for over 10 years so he's definitely partially responsible for this situation. I dont really see how he isn't responsible for at least some of it.

Now if the competition starts fucking things up then Jim Ryan will also be responsible for that.

Of course there's probably many more people that have lead to this situation but the ones at the top make extremely important decisions for the brands.

Impressive for both the PS5 and Switch. Especially for Switch, being number 1, given how old the system is.

Xbox is really dissapointing, but about expected given that MS is moving away from consoles

Starfield has to run on Series S to a decent standard because it’s first party, and it’s being made by a PC centric dev so minimum required specs should be very approachable. The game will be much bigger on PC in terms of sales than on Xbox. It will probably boost GP on PC more than it will on Xbox too.

People expecting Starfield to be another Halo 1 moment for Xbox are missing a ton of context.

How the hell can you be down 16% at this stage of the gen.
I think the main problem with Microsoft is they are essentially a clone of the competition with less genuine quality exclusives. Not helping their exclusives are on PC day one as well which I still think has been detrimental to their hardware sales.

It's an issue of supply in Japan though ;)

But yeah I know, it's weird because the Series S has been in stock pretty much the whole time since launch.

I get the feeling MS miscalculated the market and also miscalculated means of reducing production costs over the course of the gen. Part of the reason they took the dual-system approach was because they felt component costs would not reduce as well this gen.

But somehow, Sony are managing to reduce the costs for PS5 production; even if MS move less units I have to think they could have done similar if they weren't so quick to disregard that approach. However, they also took the X/S approach because they wanted the casuals and mainstream to hop into the ecosystem Day 1, and the S was supposed to be the way to do that, alongside Game Pass.

The gamble hasn't worked.

2 words: chip shortage.

Last year it was still an issue, and a lot of people wanting to buy a PS5 that was not available anywhere just ended up buying an XB instead, which means the XB numbers were higher than normal.
Now that the chip shortage is gone, the numbers are going back to what they should be.

You could say "both companies were affected", sure but let's say the normal ratio of PS5/XB sales is 4:1 in Europe, but if Microsoft managed to secure chips to a ratio of 2:1, then it's Microsoft that's going to profit from it.
