20th June 2017 : Paris Air Show, Le Bourget, France

Qatar Airways was today announced the World’s Best Airline at the SKYTRAX 2017 World Airline Awards. Voted Best Airline by travellers across the world in the annual passenger survey, the Doha based carrier has now won the prestigious Airline of the Year title for a fourth time. Qatar Airways enjoyed further success by winning major awards for the World’s Best Business Class, the World’s Best First Class Lounge and as the Best Airline in the Middle East.

Singapore Airlines, a perennial favourite in the awards was ranked No. 2 in the world, also receiving awards as the Best Airline in Asia, the World’s Best Business Class seat and for having the Best Premium Economy Onboard Catering.

Referred to as the “Oscars of the aviation industry”, the World Airline Awards are held in high esteem for clarity of process and independence, with no outside sponsorship or external influence. The survey voting processes and awards results analysis were subject to detailed, independent assessment by the UK advertising authority (ASA) in 2015 and found fully compliant, transparent and independent.

The survey enables any airline in the world to be nominated, allowing travellers to make their own choice, underlining the brand as the Passenger’s Choice Awards.

19.87 million eligible survey entries were counted in the final results, and 105 nationalities participated in the survey from August 2016 to May 2017. The survey covered over 325 airlines, from largest international airlines to smaller domestic carriers, measuring Quality standards for 41 KPI’s across front-line product and service factors in the Airport and Onboard environments.

Bear in mind this is a company where you can get fired for getting pregnant. Where you until quite recently had to get corporate permission to get married. Where 90% of their staff are migrant workers. I'm sure none of them are modern-day slaves.

Accounts from past and serving crew who spoke to the Guardian – usually on condition of anonymity, having signed stringent confidentiality clauses in their contracts – confirm that breaches of formal and unspoken codes of conduct have led to careers being curtailed. Sherin Galal, a flight attendant, said she briefly found herself imprisoned after the airline “terminated” her and revoked her visa: medical staff had reported her to the airline’s grooming centre after spotting a small tattoo. Like other staff, she claims to have been left in limbo after suspension from the airline. Crew are hired from abroad, and Qatar’s “kafala” sponsorship system means workers cannot find other employment, but also cannot leave the country without the company authorising an exit permit.

One long-serving cabin attendant living in Qatar kept his marriage secret, claiming that airline staff made clear that if he applied for permission he would be sacked. He said: “I’m from the Middle East. This has nothing to do with culture or religion. It is all to do with control. We all need a job – that’s why we are here, that’s why we joined. But this isn’t what we signed up for.”

Seems par for the course for that country.

Last years top 10:
1. Emirates
2. Qatar Airways
3. Singapore Airlines
4. Cathay Pacific
5. ANA All Nippon Airways
6. Etihad Airways
7. Turkish Airlines
8. EVA Air
9. Qantas Airways
10. Lufthansa

So Turkish and Qantas fell out of the top 10.

Aeroflot climbed 10 places from last year and is now higher ranked than any US airline. Virgin America was 25th last year, but dropped to 43rd and British Airways dropped from 26th to 40th and is now ranked just 1 place above easyJet in 41st :p

British Airways...lol.

#40, just above.... easyJet.

But how the fuck does Air France get to #18!? I have to fly with that shitty airline all the time, and it certainly doesn't deserve to be in the top 50 never mind the top 20. Is it because they give you a free French cake just after take off?

I wouldn't recommend using this list to decide which airline you're going to fly with.

Wierd. Even tripadvisor voting has Korean Air in top 10. wonder what the criteria is based on?

I will say ANAs Cabin staff was amazing. So thats accurate. But their coach seats have the least amount of room ever which is why i cant fly with them.

I love flying Qatar airways. I mean, as a tall dude flying is horrible, but the Qatar Airways planes are always nice.

(but maybe I'm biased because I dated several of their crew)
