More an idle thought, but I had some thoughts about how to move Nintendo forward with the Wii U and this came to me;

1. Offload the gamepad stuff to an iApp, replace the boxed gamepad with the controller pro.

2. Add Virtual Console stuff to the iApp such as 2D Mario and Zelda. Free for hardware owners, 5 dollars for others with a voucher off their first eshop purchase.

2. Profit

That was it really. Any other ideas?

Make a slimmed down console box
Call it Wii U, but make the U front and center, and the Wii small.
Sell it for $199 and eat the loss.

The point of the controller is that the screen is very easily accessible with your thumbs and stylus. It won't happen, if they did get rid of the gamepad I would be shocked, it's the entire point of why the system is what it is.
