It's edgy as heck but a Survival Horror Tomb Raider game could have been a creative take on the series, + dual pistols and acrobatics and cool creepy creatures

The nu-Lara CD trilogy was straight trash, so I’d try anything that wasn’t that.

Awful games. I can’t wait for them to make an actual Tomb Raider game one day.

Terrible what’s happened to this series.

I mean, Montauk, "straight trash" they were not, they had great graphics, good atmosphere and the controls were really smooth.

Now, if you want to talk about the Uncharted-ification of it all with auto platforming, terrible plots (not that the OG games were Oscar worthy) and also the usual Ubisoft-ification with 17643784 OCD-inducing icons/collectibles on the map...yeah, you'd not be wrong.

Again, IMO, they weren't what you'd call "horrible", it's just that they chose to follow the same boring AAA tropes/fads that have been plaguing AAA gaming for the past 10+ years.

Cheers

Wow, yeah, great graphics - sure haven’t seen those before. I’ll be telling my friends about the incredible gameplay of, uh, graphics….for decades to come.

“Do you remember that bit when the graphics were good? Man, what a legendary level!”

No. the reboot trilogy was a good way to go, even though Shadow was disappointing, and I didn't care for the emphasis on combat vs exploration. But overall the first two were great.

"Shiny guns and a flair for gymnastics, you have me mixed up for someone else" just tells me no thanks.

Ascension teaser was the beginning of the rebooted Lara Croft where they wanted to go the "relatable" route to where Lara Croft was not Lara Croft anymore.

I totally would. I really appreciated the direction in tone that Tomb Raider 2013 went for.
Survival horror style.

I just didn't care for the other stuff. The torture porn, and trying to push the bow and arrow as "iconic" for Lara, when in gaming, she made double pistols cool to begin with.

I still find the bow and arrow era of Lara incredibly lame and bland.

Anyway, would totally be down for that one.

And I’m still wondering why they don’t focus on tombs and raiding them ? Or mysteries that hint at other worldly menace or ancient doomsday type devices

It’s called tomb raider for a reason and not ‘two guns fancy jumping’
technically she'd still be raiding tombs and from the looks of it those creatures shown in the videos would have been the or part of the "other worldly menace or ancient doomsday type device"

The concept art and early footage trailers make Lara look like a character model from Advent Rising. Not just her proportions, but also her movements.
It doesn't fit her at all.

I don't know if the game would be any good, but Lara should be visually appealing in any Tomb Raider game. She's not in this.

I played 2013 TR back in the day and remember being like, ah it's ok, it's a new thing not trying to be anything else. Definitely something to build on.

But shadow and rise are just such terrible games and I can't even tell you what it is that's so off putting. I think it's just the main character in general to start of with. Definitely games you wish you could mash the skip button.

And the gameplay loops were just, boring...

I watched my son play through 2 of the 3 CD Legend reboot series and even though I own all 3 of the Survivor series games I only made it part way through the first game. I think I only played through 2 of 3 Core trilogy games, but always had more fun with those than the newer ones because of the puzzle focus-the gunplay was trash. The survivor series offends me the most with the storyline. I can't stand the whining Lara in thoss games.

I don't think it would have been totally different to what they ended up making.
Looks very different from the final game, flamethrower, horse riding, non-human enemies/monsters, companion gameplay, Legend/Anniversary/Underworld moves. They could make an entirely separate game from just that scrapped content.

Flame propagation was in the game. Horse riding could easily just have been another QTE segment, as that is how they did things before and after. Stuff like, she didn't have a bow, they still used old animations, could easily have changed without a big change of direction. OK, there were "horror" themed enemies instead of Uncharted type enemies.

Flame propagation was only used for torch and fire arrows, horse riding could have been used for some more open sections as shown in the videos, not to mention the companion gameplay.

Problem with Tomb Raiding in Reboot Trilogy is they treated it as a throwaway optional activity along your streamlined path and usually was 1-3 puzzles and you were done. And for the most part in especially Rise they wanted you to beat the main game before even really allowing you to explore and do all the "Tombs" in the game.

The only one that was meaty enough was Baba Yaga DLC.

2013 was servicable since the game revolves around one big one the plot was centered around but even that felt secondary to "mah feelings mah struggles".

Bow and Arrow is pretty lame IMO. I think most thought after 2013 she would have used Dual Pistols after it's finale as a mainstay but nope Survivor Lara is all about Bow/Arrow and Pickaxes.

Yeah, I still found them fun but they basically turned it into a third person shooter. The biggest let down to me was how they dumbed down the traversal and puzzle challenges. The 360 era trilogy doesn't get enough love for blending in a better control scheme while maintaining some of the insanity of the traversal.

I'm probably good on this. I haven't really played many Tomb Raiders other than the main line game and the reboots. I wouldn't mind a new game in the vein of the reboots...or maybe a second reboot? UE5?

Yeah I play every new tombraider because I bought the first tombraider on PS1 and it blew my mind 🤷‍♂️

Also she runs backwards in this one so I can see her boobs more 🤪
