Steamspy Data - No Man's Sky active players down over 90% in just 2 weeks

Aaaand we're done here. Business as usual, this shit ain't outside the norm.

Isn't it a bit outside the norm for this particular single-player game to be billed as this endless adventure of exploration? Are all single player games expected to give endless exploration....or just this one?

Enjoyed the reviews more than the game itself. Really amazing what Hello Games pulled off as far as just not talking about the game at length or giving out half truths.

Surprised how many people bit but its basically followed the path of every other PC survival clone.

This. The only ones that stuck around are H1Z1 and DayZ. Not because of the survival part but battle royal. This game follows the survival trajectory of being hotly anticipated and then nobody gives a shit about it two weeks later.

I'm know there's a whole spectrum of things people get out of games (and I know several people who have really enjoyed No Man's Sky), but there's something cathartic about seeing other people realizing that what's there isn't worth their free time.

It's not entertaining to me, and it's easy to make the case that the content simply isn't clever. Its design emphasizes mechanical repetition and disruptive maintenance tasks. The interface has some oddly archaic, if not just poorly implemented elements. I gave NMS more time and thought than I would any other game I can think of. I came in with a predisposition to enjoy it. It's one of the least enjoyable games I've played this generation. I hope it gets better over time with updates.

I'm simply not surprised. If the game was closer to what we saw in E3 demonstrations and trailers then I'm sure the player base would stay constant if not grow.

There's not much there to draw players back into playing NMS, and that's hurting them big time.

I'm interested to see refund numbers for this game.

There is zero depth to the game so I don't see a reason for people to stick around doing the same bullshit over and over.

The playerbase decline is also true on PS4 as well, I haven't seen another player in ages.

Nice one...

For me, I'm part of the 90% (on PS4). It's a nice, shallow game that I might return to but the multiple crashes/bugs on v1.03 didn't entice me to return.

This happens to a lot of games. Especially single player experiences. To be expected.

working in marketing has taught me this.

While it's normal for single player games to have a big dropoff once people play it, finish it, and uninstall it, a 90% in only what, a week and a half since it was released on pc? it's noticeable bigger player lose than average.

And that's not counting we aren't talking of a linear, short single player game that is played in 2-4 days, we are talking of a open world sandbox exploration/survival/crafting game. Those usually have longer legs.

You see pretty much everything there is to see in a few days, if that. Not surprising.

The flight mechanics are also about as basic as they come, dull dull dull.

Wouldn't this be the exact same stat for Uncharted 4? I played that and dropped it after 4 days.
I'm still playing No Mans sky and probably will now and then for a year as updates get added or I get in the mood. (playtime currently at 25 hours)

How is that any different than Elite Dangerous?

Elite at least has incredibly engaging combat going for it, not to mention great immersion into it's galaxy world. And there are a plethora of goals you can strive for in Elite to keep someone entertained and occupied. The Elite OT has recently been buzzing with new players coming from disappointment over NMS, it seems to be a common transition actually.

It basically feels like a game in early access that's sold for 60$.

Let's hope they add a fuckton of content through patches and updates in the near future.

I haven't seen anyone... EVER

You played something you didn't enjoy for 15 hours? Do you hate yourself?

I put in about 15 hours, enjoy the first 5-7. After that I was just grinding trying to upgrade my ship, and jump to the Center, without visiting other planet.

Near the end I gave up and spoiled myself buy reading what happens. I yes I truly do hate myself for wasting more than 5 hours on this game

NMS is basically an advert for Elite Dangerous.

This is DOOOOM's first two weeks(if I got the correct graph from steamDB):

Games drop. But they don't drop as bad as NMS.

Then again, DOOM actually has good word of mouth.

Yeah, Doom got a lot of boosting from people in that first week playing and realizing how fucking good it was when expectations were low.

Just in the interest of detail: has it actually dropped "over 90%"? The graph makes that look like a significant exaggeration.

Elite was far more disappointing for me than NMS, and I bought the $150 alpha with all expansions.

The way they are handling seasons and locking significant content behind huge paywalls when the base game is a literal grindfest disgusts me.

The actual flight model was good, but it really didn't feel like a game at all.

Still love to play it, but never thought it was worthy of being $60. Like Angry Joe said, maybe it should have been indie priced like $20 or something? Anyways, I'll be waiting for price drops before playing.

I'd imagine once the dupe glitch became well known it took a huge nose dive.

No need to grind or rush to the center if you can dupe your way there in a few hours.

My post from the other thread.

I recall this having a high opening, so taking a look.

The Friday(Aug 12th) it opened on, 212,321 Peak Players
The following Friday, 41,594 Peak Players(Highest for the weekend was 46k)\
So ~ 80% Drop in a week's time.
With its current average for the month is 60k Players. This will only get lower as the month goes on, but assuming it stays at 60k. Means it dropped 72%.

Compared to some of the other titles that opened big.
Fallout 4(Nov12th) opened with 471,995, Avg was 226,297. Drop 52%
Dark Souls III(April 12th) opened with 129,831, Avg 74,831 Drop 42%
GTA 5(April 14th) opened with 360,761, Avg 192,714. Drop 47%

So while it sold a ton to start. It's not retaining its player base(Might I add this is from Sunday, The monthly avg is only going to get lower.)

Fyi, right now it's out of the top 20 most played games.

This is very wrong.

Minecraft
Unturned
Ark
Rust
Terreria

Are all still top 20 played games. Each have been out for well over a year, Minecraft and Terreria for several. Many others still have solid playerbases and most have experienced some sort of growth before decay. NMS has been nothing but decay.

It took far too long for someone to actually post comparable data. Thanks.
