31 Days of Horror |OT| Watch a horror movie every day in October.

I cannot do the lists like some of you are doing. My mood changes all the time so I can't really "plan" on watching a movie on a certain day. If I find myself with time, I watch whatever I'm in the mood for!

#2 - Incident On and Off a Mountain Road (Masters of Horror, Season 1) (Oct 2)

masters-of-horror-4-incident-on-and-off-a-mountain-road-import.jpg

So this is the first movie featured in the Masters of Horror series. I'd describe it as a b horror movie and is about a woman that survives a car crash and then is being chased by a monster-like serial killer in the woods. I didn't expect much from it, but I was still disappointed by the overall quality. The story wasn't that good and I felt like it was missing creativity. I felt that the movie wasn't frightening and I didn't enjoy watching it, so I wouldn't really recommend it to anyone.

I hope the other Masters of Horror movies are better than this. I might read some reviews and pick up the best rated ones instead of going through the whole season.

Watch Out For Snakes! A movie made for the express purpose of lunching Arch Hall Jr. To superstardom, which didn't quite happen. It's a silly movie, with some decent music if you like surf punk. It's actually a take on the held hostage genre, just with a caveman. It features some really creepy behavior by Arch Hall Sr towards daughter (though in reality secretary) Marylin Manning while both are held hostage by Ricahrd Kiel who plays the titular caveman. Its very goofy, but kind of fun. It's a nice movie to watch while doing folding laundry. You're not going to be bored and you might have a good laugh too.

They really are, and I have 3 Ilsa movies to go!

Well if i remember correctly most of Dyanne Thorne nudity is in She Wolf of the SS but I haven't seen the Ilsa movies in a long time and I havent seen the Wicked Warden at all. Tigress Of The Siberia has my one of my favorite covers.

Yeah, I've already completely deviated from my list. But I'll probably get to them all at some point.

So I watched urban legend and it was amazing. DID NOT give myself a head start! Actually started late. Will give full post later, I even took notes.

#3 - Frankenstein (1931) (Oct 2)

Great movie. The last time I saw it I was too young to understand it as anything more than "scary monster kills people," so it was nice to watch it again now that I can see the beauty behind it.

1. Sleepaway Camp, 1983
What to say about such a monumental film. Taking the (tired?) formula of campers being butchered, this film has a mean and decidedly different streak usually not seen in the genre. It also has an incredible slice of weird put on top that cannot be described until certain plot points emerge. It really succeeds in the fact that what you're constantly looking for in the film (the who and what and why) is subverted by kids acting like actual kids and enough seventies flare to keep you laughing. The children actually talk like pre-teens, and it's so fun to hear their dialog back and forth. Homoerotica also enjoys a healthy presence and you'll never forget the final twenty minutes where things get really fucked up. Can't recommend enough.

In fact, watch it for free on YouTube, sanctioned by the makers of the film.

I thought we were cool Manos?

I've seen all the Korean flicks suggested so far.

#2 - Demons - October 2nd

You know how people say certain films are meant to be seen in a theater? Demons is one of those films because 90% of it takes place inside a theater. Along with the movie's theater you get the film trope/usual suspects that would fill one. We have the teenage couple making out, we have the black group that are being way too loud, we have the cranky old couple, even a blind guy who needs the movie within a movie explained to him every couple of minutes (what?).

It took me a little while to get into Demons? Not because it took too long to get to the titular Demons but I was distracted trying to figure out where this movie was supposed to be taking place. The movie is billed as Dario Argento's Demons so I thought I was watching an Italian film. Once the movie starts I notice all the actors speak English with American accidents but the signage and books are in a foreign language (maybe German) and none of the exterior shots look anything like the United States. All the confusion is forgiven once we are in the theatre and the proverbial shit hits the fan.

So can I recommend Demons? Well would you still like Evil Dead if it was missing the campiness of Bruce Campbell? Any interest in seeing Euro thugs (or is this Cleveland) snort coke out of a Coke can? What about a dude
riding a motorcycle through a theater full of demons, chopping them up with a samurai sword accompanied by some bitchin 80's metal?
(The soundtrack is very stellar. So 1985.)

Demons also features maybe the most convenient escape in the history of cinema that I won't spoil for you here. Also make sure you watch through the credits. Beware of Demon scratches kiddies....

So I forgot to post about the movie I watch on the 1st :\. Anyway:

October 1st - Dawn of The Dead
I'd never actually seen this one despite it being a zombie classic. The zombies were a bit silly at times and felt really dated. They just didn't seem menacing in any way to me. The characters weren't exactly the brightest at times, which was annoying. Overall I'd say I enjoyed the film but it definitely had it's flaws.

October 2nd - Pet Sematary
I remember the later half of this film vividly from my childhood. I enjoyed this film, but more for how much fun I had ripping on it. The main character's motivations were basically absent. I just couldn't see how he justified doing anything he did. The movie was quite creepy, however. I was quite disturbed by a couple scenes. Pascow is my hero.

Movie #2: Night of the Demon (1980) (dir. James C. Wasson)

There's another Night of the Demon from 1957, which is a surprisingly classy affair for a movie that has this as its monster:

curseofthedemon_05.jpg

I mention this because this Night of the Demon, one about a creatively violent Sasquatch (more on that in a bit), is not a classy affair. As a matter of fact, I actually wonder if his movie didn't start out as a made-for-TV project, due to the lack of effort in the acting, writing and cinematography departments. What saves the movie from being a complete waste of time is that the Bigfoot in this movie is colossal dick. He wreaks his havoc upon his hapless victims with such gusto and glee that it's hard not to root for him. For most people, the scene where he
rips off a guy's dick in full detail
is the money shot (har har), but my absolute favorite is
the girl scout scene
, which completely did not go in the direction I was expecting it to and was all the better for it. Also, this movie has a Bigfoot sex cult and a lengthy Bigfoot rape; let's see your crappy Boggy Creek movies pull that off!

Next movie: The inmates haven't been too happy with the treatment they've been getting, so they decide to confront their doctor about it...

Trying to keep up with this but I'm sure I'm going to have to bow out at some point since I have a new kid to take care of. I'm going to try to watch 31 movies I haven't seen before rather than take the easy route of watching something good I've already seen and hve on hand. That said, my first two movies this weekend were:

#1 - Abbott & Costello Meet Frankenstein (1948)

Figure I'd start off with something light, old, but fun. It was surprisingly less comedic and slapstick that I would have thought. Sure it has some element of comedy to it, but it was a lot more like a classic monster movie.

#2 - The Last Man on Earth (1964)

I simply saw Vincent Price was in it and said let's do this. I was actually surprised when I started to realize that this is I Am Legend. I wasn't aware that the book was made into a movie long before the Will Smith version. Really enjoyed this one despite some of the cheese of how action was done back then. Great ending too.

Omega Man with Charlston Heston is yet another theatrical take on I Am Legend. It's worth checking out IMO, especially if you enjoy the concept.

Making up yesterday and gonna steamroll the shitactular horror moviefest double feature right off the bat tonight to make it up.

#1 - Human Centipede - Defining the true meaning of friendship, ass to mouth, and my firm belief I won't be visiting Germany EVER!
Nah, I would.
I knew what I was getting myself into but damn, I felt a little queasy at times. The only thing I do like in the movie is the dude playing the mad doctor. Fucking spot on but the whole premise of the movie...........meh.

I had to watch this movie cause it was stuck in the back of my head for months now but wanted to reserve watching it til the Halloween season comes around. So I'd just finish watching it and gonna go right ahead and combo the shitness movie nite with Troll 2.

lolololololololol, wtf am I doing to myself????

#1: Sleepaway Camp
I found it to be quite a funny movie, so less of a horror and more of a comedy to me. I loves Angela's stare and that twist was...different.
EDIT: I'd like to be involved with this 31 days of horror. I'll watch two tomorrow, so I can be caught up.
that is if its not to late :/

They're eating her...and then they're going to eat me...OH MY GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD

I have fond memories of that movie. Was at my grandmother's really early in the morning before school, and saw it was premiering later that day on Cinemax around Noon. It looked so cool, that I faked being sick and had my grandmother pick me up from school before it aired. I was 9 or 10, so I was completely oblivious to how bad it was, and was creeped out by it.

The books are great, its a great intro to Trashy flicks and alot of cool movie facts. Just to warn you the Bougieman's drawings are....alittle out there. Still I definitely recommend them. The new Cinema Sewer is coming out this month...if you preorder from him he does a sketch for you.

I just ordered the first volume. Should have it but Monday or Tuesday, thanks for bringing them to my attention. The cover for the upcoming 3rd book is awesome. That'd make a killer movie.

#1 House of the Devil- I loved this. Can't say I'm shocked to find it's love/hate on the internet, given it's slow pace. That being said, this is definitely one of the more tense movies I've ever seen. I thought towards the end, things started getting a bit out of hand, but it still handled it pretty well. Also recreates the 80s horror/slasher feel perfectly. Good start to the list :) 8.5/10

I thought House of the Devil would be something I'd absolutely love. I love 80s horror and oldschool slow-burn type movies so the slow pace complaints didn't worry me at all. The problem with slow-burn movies though, is the payoff has to make the wait worth it, and I didn't feel it even came close. I was very disappointed, but they did really capture the 80s look. The main character even had the same walkman my sister had back in the day.

Too late to sign up? I have a lot of horror movies on my to watch list, I've seen very little throughout my life, most of them on tv as a kid/teen. So this should be fun. Although there's no way I'll be able to watch a movie every day, I'll just watch 2-3 a week maybe.

Never too late, go for it. If you can't do the full 31 that's fine. Just do whatever you can handle.

This movie was too intense for me to finish as an eleven year old. D:

Went back and watched it much later on and it was far less traumatic.

2. The Thing (1982)
I've seen this so many times, and it is one of very few films that delivers every viewing. It was really fun because I watched it with a group who were watching it for the first, and what always strikes me is the superb use of tension and dread. It's almost claustrophobic and cold by the scenery and setting alone, who would have thought the scripting and sequencing could be just as effective and tightly-wound. Excellent film that transcends genre expectations and norms.... Everything works in this movie. Everything.

#2 - Demons - October 2nd
Great write up, it's always interesting to see others reactions to it. Yes, it is extremely varied in whatever-the-fuck-the-setting is supposed to be. It's like 80's America through Eurovision mixed with trash/metal aesthetic... If that means anything at all. Muddled is probably the best word. Demons 2 takes the same cinematography to another level of b-grade shadows and hallways. I'll be watching it again later this month.

Two words: corn seduction.

I'm modifying my list to include Brian Yuzna's Society, because it's rare and people speak so highly of it. I enjoyed From Beyond and ADORE Re-Animator, so I've got some decent expectations.

#1 Dead Heat (Oct 1)

Okay, so I started with a rewatch, but it's been over 5 years since I've originally seen it and I just got the new blu-ray so I wanted to check it out.

The movie itself is still a lot of fun. Lots of cheesy 80s one-liners ("Sorry to interrupt your erection.") and some pretty cool oldschool effects shots, though I can see why it's not as popular as other horror comedies such as Evil Dead 2, Return of the Living Dead and Re-Animator. It just isn't as re-watchable. The re-animated Chinese restaurant is still as awesome as always though.

02_Torso.jpg

#2 Torso/I corpi presentano tracce di violenza carnale (Oct 2)

I had this recommended to me a few years ago when I first discovered Dario Argento's giallos, but I never got a hold of it until now thanks to Blue Underground's fantastic new blu-ray. It was definitely worth the wait. While I don't think it's as strong as Tenebre or Deep Red, it's still a fantastic thriller with a cool premise and a fantastic final act. Technically it's very impressive too. It's beautifully shot (with a lot of beautiful things to look at...) and while there doesn't seem to be a lot of score, what there is is effective.

I only had 2 real issues with the film. First, there's a few gore effect shots that used horrible looking dummies that really pulls you out of moment (that's nothing new for movies of this type though) and the (ending spoiler)
character of the killer really should have been fleshed out more. It was almost confusing simply because so little screen time was given to him before the reveal. I don't even think his name was spoken until the final line of the movie
. Overall though, excellent movie.

#2 | Dagon | via Netflix streaming

02_Dagon.jpg

In the first 10 minutes I could tell two things: the budget was low, and I wanted all of the actors to get eaten, or something.

I bucket horror movies into two general groups, whittling, and gauntlets. Last night's film (Scarecrows) was a whittler, where we start with a larger ensemble that is whittled down as the movie progresses. Dagon is a gauntlet, where we have 1-2 leads and they are put through the wringer.

I was impressed by how utterly screwed the lead was from the get-go, and how long they were able to draw out his flight from point A to point B. As with most in the genre, the lead made a huge host of idiotic decisions (no, you shouldn't head into that house, that didn't work out well the first time, did it?) of the "yell at the screen" variety.

The short version of the plot is that a couple crashes while vacationing off the coast of a tiny Spanish town, only to find they worship the sea god Dagon, which is bad news all around.

It has a great sense of hopelessness and dread, some mystery, some fine boobs, decent creature effects (horrible scant CG aside) and all in all is worth watching. I think the film erred in filleting in most horrific fashion the one sympathetic, likable character in the movie, but that particular method of death is one I'm averse to.

The ending was not what I was expecting, and came as a pleasant surprise. Recommended overall.

I'm gonna treat myself (which I fucking deserve!) and watch A Tale of Two Sisters next night.

#2. House of the Devil

I had already watched this when it came out and loved it, but watching it again reminded me of how well done it is. It builds up so much tension through out the whole thing and the end is crazy, yet awesome. Also, no cheap jump scare at the end which is always a plus in my book (even though the whole time watching it for the time, I expected something to happen and made me tense)

Final Grade: A-

Whoops, didn't see the new OP rules. Here goes:

Oct. 2 - Rocky Horror Picture Show

Thoughts: Believe it or not, this is the first time I've ever actually fully watched it. UK version from the bluray released a year back. As someone who isn't even a fan of musicals, this really is a classic.
What does it have to do with Horror? Well it's not a horror film but it is indeed a homage of B-horror and such from the 30s, 40s, 50, etc.
Also, it was something my wife and I could agree on as she watches it once a year anyway.

Also, someone wanna help me fill out my list?

3. Lost Boys
4. City of the Living Dead (haven't seen)
5. Susperia (haven't seen)
6. Land of the Dead
7. Day of the Dead.
8. Dawn of the Dead

13. Army of Darkness
14. Phantasm (haven't seen)
15. REC 2 (haven't seen)

Keep in mind, these aren't the actual order, just what I have right now.

Alright I watched:

Prince of Darkness
Tales from the Crypt: Demon Knight

I enjoyed Demon Knight more. Prince of darkenss was too slow and the ending really lame.

Edit:

I also watched Cat People (the 80s version). Was bored to tears. Wouldn't even call it a horror movie.
