Famitsu releases sales figures for the top five PS4 launch titles in Japan

I don't think this can come as too much of a shock. Sony delayed the PS4 in order to line up a few Japanese-oriented titles for the system... and then released it late with none anyway. I cannot fathom what they were thinking, but I really feel for the Japanese fans who have a brand new PS4 with nothing they really want to play on it...

E3 shall save us. E3 shall save us all.

Wow, if the software attach rate was so bad, wouldn't it have made sense to delay the Japanese launch a little bit so the release lineup was a bit better? That way, you could ship those PS4 units to other places where they'd sell and maybe have a better attach rate.

Why are Japanese digital sales generally low? Is it because they often prefer to trade in their physical retail games ?

Top5 PS4 launch software numbers from Famitsu.

1. Knack - 322,083 (PS4 First Limited Pack bundles)
2. Ryu ga Gotoku Ishin - 73,086
3. Battlefield 4 - 26,878
4. Killzone Shadowfall - 25,978
5. Dynasty Warriors 8 Xtreme Legends - 13,576

Knack is only #1 because that's the total number of PS4 units sold in the launch weekend. I don't think the game is available separately yet since they're giving it away with every console sold right now. Attach rates in general seem pretty awful all things considered.

Look at the those KZ numbers. I guess Japan doesn't like shooters.

Knack is bundled for free with all consoles. Mario & MH were not
I know, I even posted so on the first page. Just kidding of course.

Still, I feel like it deserves to be counted, just as other bundled games do. Case in point, the Wii U holiday bundle with NSMB and Wii Party.

I'm also pretty sure it and the F2P FFXIV beta had an effect on overall software sales, as many people would first check out the free stuff they got, especially because there's no killer app yet.

Look at the those KZ numbers. I guess Japan doesn't like shooters.
Not sure where you're getting that from when BF4 and KZ are effectively #2 and #3 in retail PS4 software sales

So they bought the console to play...what exactly? FFXIV?

It's launch, they don't need a specific game to buy the console.
Everyone have Knack, some bought another game.
Except Killzone who is exclusive and Yakuza that was out the same day as the ps3 versione, all the other games were published on ps3 or vita before.
Pretty horrible line up.

There's launch lineups generally being something to avoid, and then there's this.

I was also hoping for a 100k Ishin debut. It'll get there later, but...=\

So we can conclude that releasing a game on both PS3 and PS4 means crippling the sales on the PS4 version (See Ryu Ga Gotoku: Ishin).

MGS (already not a big seller in Japan) will suffer the same fate on PS4.

The console needs marketable, exclusive content, and that's just not in the horizon right now :(

Yep, not surprising at all. It really is an absolutely pitiful software launch for the Japanese. The HW numbers are what really surprised me. Way higher than I thought they'd be.

Well, to be fair, If I were given a PS4 I would only be interested in playing Resogun. Do they get that with PS+ in Japan too?

Attn Japanese devs: Battlefield and Killzone are in the top 5 selling games for the PS4 launch in your country.

NSMBU was included in every bundle, but Wii Party U bundle was a choice among a few. We simply have no way of knowing(sales data wise) if Japan is interested in Knack.

The Japanese PS4 came with 3 month free PS+ pack-in too...
Just anecdotal evidence but Yodobashi camera at Akihabara had 10K and 5K yen PSN cards all sold out last Sunday (I've never seen pre-paid card being sold out, let alone PSN ones).

Knack is available separately.

I've seen it on shelves. Like here.

Not to say Knack isnt a deciding factor for some people but theres a difference between a launch bundle and a holiday bundle. People who wanted a PS4 would get Knack whether or not they wanted it, Wii Party/NSMB bundle came and boosted WiiU sales after weeks of mediocre ones showing that people actually wanted those games. But even without the bundle I think Knack would have debuted in the Top 5 over there, just on the lower end.

And I agree, when you get free stuff accompanying your purchase you kinda hold out. My friend didnt buy anything with his WiiU cause it came with Nintendoland. He probably would have bought something else had it not come with the game which could be the same situation here.

Knack user review rating from yodobashi. Using the power of google translate!

1 Star: Available on the bundled version. Too much to expect. Games only button roll proceed stage for children. There is only the contents of about 980 yen. What can be achieved in the PS3. I've been sad this is considered a soft launch representative of Japan. I think it's soft you do not buy the non-bundled.

Personally if I had gotten Knack bundled with my system I would be content enough to not buy another game for a few weeks. When I got my PS4 I bought Killzone and the combination of that with PS+ games (resogun & contrast at the time) and F2P games was more than enough to keep me happy for a while.

If I take away that perspective then yeah these sales are bad and I doubt digital purchases would add much.

Yakuza should definitely be higher, it looks like a really good game from all the japan PS4 twitch streams I've seen.

5th place is at 13,576. If Knack only sold 14K-25K copies,(between Killzone and Dynasty Warriors 8) we'd consider it a bomb.

3DS: 4.9%
WiiU: 8.5%

PS3: 5.2%
PSV: 11%

Pretty abysmal numbers all around, but it's pretty clear the Vita is the king when it comes to downloaded titles.

In another parallel universe, Final Fantasy XV, Dragon Quest XI, Kingdom Hearts 3, Persona 5, Tales of Zestiria, Valkyrie Profile 3, Shenmue 3, The Last Guardian, Legend of Dragoon 2, Half Life 3, Devil May Cry 5 were released as PS4 launch titles.

That's not a parallel universe, that's your ideal dream world.

Welp console gaming is fucked in Japan. Can't wait for Final Fantasy VII remake to be announced
for smartphones.
