An Iranian Para-cyclist has died after being involved in a crash during the men's C4-5 road race at the Paralympics.

The Iranian Paralympic Committee confirmed Bahman Golbarnezhad, 48, died after being admitted to intensive care in Rio following the incident on Saturday.

Golbarnezhad also competed at the London Paralympics in 2012.

Such sad news.

RIP

Update:

Iran's Paralympic Committee confirmed Bahman Golbarnezhad, 48, died after receiving treatment at the roadside and being rushed to hospital.

Golbarnezhad also competed at the London Paralympics in 2012.

Saturday's race began at Pontal and included the Grumari circuit used in the Rio Olympics road races.

The Vista Chinesa circuit - which included a treacherous descent where Annemiek van Vleuten of the Netherlands crashed and sustained concussion during the Olympics - was not part of the Paralympic course.

Golbarnezhad's death is the first in-competition fatality at a summer/winter Olympics or Paralympics since Danish cyclist Knud Enemark Jensen in the 100km team time trial at the 1960 Rome Games.

A statement by the Iranian Paralympic Committee read: "It is difficult for us to announce this sad news but, with immense regret, we have to say Sarafraz Bahman Golbarnezhad, Iranian cycling champion, has died after an accident while racing in competition in the 2016 Paralympics.

"He was an exemplary Paralympic sportsman who, with love and energy, tried his best to promote the name of Iran and to make all of us proud and at the end he gave his life for this.

"All members of the Iranian cultural and sports camp here express condolences to his family and the Iranian nation.

"The name of Bahman Golbarnezhad will be inscribed in the proud history of Iranian Paralympics."

Same course as in the regular Olympics one right?

EDIT: Oh, not that dangerous circuit apparently.

The first competitor that has died, but it isn't the first death. A blind spear thrower impaled a spectator.

Same course as in the regular Olympics one right?

I remember how we were thinking this track felt relatively safe because of the lack of falls at the start of the Olympics. Seems like all the descents were badly designed. Almost all of them had heavy falls with people hitting the borders and sustaining heavy injuries.

Absolutely tragic. Was really holding out for his survival... very sad. Thoughts to his family and companions in and out of the sporting world.

This really is a testament to the lengths these incredible athletes will go to when competing. The story of the runner from today/yesterday(?) that literally threw herself over the line to secure Bronze also comes to mind.

Holy crap! Today's real megaton is that more than two people can have the same first name.
RIP. They'll probably do a moment of silence or something during the closing ceremony tomorrow
