| 3.5 Quick Note about Formatting |
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If you want to suggest a game that has recently released or that looks interesting, but hasnt released yet, please follow the following formatting structure so the post is picked up by Toma-Bot:
Released games:
TITLE - PRICE (PLAT)
LINK
DESCRIPTION TEXT
Not yet released games:
TITLE - PLAT
LINK
DESCRIPTION TEXT
Copy the appropriate content and add the proper information for the black writing. Please only include 1 link and 1 image. I tried making it a bit failsafe, so it should be able to deal with 2 links or images as well, but 1 is safer.
If the game is free, then put "Free" as the price, otherwise please use $ or € for the price. You can also include more than one game per post (like the Screenshot saturday posts), but please stick to the above format for every entry.
If someone posts a non-proper formatted post, I'd appreciate if you could repost the game with the same info in the proper format.
I noticed there are a few noteworthy, and relatively unknown, projects that deserve a shoutout here because I feel that they share a common interest with the people in this thread. I talked to the guy from Pixabyte and MetaVendetta and both are very enthusiastic about the things they love and figured you might appreciate the shoutout as well. If you enjoy anything here or want to give feedback, let these guys know via their websites or also here in this thread. If you appreciate something, let people know. A heads up can sometimes very valuable.
To celebrate the start of the year, I'm spamming posting my most anticipated games for this year.
Most Anticipated
1. Miegakure ; the 4D game which got featured in an XKCD comic.
2. Gorogoa ; a puzzle-game in which the main mechanic consists in merging hand-drawn illustrations.
3. Ernesto RPG ; a game released by Daniel Benmergui, yes, it could exist!
4. The Council of Crows ; the next long-awaited game in the land of dreams, by the creators of The Sea Will Claim Everything.
5. Bomb Squad Academy ; think Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes in solo.
As for indie & non-indie games already listed on Steam, you might want to take a peek at the following games.
This was already posted in the Indie GOTY thread, sorry if you had already checked the games.
Seriously about time those finally release.
Still waiting on that "change picture order to adjust story line"-puzzle game as well, but by now it will probably never release.
Do you mean FRAMED? It is released but not on PC.
They are already working on FRAMED 2.
It had the same premise, but more in the pixel art style, I always tend to forget its name. But yeah, I would like to play Framed as well, they should port it to PC. :(
Shocking how much stuff I missed in 2016. I am making my goty list by scanning through all the old indie threads and their a second list forming of stuff I wish I played. A man can live for a thousand years and still never see more then 10% of the indie scene.
Thats probably still a high estimate, but yeah, I really want to be a bit more behind 2017 releases. Finished an application letter today, so hopefully I'll get to check out some January games tomorrow.
I'd been saving up a bunch of games/demos on my PC from the last couple months and just finally got around to playing around with them.
One really stood out, but digging through the old monthly threads I couldn't find it, so I'm not sure where I found it (Probably a random retweet from someone I follow on twitter). It came out in October. Maybe I missed it, but it's worth a mention regardless.
StickyBoy: The Curse of Oilytown - Free (PC)
sticky-boy.gif
https://isart-digital.itch.io/sticky-boy
You are Sticky Boy. When you activate your power, your body becomes floppy and your hands and feet become sticky.
It's a charming little 3D platformer. The main sticky hands and feet mechanic is somewhat reminiscent of Grow Home/Up but you can't use it to climb. You're always at the mercy of gravity and physics since you become a ragdoll. Clocking in at around 20-30 minutes, it's got clever gameplay, interesting level design, and a great art style! It was delightful and silly throughout! I'd definitely buy a full scale release.
Other than that, after a solid demo, I'm even more hyped for The Pedestrian.
11 minutes of SCALE gameplay and commentary from the latest Kickstarter update. Really clever stuff here and a cool look at the more architecturally-focused level design. Of all the post-Portal "weird gun/cool ability" first-person puzzlers, this is still the one I've most excited for.
Been excited for a long time. Actually wanted to include this in my most anticipated games for 2017 but when I looked I couldn't find an announcement that it was coming this year so left it off.
Same. Last year was my first full year in this job so I wasn't able to sit down and commit a bunch of times to indies. When I did play it was usually Rocket League/FIFA to relax.
I've picked up some stuff I missed though, so keen to crack on with year!
Wow, that looks awesome. I can't say for certain, but even if the puzzles are a little lackluster I could see myself enjoying that game anyway purely on the ongoing novelty of walking inside these shrinking and growing model environments.
Gave the latest build of The Great Whale Road a go and it is shaping up nicely. Some of the menus are a little clunky, especially in combat but overall it is quite enjoyable to run around with your tribe and do a bit of light roleplay and decision making. I think Sunburned (the devs) have the tone down nicely so if you have a general interest in the mid-to-late dark age Europe then it is a real solid game potentially. Should be out of early access by Feb or March acording to the devs.
Combat is a huge part of the game, right? Why do you think its still clunky?
It isn't actually that huge. You spend a majority of your time sorting out your settlement and trading and dealing with story events. Out of the two hours I spent with the game I got into less then eight fights and probably spent about 15-20 minutes overall in the combat menus. As for why it is still a little off, I can't say for certain although the team did alter the combat quite dramatically early December and I wonder if the buttons just haven't been fully optimised to deal with the new systems.
So, first up Astroneer.
I am a bit late to the party on this one already, but might as well chip in: Its a very interesting and athmospheric survivalcraft game with exploring a foreign planet and bits of technology that works very well as a sandbox. Its still in Alpha, so it hardly eases you in, but its very promising already. My biggest issue atm, is that it doesnt feel like the building/exploration has much purpose yet as it really needs some more content or added diversity, but they are still super early in development, so I am not too worried about it. Lovely game and its very easy to lose a few hours of your time to it even in its current state, but I'd probably recommend waiting until its a bit more fleshed out before buying.
Also, Indie devs of the world, for the sake of my sanity, please include button configuration options. Pressing z as main action button is not fun on european keyboards.
Standby - 7.99 (PC, Mac)
e439feca88d2d3557546f1dbfd5ecbe9ce8ccdae.gif
This game is really good. Its currently 15% off and I highly expect it to land in my voting list next month. Its a quick reaction platformer with devious level design and some cool ideas to mix up the platforming structure (like shooting barriers while sliding, or using angles to catapult yourself around multiple corners).
If you like high speed action platformers, its definitely a great pick.
I'm trying to recall a game which I saw here a long while back. It had an isometric perspective, involved 2d pixel art but did some pretty effects with colored lighting on the sprites themselves. The screenshot I saw was indoor, at night and there were some windows and other light sources. I remember someone commenting on that aspect. I can't recall exactly what the game involved, perhaps it was magic themed? Sorry if that's too vague, but I'm wondering if the game in question ever got released.
Hyper Ligth Drifter? Edit: Most likely not.
I tried Deios II // Deidia as well just now:
I love my glitchy puzzle exploration games, so I was super hyped when starting it... 2 hours later I still didnt really consider it fun and stopped. The game partially fulfills what it promises in the trailers/descriptions and I had some cool moments, that only these type of games are able to provide, where you feel like you need to step outside any boundary set by the game to invent your own path through. Lets start with an example of why these games are fun: There was a door locked behind a huge gate for which you need to click a shit ton of times to earn enough money. I didnt want to waste so much time doing that, so I tried to see if I can glitch myself through it with the glitch options. Those options tend to be very dangerous, as they move any level element and you typically get stuck or fall to death. In this case though, the floor was moving in a way to allow me to jump with good timing BELOW the barrier towards the door... only to reach the next level and fall to death permanently. Spawn, fall, spawn, fall. A different glitch command allowed me other shenanigans to randomly change the structure of the level and make progress that way. These elements honestly felt great and gave me the feeling of working through a challenge that others might not see/overcome/think about.
But the amount I was in that mindset was 5-10 minutes tops in a 2 hour time frame.
The game has tons to explore and many mysteries that arent clear upon first entering its realm, which is incredibly admirable and exactly the type of experience I wanted, but it does absolutely not make it fun to play. That starts with annoying navigation around certain objects, a monotonous level progression where 90% of the time you just walk left/right/jump to reach the next door in the first 2 hours, do not get any sort of progression or feeling of the world as most levels seem not very well designed, giving the whole affair a rather faceless attitude (with the exception of some standout levels), using a mechanic that has no point being in the game as its just annoying to navigate (jump pushing balls to certain places) and a mechanic reminiscent of flash games, where you wait for your money to increase, to buy more improvements to make more money, ad nauseum. I spent over 10-20 minutes just clicking to buy more of these machines.
I now reached a point where even if there is a clever meta commentary behind all that and redeeming qualities about later levels, I cant help but feel that its just not worth the time or money investment. It seems nowhere near being able to inspire any curiosity about gameplay and level design as Quasi did and does not come close to succeed in reaching the world building and puzzle design qualities of Starseed Pilgrim or Fjords.
Its maddening because I know that they are building up to more interesting uses of their glitch mechanics, which was hinted at quite heavily in some levels. Unfortunately cant recommend this, but its worth checking out in a cheaper sale for the interesting visuals and the above mentioned good parts if you have enough time.
