MSNBC and the New Hampshire Union-Leader will host an unsanctioned Democratic presidential debate just days before the state's first-in-the-nation primary, the newspaper confirmed Tuesday.

"Meet the Press" host Chuck Todd and MSNBC's Rachel Maddow will host the Feb. 4 debate, scheduled five days before the state's primary, BuzzFeed news first reported.

There was no word on whether Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) or former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton would participate, but former Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley said in a statement he would attend the debate.

Rep. Debbie Wasserman-Schultz (D-FL), chair of the Democratic National Committee, has been dogged by criticism over the party's limited debate schedule, with opponents saying hosting only six debates amounts to a "coronation" for Clinton as the nominee.

Across the aisle, the Republican National Committee has announced a dozen debates so far, with 12 candidates still in the race.

Wasserman-Schultz recently defended the debate schedule in a Jan. 12 interview with Lenny, a newsletter founded by Lena Dunham. She said she was trying to prevent "an explosion of debates" like in the 2008 race, which featured 26 contests, including six head-to-head debates that pitted Barack Obama against Clinton.

BuzzFeed noted DNC rules prevent candidates who participate in unsanctioned debates from participating in the party's official debates.
Pretty much came out of no where

only Martin has agreed so far but i can see Sanders and Clinton joining

That's an interesting move. Trying to help push Bernie no doubt.

I'm glad to see Sanders's unexpected popularity pushing Clinton to the left. He has no chance of winning, but that was never the point of his candidacy. Forcing the party to the left and bringing the issue of campaign financing into the public eye is a great achievement on its own

Not surprising, but disgusting nonetheless. Hopefully all three candidates go and the DNC is forced to update their shitty rules.

Interestingly it might actually help the anti-establishment image of anyone that goes. Hilary could stand to use some.

Will the officially sanctioned debates still go ahead if there is only one candidate in attendance, basically giving them an unchallenged platform?

If so, will this end up in a game of chicken where Sanders and Clinton wait to see what the other is doing until the last minute?

since all the "official" debates are over, it really doesnt matter now anyways i guess

what a stupid ass rule

And so incredibly myopic. The DNC really should have given this more though.t

Neither Sanders nor O'Malley are ball players. And their presence forces Hillary's hand.

Hasn't Hillary been generally acknowledged as the debate winner? Not sure why O'Malley or Sanders would want to.

Sanders was generally acknowledged as winning the last one, and probably wants to take another shot because he's behind and has nothing to lose anyway. Clinton, on the other hand, has a lot to lose from a loss and not much to gain from a win even if it is more likely she does win.

There's two more, actually (Feb 11th/March 9th). O'Malley won't be eligible unless he has won any delegates (hugely unlikely), which is why he's probably been so gung-ho about this. For Sanders, it's still a difficult decision. If he wins Iowa, the optics will be terrible if Clinton is seen as avoiding him/legitimizing the DNC, so he'll probably go for it, because if he doesn't win Iowa he's done anyway.

While that might be true, Sanders' ratings have ticked up after every debate. He just wants attention, because many Americans still don't know what he stands for.

Rachel Maddow has been sort of pushing for something like this on her show, asking candidates and reporters from the Union-Leader about the schedule and whether an unsanctioned debate would be possible.

Didn't actually expect to see it happen though. Will be interesting to see who shows up and what the DNC's reaction is.

I think the DNC will flip out, but who cares. Sanders should at least do it. More debates for him would be good for him.

Hillary will probably lose NH anyway so she should at least give it a try.

Plus prevents a "got legit shook after last debate, too scared to show up" narrative from arising.

Although that one would most likely only play up well with those that have already been converted.
