31 Days of Horror |OT| Watch a horror movie every day in October.

#16 - Teeth -This movie made my penis very uncomfortable at times. Especially when the dog is chewing some guys dick after it was bitten off by the vagina.

I finally watched Christine!

#5 Christine Surprisingly I liked it a lot! The premise of the movie sounded a bit goofy and Carpenters They Live! left me a bit underwhelmed.
But it was very solid both in its direction/cinematography and its characters. Some special effects were quite impressive.
The burning car for example or the 'reconstruction' of the car. One of the better Carpenters.

#6 Blood Shower I was at the cinema yesterday. They show a cheap b/c/d-horror movie every friday with no entrance fee. This week's showing was Blood Shower, a very bad slasher from chile. The premise is, that a middle aged mother to be wants to get her child with the assistance of a female sect leader. The sect leader then starts to murder all of her friends. This film is very bad. Not funny bad, just bad. A mixture of boring and bad effects badly cut together.

#32 Nomads (1986) - Oct. 22
~ An excellent and sorely overlooked supernatural thriller from the '80s featuring Pierce Brosnan is a French Anthropoligist who falls into the company of Einewat - nomadic spirits said to haunt places of tragedy - in LA... Co-starring Adam Ant as the leader of the titular demons and Leslie-Anne Down as an ER doctor haunted by Brosnan's past, this movie suffers less than most from that era of '80s style overload, has a cool guitar soundtrack by Ted Nugent and an ending that will haunt you for days...

#21 The Ward (Oct 22)
z92R6.png

John Carpenter's newest feature film, The Ward, is basically a ghost story set in a mental institution. It's pretty decent, most of the scares come in the way of building tension and then BAM OMG WTF kind of moments. It's also an interesting blend of semi-gory horror and a psychological thriller. The film works pretty well, and overall I found it enjoyable. The cast does a decent job, even though they are all way too pretty and well kept to be what you'd expect from a lockdown mental ward.
Kind of a big spoiler, plot wise, for both this and another movie, so read at your own risk.
Was kind of let down that this is basically a horror version of Shutter Island
All in all though, it's shot well, has decent dialogue and actors, and has a pretty good plot. Like I said though, it kind of blends light gore with psychological, kind of in a similar way that The Ring does (a bit more gory on this one though) and that left me wanting more in either direction.

Someone recommended this to me recently; Told me very briefly what it was about and then added that the movie had a big
twist ending
. By then I already knew what it was :/

Time for In The Mouth of Madness, watching it based solely on GAF recommendations!

I watched house of the devil yesterday. I really really liked it, the attention to detail was brilliant. However, I thought it was only half way over when it ended. I was ready for another hour.

#19 - Paranormal Entity (2009)

It really is just a rip off of Paranormal Activity except with nudity and underwear shots. Sometimes you feel it's trying to hard, but it's not all that different in the end.

Still got 3 more to catch up.

#22 - In the Mouth of Madness (Oct 22)
An insurance investigator begins discovering that the impact a horror writer's books have on his fans is more than inspirational. Surprisingly fun! I was a little skeptic, but the GAF recommendation holds up. I mean, Sam Neill is just awesome. It was just as silly as it was scary, I really enjoyed this. 7/10

Movie #22: Dagon (dir. Stuart Gordon)

I love a film that hits the ground running, and Dagon certainly does not waste anytime getting to it. Horror films this briskly paced are a rare breed, and outside of an unfortunate plot dump at the halfway point, Dagon never lets up for anyone. Despite this, it's a remarkably atmospheric film, made all the more impressive due its small budget. Stuart Gordon can definitely stretch a dollar pretty damn far. A very nice surprise all around.

Next movies: The plural is not a mistake! We take on two shorter features for tomorrow night. In keeping with Dagon, we first take a look at a modern silent film inspired by Lovecraft's most famous creation. As our follow-up feature, we flip the table a bit by watching a film that inspired that most famous of all sci-fi horror creations...

#33 Creature From The Black Lagoon (1954) - Oct. 22
~ Jack Arnold has said that Creature From The Black Lagoon and it's sequel Revenge of the Creature were written as 50's riffs on King Kong, and it's easy enough to see the parallels, but whatever its inspiration, CFTBL is a classic all its own! Great photography on land and under water, a fantastic creature suit, powerful score and action-packed script help keep this one in frequent rotation at my house... Both thumbs up!

#20 - The Crazies (2009)

I've always heard about this one being pretty good but really didn't know much about it. I actually thought it was going to be more like The Hills Have Eyes (which I thought was terrible). This movie sorta felt like not a lot happened for an outbreak movie. I'm not sure hat it is exactly but it felt a bit empty and uneventful. I didn't hate it or anything, but it was just sorta there.

#22 Halloween (1978) (Oct 22)

"He came home."

Rewatch. Halloween is one of those movies I saw various sequels here and there out of order growing up, but I had never seen the first 2 until a few years ago (probably about 5 years ago for H1). When I initially saw Halloween, I went in with unfair expectations based on the film's legendary status in the horror community. I did enjoy it and appreciated what it did for slashers, but I wouldn't say I was blown away by it.

Since there's a couple of them out of blu-ray now, I decided to start collecting the series as it's released in HD. Thankfully, now I got to go into Halloween without any crazy expectations and got to appreciate the movie based on its own merits, not its legend. And you know what? It is an excellent movie.

There's a few things here and there that I still think are a little goofy and drag it down a bit (mainly the hammy performances given during
Annie and Lynda's deaths
) but that's really just me being overly critical because Halloween is the blueprint for modern slashers. If the issues I had in the film were in any of its imitators I probably wouldn't even notice.

Now if someone would just release Halloween 3-5 on Blu-ray I could complete my set.

10. Night of the Demons (1988) - October 22

A cheesy 80s horror movie. But a good one. Pretty tense, with a lot of comedy. The funniest scene was
when the chick put the lipstick in her tit

7/10

Time to make a quick update, too tired to search for pictures for my films, so I'll make a quick review. Netflix slated both of these films as horror, but I didn't find them scary, but hey, Netflix considered them to be of the horror genre.

#6 Red State. October 22.

I didn't know Kevin Smith made another film after his abysmal film in 2010 (or was it in 2009?). This was a really good return to solid filmmaking. This film was surely a Kevin Smith film, the dialogue and theme ringed truly for this solid director. There were a lot of surprises. This film was generally good, but I don't get why Netflix considered it as a horror. Maybe religion is really scary.

Score: 4/5.

#7 Paranormal Activity 2. October 22

I don't understand why Netflix slated this comedy as a horror film, but whatever. The first was actually pretty funny (especially in hindsight). The ending made me burst into tears of laughter. All the "scary" parts were not scary, they were funny. Anyway, a comedy attempting to be a horror film. A failed "rip-off" of the Blair Witch Project.

Score: 2/5.

#22 - New Year's Evil - October 22nd

new-years-evil-movie-poster-1981-1010247770.jpg

Another bad holiday themed slasher. The gimmick in this one is that the killer is stalking a punk rock TV show host (these shows were all the rage in 1980 appearantly) and he aims to kill someone that she knows every hour it strikes midnight starting with EST and ending with her murder in midnight in L.A.

It doesn't work for a lot of reasons but the main one is that you don't care about the star of the movie, Roz Kelly - TVs Leather Tuscadero (the Fonz doesn't show up), because she is such an awful person. She cares about no one but herself and her career. This plays out in the early scenes with her son who seems to have some issues of his own. The son is played by Grant Cramer who was also in the 30th anniversary scenes of Night of the Living Dead and Killer Klowns From Outer Space, so you know he's hitting the horror fest circuts.

The only saving graces in this film are the soundtrack (the theme was so awesome they played it three times) and a different take on the slasher genre, you see the killer the whole movie no POV bullshit. There is even a third act twist I didn't see coming but I merely greeted it with a shrug. Skip this one unless you are really into early 80's punk rock or want to see a woman get suffocated with a bag of weed.

#18 - A Nightmare on Elm Street Part 3: Dream Warriors

nightmare_on_elm_street_three-tf.orf-1.jpg

The third movie of Nightmare on Elm Street series was much more relevant and had ties to the first movie, so it made me wonder why this wasn't part 2 in the first place. As I did with part 2, I also find part 3 to be lacking compared to the first one. I believe the whole concept of the characters using their superpowers in their sleep to fight Freddy was quite lame.

#23 - The Brood - October 23rd

Brood_poster.jpg

Where's Gangrel?

Wow! I don't remember the last time I saw a movie and it went from "so-so" to "brilliant" during the last 15 minutes like this does. A lot of slow parts in the middle of this one but the payoff is so worth it. It's everthing you would want out of a Cronenberg movie. Besides the final minutes I also really enjoyed the Kindergarden class scene and the drunk grandma.

Like I mentioned it drags a little in the middle of the film and there are some HEAVY acting scenes. Acting with a capital A. Not that the performances are good or bad it's just heavy material, therapy sessions talking about emotional trauma and what not. It anchored the movie down for a little while but you needed it to get that excellent climax. This Cronenberg guy knows what he's doing. Check it out.

quick weekend update

21# Zombi 4:After Death 80s italian zombie flick pretty run of the mill boring stuff
22# Attack The Block great little brit alien invasion flick involving youths/hoodies

#23 - Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari AKA The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (Oct 23)
Dr. Caligari's and his somnambulist Cesare roll into town, right about the time when disturbing crimes are happening. This movie has distorted sets, powerful imagery, great visuals accompanied by strong storytelling and good performances. However, I didn't care much for the shredding guitars, or the music in general at all. The ending was great and this movie was very much ahead of it's time. 7/10

22. Saw (2004)

Rewatch!

I love the Saw series, and this started everythign off and after re-watching it, I can safely say this still holds up today and is by far the best movie of the series. It is a shame that after the second Saw film, the quality of the films went down the shitter. This film is the embodiment of torture horror genre, great characters with great premises and the almighty twist at the end is still great. What makes this stand out more than the other Saw series is how it lays down some personal moral issues really well, while the other Saw films (especially the latter ones) had moral messages but concentrated more so on a boring killer plot which loses what made this Saw the best. I will probably never be bored -rewatching this again and again, one of the best modern horrors! 9/10

(day 23) Dark Water (2002) - A mother is struggling with a divorce and custody battle over her young daughter. After moving into a new apartment, the mother quickly notices that things are off. Water is leaking all over the place and her daughter talks about an imaginary friend. Rather predictably, that imaginary friend is the ghost of a little girl who lived in the apartment upstairs and who had drowned in the water tank of the building. For reasons that I don't quite grasp, this ghost is very malevolent and has the power to make all the water faucets and such go crazy. Frankly I couldn't find anything to like about this film. It fails as a horror film because there's nothing to be scared about; the evil black-haired ghost girl is so dreadfully cliché, the special effects range from CG to ugly make-up and the "tense" scenes are all predictable. It also fails as a drama since the custody battle is relegated to the background and becomes less and less important as the film goes on. Frankly I regret not watching the American remake. Even though I hear it's worse, at least I could've been staring at Jennifer Connelly for an hour and a half. 1 out of 4 stars, dull.

I watched the extended edition on blu-ray. I've seen it so many times that I am completely desensitized to it, but I absolutely love it. The behind the scenes stuff was really cool, especially the on-set issues including cast injuries.

today.

#18..House of Horrors..great movie with a fantastic Martin Kosleck as a sculptor who has issues with his critics, he then befriends an equally wonderful Rondo Hatton(as the Creeper), who likes to snap people's backs, thus no more bad reviews from critics, until..

#19 - Zombie (Zombi 2)

l_80057_ed256c66.jpg

To be honest, I found Zombie to be quite boring untill the last scenes. I would only recommend this movie if you're a fan of zombie flicks.

2/5

CREATURE DOUBLE FEATURE!!!

Movie #23: The Call of Cthulhu (dir. Andrew Leman

Gimmicky, but you can tell it was made with a lot of love. It's a shame that the budget necessitated the filmmakers to rely on digital video, as it gives the entire production a really cheap look to it, because they were definitely working well within the constraints of the era that they were depicting. Surprisingly jam packed for 47 minutes, too.

Movie #24: It! The Terror from Beyond Space dir. Edward L. Cahn

A very, very silly film, but it's hard not to see what it helped inspire. You'd almost mistake it for an anti-Mars film by the end of it, which is an amusing concept in of itself. I was actually really surprised by the way they ended up dealing with the creature (after so many hilarious attempts); despite the extreme similarities to that other movie, it actually was a novel way of killing the bastard. Impractical as all hell, but it worked all the same.

Next movie: After a disappointing showing early on in the marathon, Argento gets a chance to redeem himself with what many people still hold as being his best giallo, if not his best film, period.

Is anyone else running out of steam like I am? I couldn't bring myself to watch anything today so I'll have to double up tomorrow. It'll be nice when I can get back to watching movies that don't have people being murdered left and right.

I guess I just need to decide on some really good stuff to watch to get me back in the mood.

It happened to me several times, thats why I am a couple of movies back. This happened to me especially after watching several bad/mediocre movies in a row.

Almost caught up. Should hopefully be caught up by tomorrow.

#21 - The Ward (2010)

This was a pleasant surprise and I only caught wind of it because of a previous post here. I liked how it ended too even though I feel like I've seen this movie before in other forms.

#22 - Carriers (2009)

This one I just stumbled upon and it surprisingly had a bunch of people I recognized. It had the new Captain Kirk, Piper Perabo of Coyote Ugly fame, and the main chick from Revenge. I really like how this one played out too. It felt reasonably realistic on how such a scenario would play out. Nice surprise find for me.

Basketcase2.jpg

Oct. 22 - Basket Case 2
Don't know how I feel about this one. Pretty indifferent and unimpressed to be honest. It tries to go for quantity over quality by adding a bunch of freaks, more characters, more subplots, etc. The story and specifically the intergration of the freaks though seems likes just an excuse to keep the makeup deparment entertained. All of it really takes away from the core bits between Belial and his brother, which were the best parts of the first one. Speaking of which, this Belial is alot more lame then his prior incarnation. No trademark beserk yells, a worse creature design, and mostly him not doing much at all. The love scene at the end is still pretty funny though.
You only get one real freakish death towards the end, other than that, it's all surprisingly tame.
So yeah, hopefully Part 3 fairs better

Oct. 22 - The Evil Dead

Holy fucking shit. If you forgot how much of a bad ass Raimi was, this will easily convince all over again. Recently bought the bluray and hadn't seen this in quite a bit of years, so it was all relatively fresh.
What else is there to say. It's a classic. So many slick camera angles, tricks, sound effects, etc. Really fires on all cylinders as teh saying goes and can't think of anything quite like it around the time of it's release. Certainly makes other films look pretty damn tame in comparison

STILL LOVE LOVE LOVE IT!

For me it's really that I share a TV, so yeah, Mrs doesn't wanna watch a horror movie every damn night, hence I skip some. Like last night I watched Xmen: First Class (fantastic movie!)

Also yeah, watching mediocare movies will take the wind out of your sails, but watching a great one will easily give yah a boost!

#24 - Dracula (Oct 24)
The vampire comes to England to seduce a visitor's fiancée and inflict havoc in the foreign land. Pretty fun. Almost so much fun it seems like a parody. Production values are high, the acting is great (sans Keanu Reeves) and it was very entertaining yet uneven. 6/10

#24 - Husk - October 24th

220px-Husk.jpg

Written and directed by Brett Simmons who deserves some credit for putting together a nice little film and for finally giving me some scary scarecrows! Much better than "Scarecrows" but still a B movie, serviceable but a B movie none the less. Good story besides a few illogical misteps, mostly by the character that looks like Dexter and Johnny Rico had a baby. The character development is non-existetent but they get to the story quickly and it is directed competently. The plot puts the viewer in the "how would you escape" thought process
I WOULD HAVE TAKEN A LIGHTER TO THAT CORN FIELD MYSELF A LOT SOONER BUT WHO AM I TO JUDGE.
You learn the rules of this farmhouse world as you go along and the story takes it time unveiling the backstory while doing a pretty good job of showing how the monsters came to be. There's even a few legit scares scattered throughout the movie.

#7 Re-Animator
15hbu61.jpg

I loved it! A movie in the vain of Evil Dead 2, if I may compare the two. They come from the same era, both have great effects and direction, both have a dark, twisted sense of humor.
I saw the third one, when it came out and always wanted to watch the original. Glad I did, because it delivered in every sense possible.
I understand why the movie was 'indiziert' in germany. The way the german version had to be cut makes very little sense overall,
almost every scene with gore in it had the original english dub.

How is Bride of the Re-Animator? Worth a watch?

LOL - what PD budget release were you watching? I have the KINO restoration, and there aren't any electric guitars on that soundtrack...

I could watch Jennifer Connelly reading a phone book for an hour and a half. In fact, I'd buy the DVD and re-watch it often...

#22 Repo! The Genetic Opera (Oct 23)
aOGOy.png

I really enjoyed this, despite the critical reception. The general plot is, somewhere in the future we have an epidemic of organ failure, and in comes a company can make artificial organs, for which they charge high prices, but let you buy them on credit. However, if you miss a payment they repossess them by any means necessary (they rip them out of you).

Also, people have become addicted to surgery, and there's a drug manufactured from the brains of corpses that eases their pain. In comes the graverobber/drug dealer.

So, that's the set up, and then there's a huge complex story of twists and turns like you'd expect from an Opera. And it's a musical obviously, but mostly like industrial music. It's a pretty fun ride, definitely something fresh in a long line of generic slashers and whatnot that Hollywood has been pumping out.

If the plot sounds familiar, you're probably thinking of the big budget Repo Men, which some argue is stole the concept of organ repossession from this film. As far as I know, that's where their similarities end.

All in all though, I enjoyed it. It's definitely not for everyone though, so if a goth/industrial influenced sci-fi horror musical doesn't sound appealing to you, you probably won't like this. 8/10

Checking quickly on-line, I see it has TWO soundtracks... guess I always selected the orchestral one... I've never been one for these "contemporary" soundtracks with classic films... I don't like the rock soundtracks you hear on a lot of the PD Nosferatu DVDs either...

(day 24) The Host - A fish/lizard monster crawls (or should I say, jumps) out of the Han river in South-Korea and starts to terrorize the surrounding area. A girl gets taken away to the monster's lair in the sewers and her family sets out to find her, defying the government-imposed quarantine (supposedly the monster is the carrier of a lethal virus) and subsequently gets chased by the police and military. I was shocked at how many themes this film adeptly handles without breaking atmosphere or pacing. You've got family drama, you've got criticisms on the government and how they handle civilians, you've got the international community/the USA meddling in South-Korea's affairs with no regard for its people, you've got social commentary on unemployment and poverty and even with all that, it manages to be a fantastic monster movie with some genuine thrills and scares. Top that off with a great soundtrack and decent visual effects. The result is a magnificent film that can't really be classified as belonging to one genre and doesn't fail in any of the genres that it could be considered as. I was planning to reserve my top scores for the last seven days, when I would re-watch some of my all-time favourite horror films. But The Host deserves the praise. 4 out of 4 stars, excellent.

Yeah, The Host is really quite something. The initial monster attack fucking blew me away because it's so soon and just so well done and sorta realistic.

I've only scene it once and should watch it again.
