The name is supposed to be (spoilers for later in the game)
something that a bunch of 8-year-old kids came up with that's reminiscent of tokusatsu shows like the Featherman masks they all wore. "Masquerade" doesn't quite fit that bill as much as "Masked Circle." There is more to localization decisions than "what did the fan translation do," you realize.

I realize that, and I've known that for a while, but Masquerade is iconic. It was used by fan sites and the Oracle of Maiya script long before the fan translation.

That said, it's a minor nitpick. Everything else is vastly superior, especially Michel(thank god).

Ok, but my point stands. "It's iconic" is not an argument that trumps "it serves the story."

I would most certainly not find it hard to blame them! I bet Nich and them would never hear the end of it either from the crazy-ass Atlus fanbase. If Raidou 2 made it, if the freaking G______R games made it, EP needs to make it. Megaten takes priority, I'll stoke the outrage with a G______R blamewar myself if I have to!

You cannot even begin to compare the PS2 at the end of its life to the PSP as it is now. Don't be silly.

PS2 did get a Sakura Wars game, PSP gets Growlanser IV.

Pretty similar megatons late in their life. (I pray GIV receives a better fate.)

I'm talking about stoking blamewars, of course I'm being silly. Raidou 2's just in there as the last time I can remember a Megaten localization being somewhat iffy.

I'll play armchair analyst and state that I'm sure Atlus USA is aware that leaving behind a mainline Persona game, even on a dead-ass system, would damage the brand here and cause a lot of nerdrage. It'll make it out here one way or another, even if it takes content cuts or a digital only release.

Sector D, “Delphinus.” The dolphin constellation, as Zelenin points out. Somehow I don’t think the name is particularly apropos. How about, I don't know, "Dump"?

Our mission, Arthur reminds us, is to locate the quantum tunnel and find the “Vanishing Point” contained with it--the point linking the Schwarzwelt to the outside world. It could be our ticket out of here... assuming we can find it. But before I can get too worried about our prospects, there’s a call from Zoe, our tireless medic. Something’s missing from sickbay... and I have a funny feeling about what it is...

FtWmZ.png
dptVl.png
d0nOw.png

No, J, the other Commander Gore. Well, this is pretty crappy. Could demons have taken the Commander’s body? There’s no way they could have made it onto the ship undetected, though. We can’t stall the main mission to look for the body, so I guess all we can do is just... keep an eye out for it?

QmnEq.png
3mnbl.png

This place is pretty dreary and disgusting. I wander around, stepping in pools of sludge and fending off a new cohort of demons, when I get a call from Zelenin.

ZIkhX.png
IB0AT.png
6Taj5.png

She can’t deal with all these demons since she still only has the Power that Mastema gave her earlier. Sigh. Fine, I’ll do it. After they’re dealt with, Z wonders why we haven’t been able to detect any trace of the Rosetta... normally by this point we’d at least have a general idea of where it is. Then she says she has something she wants to try, so I escort her to a suitable location.

jSbKb.png

Of course! Why didn’t we try combining our detection strength sooner? Unfortunately, her plan doesn’t work.

Bugaboo comes running up to the two of us... what happened, little guy? What? Jimenez fell down the well?!

WfgXL.png
U3eFZ.png

It hurt itself in its confusion! Jimenez is obviously unwell. He has a moment of lucidity and tells us to run, just before he starts flipping out again. What’s going on here?

CO28f.png

Yeah thanks Arthur, I have eyes. (I don’t think I’ve ever seen the word “consciousnesses,” plural, written out before. It feels very strange to me.)

UeSaZ.png

This is pretty bad. What’s worse is that Zoe can’t find anything medically wrong with any of the affected crew members. For lack of a better term, she settles on the big C: it’s a curse!

ETlrp.png

Zelenin points out that this could be an extension of something we encountered already... namely, the crew who went nuts back in Bootes.

yDlwT.png
Z3GWl.png

Here’s hoping we find something there to help us out... lest we come back from the palace and no longer have a crew.

It's kind of lame how Yuzu is the only person whose e-mails look like they were written by an idiot in Devil Survivor. Everyone else's are normal, well-formed language.

Danny Dudekisser

I paid good money for this Dynex!

Digital only would be pretty disappointing, simply because I've got the physical version of IS. I'd feel like an idiot if someone was like "where's EP, noob" and I point to my PS1 copy, and then they're like "no, fuckhead, on PSP." And then I have to be like "well... it's saved on my PSP." I'd rather die than go through that!

Though, I still haven't played through Innocent Sin. I stopped like 10 hours in, for whatever reason. Game's sweet, but uh... yeah. Someday.

Also, those shots of Strange Journey are very visually appealing, for whatever reason. Makes me want to actually crack open my copy of the game, though I think I might've left it at my law school apartment, so chances are I can't get to it this summer.

Man, just a lot of sadness in this corner.

Up to the path decision point, and managed to get all of them available. Still not sure which I want to go for, since my preferred path doesn't have an 8th day. I'll sleep on it, I suppose.

Played a little bit more of EP over the weekend. Picking up from the Joker's first appearance...

TwUwT.png
bu10O.png

Philemon shows up and explains that he was the one who granted the party the power of Persona. He doesn't really explain much more beyond that and how rumors are becoming a reality in the entirety of Sumaru City, and abruptly disappears.

AZ2SR.png
qjL7i.png
mFIcd.png

The party can't really make much sense of Philemon's appearance, but given how they can actually stand a chance against demons, they decide to try to chase down the Joker before he can escape. The school is on lockdown at this point, but some faculty members eventually tell the party to search the Clock Tower on the top floor. Why? Because the faculty didn't want to do it themselves.

AWcgl.png
AC8vZ.png
OnYJs.png

Joker pleads with Anna about some nonsense of forgetting "This Side," but Anna isn't going for it. The party busts on the scene, but the Joker gets quite irritated and summons more demons to fight the party.

Pv1W3.png
RRrt7.png
nHRTY.png

Our first "boss fight" is against two Apeps and one Empusas (both of whom become random enemies in the very next dungeon for that matter). The party doesn't have too much difficulty here, as Fusion Spells between multiple party members (think of them as Double/Triple Techs from Chrono Trigger) do a lot of damage on enemies. Once this is over, the Joker quickly casts a sleeping spell on the party. But the screen fades to black and we can hear sword slashes...

bawxr.png

And naturally, the "Deja Vu Boy" Ulala was referring to manages to both fend off the Joker and save everyone, Anna included.

L25GB.png
Z08DL.png
GzItc.png

And with that, Deja Vu Boy just... leaves. His request is kinda loaded, but we'll worry about that later.

KecdQ.png
E5npu.png

This is Katsuya's boss for all intents and purposes. Like Maya's boss, he is also an asshole. He is quite disappointed that Katsuya couldn't catch the Joker and suggests that Katsuya just take a vacation from work, and as he walks out, the Captain mutters "Like father, like son..." within earshot of Katsuya. He shrugs this off.

NqlfR.png
ZxE6F.png

Ulala wonders if he actually will take that "vacation" but Katsuya is pretty adamant. It's not pictured, but Katsuya is actually pretty shaken by Ulala's insult to his sideburns. But we might as well go to the Kuzunoha Detective Agency like the Deja Vu Boy suggested. But first, we need to go to 2X Slash, a cyber bar.

GnYji.png
dBmpR.png
Ng0jV.png

I should note that "Wang Long" fortune telling actually a running theme in this game. For instance, the fortune of bad luck is referred to as "Joka". What I did here is actually a way to get an absurdly powerful persona later in the game. I have no idea where exactly you were supposed to figure this out, either. But Hastur has a lot to do with Cthulhu Mythos. But anyway, back to the plot...

Liwk3.png
XjbdX.png

I would have loved to have "Devil Summoning" as a part-time job during college. (Hint: This is one of the main characters from Shin Megami Tensei: If... Speaking of that game, wasn't there supposed to be a fan-translation coming out soon?)

xmIrI.png
a6Eyj.png

I like how nonchalant this guy is about the fact that rumors actually become reality in this city. But if you want rumors spread, you come to this guy.

1N2tS.png
Jxnn8.png

But apparently, this Baofu guy has an ear pretty close to the ground in terms of rumor-making. Maya uses the online handle "Rabbit" to talk to him and we get a meeting place. If we hang around the office for a little bit, Ulala has this to say about the chief.

HdPmb.png

No one should trust Ulala's "mantenna."

iaUqV.png
IDHwV.png
URcXC.png

Apparently Persona users can sense each other. For the newer persona titles, this was only really true of special users like Fuka, Rise, and Mitsuru who had personae especially dedicated for sensing. Although, most persona users in P1 and the P2 titles could change persona at will for the most part (users in these titles sometimes faced restrictions due to Arcana Compatibility, while changing personae in P3 and P4 was something special that only their main characters had)... It's just a little interesting how much more restrictive persona summoning is in the newer titles as opposed to the older ones. But anyway, Baofu leads us to a bar so he can hear our story.

9PRPd.png
9Dgi7.png
0zn1j.png

All things seem to lead to the current foreign minister of Japan...

7Sw1U.png
TR1t9.png

Ulala's a bit slow on the uptake, as usual. But Katsuya is still pretty slow to trust Baofu, let alone this ridiculousness surrounding rumors.

j39Bg.png
QAVQX.png
651F7.png

Baofu believes that seeing is believing, so to speak. With the touch of a phone, the bar is now a black market arms dealer. Even Baofu is pretty surprised by this, but it shows the power of rumor-spreading. With that said, Baofu brings up a good point; it will also prove to be true for the rumor that Deja Vu Boy also suggested in terms of warding off the Joker with the High School emblem. But since we kinda want to track down the Joker, this would be counter productive to our purposes.

Dabq3.png
9IHqI.png
RexiG.png

Maya decides to set the emblem on fire instead of just tossing it.

Ld5Pc.png

Baofu suggests that we should pay a visit to the foreign Minister's son, Tatsuya Sudou in order to get some clues on the Joker killings. Yes, Tatsuya Sudou and Tatsuya Suou are supposed to be completely different people. This also confused the fuck out of me when I played this as a kid. But before we do that... Baofu decides to introduce us to some help, given how only persona users can really stand a chance against the Joker's demons.

XDvh5.png
qvELB.png

If there is one thing that is consistent across all Persona games, it is Igor (and I guess the concept of the Velvet Room itself, but it undergoes some cosmetic changes over the next couple of games).

OVeFt.png
9L3ec.png
FIDM6.png

Interestingly, the pianist and vocalist for the Velvet Room song (well.. I guess "songs" in this case, as there is more than one Velvet Room song in this game) are actual characters! There's the Demon Artist too, but we don't have much of a use for him just yet. Someone also gets a cookie if they can guess who the Demon Artist is supposed to be based off of.

Well, off to Sanitarium. I'll post an update of that later (since it is essentially a back-to-back dungeon which unfortunately comes up quite a bit in this game).

I wonder how close EP PSP's script will be to the PS1 version.

Lunarvaleisms aside, it's a great translation.

It's also my favorite Persona game.

Yeah the more I think about it the more ridiculous it seems that we'd get boxed copies of Gungnir and Growlanser, but no physical edition for the company's flagship series these days. PSP will be just as dead 5-6 months from now, I'm not gonna worry about us missing out.

In any case, I think I'm near the end of Trauma Team and I just thought of a way I can contribute to this thread with screenshots. I totally forgot I had started playing SMT:Imagine a little while ago. My laptop started giving me issues (I thought an i5 processor with turbo boost is supposed to be good?) so I put my playthrough on hold. I'm thinking I will try to start again and power through, despite MMOs probably being my least favorite genre. If this franchise can't get me through the tedious clicking then nothing ever will.

I'd love to see a playthrough of Imagine, if only because I'll never have the patience to play it myself.

Oh boy, welcome to hell. The Kresnik/Kudiak quest is fun times, though.

I've actually equipped one of the encounter-reducing sub apps (formerly reserved for trips to old sectors) because the back-and-forth crap with all these conveyor belts is driving me nuts. But I'm getting through it... slowly!

I'm pretty curious about that myself. I could see a localized PSP version having more honorifics (and to be honest, I'm not quite sure how I would feel about that given how used I am to the PSX translation and how these are not high school students referring to themselves/upperclassmen/teachers most of the time). But then again, IS was especially light on that regard in comparison to P3/P4... Hm.

So I just broke the 20 hour mark in P3. Digging things so far.

I'm playing on easy since I rarely play RPGs. Even so, easy is pretty easy so far. I remembered getting so destroyed by the matador in Noctune that I stopped playing(this was at release), and I didn't want to have something like that happen again.

The clearly-the-same-for-budget-reasons Tartarus is pretty boring to run around. Definitely the worst part of the game and really disappointing to spend all my time in a place with no real variety(thus far, anyway).

It repeats far too much, but minus a couple tracks the soundtrack is pretty awesome. The song that plays when hanging out with friends is probably my favorite.

Finished Devil Survivor. Toward the end, I realized that the diversion wasn't as necessary as I thought, and I was getting kinda bored. But now it's done, so I'll be moving onto DDS soon.

Tartarus is pretty boring. It being randomized doesn't really make it much better. Persona 4's dungeons are at least themed, but remain randomized.

Made it to Asaskusa and did all the necessary stuff there, except that puzzle game. That thing's pure evil. After that I backtracked to finish all bosses in the previous dungeon, somehow I missed all of them. Also went to do the Second Kalpa but the game froze on me when I was midway through. Was not amused. Is Estoma level depended like it is in the Pokemon games? I notice areas where it barely does a thing and other ones where I don't get an encounter for the entire cycle.

Got a sweet Kushinada so far. Can't remember which demon (one I fused that one into Sarasvati) super early on skill changed to Samrecarm upon level up and another one turned into Dekaja. So right now my just fused Kushinada has Mediarama, Nag, Toxic Sting, Mana Refill, Samrecarm, Mazanma, Analyse (meh, but functional), Dekaja. Not super spectacular but for the point I'm at in the game, hands down my best fusion so far.

guys, GUYS.
today I bought Digital Devil Saga for 9,98 euros in a supermarket and I never played a SMT before. did I it right?

Zerokku

WHAT HAVE YOU DONE?
At the point of no return in Nocturne and trying to decide which ending to go for.

I'm set for the neutral, but haven't "locked it in". Finished the 4th Kalpa.

The only thing thats making me lean towards neutral is that I'm not sure I want to face
Lucifer
if I'm going for TDE.

I know I'd have to do some grinding to make sure I have the proper abilities.

Currently at level 70, physical focused MC, and my party consists of the black and red riders and daisoujou in their 60s. I've pretty much stomped through every boss for the last 10 hours including
beelzebub

I put Gravity Rush aside after about 10 chapters, so not technically.

With Gaea as my main magatama until I get masakados:

Strength: 40
Magic: 10
Vitality: 40
Agility: 25
Luck: 6

Abilities:
Lunge
Analyze
Might
Focus
Divine Shot
Life Gain
Bolt Storm
Avenge

Would replace analyze with pierce and lunge with Freikugel before the fight.

I'm also at the poin in P3 where I have to select party members. Inactive members don't receive XP, do they? If not, am I better off concentrating on leveling a full party or everyone?

Oh boy time to do the Second Kalpa for the third time. First time it froze during a random encounter in the invisible wall maze. This time I completed everything, cleaned up the entire thing. On my way to the third one. 'Should I save or do the cursed hallway now that I pass it? I'll be fine!" I get the huge money reward from the demon at the end, am annoyed I have to backtrack it a bit. I'm two steps from the entrance when boom surprise attack encounter. First demon does a buff attack, second something equally harmless, third one crits the MC and there goes an hour of playtime again. Probably the hardest an SMT has made me mad. Not the rage kind of mad, but rather the soul crushing demotivating type.

Let's do it! ...Maybe.

I debated quite a bit about whether to do a new cycle or not. I'm not big on new game+ stuff in general, because I don't like starting a game with everything already available to me. In DDS, new cycle carries over all of your mantra skills, which removes some of the fun of progression. On the other hand, you don't get to fight demi-fiend, so there's that to consider. I don't really care to fight him, mind, because I've got better things to do with my time, much to cj_iwakura's chagrin. Regardless, I still haven't made up my mind.

Well, I've done it before. My new cycle save that I'd load to do another one has credit for that already on my save, and it's the one I'd probably import into DDS2 when I get to it. I just don't know if I really want to do it again.

Aeana

I decided to go ahead with the new cycle. I remembered how linear and kinda boring the mantra system is in DDS1, so it doesn't really matter that much in the end. DDS2 has the mantra system I really love, and I will definitely be starting from scratch in that one. Plus you're still limited by your levels and stats for which skills you can actually reasonably use, soo shrug.

Still, it kinda feels like cheating. (._. )

How do I make one, and how do I buy things with it? (._.)

Create a new account on your PS3, say you're from Europe/(ideally an English-speaking country), have a fake address ready. The rest is cake.

The tough part is buying, since you need EU region cards.

And DDS NG+ is still kind of difficult.

Just not very.

DDS on European PSN would be PAL though, so... it might not be something you actually want. Your TV might not even be able to display it properly, although I believe modern TVs usually can deal with that.

Not to forget that DDS is not yet released on the European PSN and still has no real date. By the time it comes out, the US might get it, too.

The ship touches down in Bootes, and Zelenin and I start to make the trek to the palace... but we don’t get far before we’re greeted by a familiar face.

The angel seems to hint at being able to help us in some way, or at least to give us some guidance... but not before we get lectured for our reliance on technology. And demons. Mmm, technology and demons. Two great tastes that taste great together. I like Mastema and all, but I’m not a fan of being preached at.

6JJil.png
MrEfL.png
eryY1.png

He seems a little miffed at my reply, but he does tell us that there’s definitely a link between Mitra’s experiments in Bootes and the crew in Delphinus going feral. The palace is the key, so let’s get searching... Sure enough, with a little poking around the palace (and some help from a loose-lipped demon I find along the way), we discover a hidden area on the 8th floor. Zelenin and I get in touch with our inner raccoons and start oohing and aahing over the shiny things inside.

IXeQL.png
Bofxs.png
Xlvki.png

OK, Mastema. #1, stop sneaking up on me like that. #2, I can’t help but remember that when Norris got changed into a zombie, it was because of something called “madman’s blood.” Gee, I wonder if the two things are connected?

mIPOd.png
ThTqy.png

Luckily Mastema is here to beat me over the head with the point... although I haven’t heard of this “Asura” before. Alright, let’s take the stone back to the ship and see whether we can effect a cure.

FCpus.png

I obtain the MK Gun (which Irving fashions from the stone) and test it on one of the poor bastards in sickbay... and it works!

OQYAV.png

High five, Monitor Woman! OK, now I’ve gotta get back to Delphinus and stop the crew there from tearing each other’s throats out.

NSKmM.png

Well, stop some of them, anyway. =/

gEET6.png

I manage to sneak up on Jimenez, who apparently hasn’t moved an inch the entire time I’ve been gone, and fire the MK Gun. But just as I do--

Y1OK4.png
Q8BQS.png

Bugaboo shows up, trying to protect his master! Zelenin demonstrates zero concern for his safety and urges me to shoot them both, which I do (this isn’t a player decision, it just happens).

bPmzj.png

Jimenez returns to his senses and quickly puts Bugaboo back in his Demonica... hope the little guy’s OK, because he really howled when he got shot. =/

k5YW3.png

Now that we have a cure--and, apparently, the location of the quantum tunnel, which must have been discovered while I was away--we’re free to continue our primary mission. Before I set out again, though, one of the formerly infected crew mentions that when he was sick, it felt like someone was watching him... someone like Commander Gore. Hmm. I’ll just file that little tidbit away for now.

OK, so I’m back out on the field, and I’m getting not one but multiple Rosetta readings on my map. What’s going on here? Let’s track down the nearest one and see what’s up.

CYjtT.png
RBPvj.png
Nz13Y.png

Turns out this red thing is a manifestation of the parasite that infected the crew. It’s pretty easy to take down, but it doesn’t cough up a Rosetta. Same deal with the other sites on the map--they all trigger a fight, but no reward save a decent chunk of XP. But just when I’m about to give up and get on with exploring the sector some more...

yhKFG.png

C...Commander Gore? Damn, you sure can fill out a tux! I, uh, I thought you were dead!

KMDkQ.png
nGWLT.png

22NU1.png

He goes on about humans ruining the world, just like everyone else in the game has already done. I decide to humor him and agree with his diatribe.

V8L4M.png
2XDwu.png

Zelenin apparently pretends not to hear me. Arthur does, though... but he says he’ll let it slide because I must be stressed. Heh.

CCdWi.png

There’s a neat-looking statue in here. It’s lifeless right now, but after several more encounters with the red sphere-looking demons, as well as several floors of exploration...

7L1t1.png

It comes back to life! (I had actually forgotten the statue existed by the time I finished exploring the sector--yeah, it took me that long--so I was left sitting on the top floor wondering why there didn’t seem to be anywhere left for me to go.)

6JmBW.png
GVHps.png

More humans-as-destroyers rhetoric. Asura’s method of dealing with us, it seems, is to “polish” our spirits until they’re beautiful flawless gems. Sounds nice enough in theory, but I’m not quite ready to have my essence ground away on some kind of karmic lathe. (No, I don’t have any idea about how gems are actually made.) Guess that means we have to fight!

Asura is weak to ice. Conversely, he loves to throw Maragidyne at me, and with two of my regular party members weak to fire, my first battle attempt was short and pathetic. So I equipped some fire-resistant armor and called in a couple special fusions: Frost Ace and Black Frost, both ice users who reflect fire damage. They’re Neutral, so I lose the whole-party Chaos synergy that I’ve been rocking the entire game, but that turns out not to matter.

With Maragidyne rendered almost completely useless, Asura’s other attacks are manageable, but still pretty fierce. Asura Roga inflicts a berserk status ailment on potentially the whole party, which can really suck--plus, if a party member is berserk, they won’t participate in a co-op attack if someone else hits Asura’s weakness. Black Flame is a concentrated fire attack on a single party member: not a problem for the two Frosts, or for me, but of course he used it on the single party member with no fire resistance in particular. Finally, Ashura is a lightning-quick physical attack that hits the whole party for significant damage. All that said, if you can keep throwing synergized ice attacks at him he actually goes down pretty quick.

I gain two levels from this fight! Black Frost gets three levels, and finally I get a useful skill mutation.

Yes he did. Yes I did.

Back on the ship, Arthur announces that we are very close to finding the Vanishing Point, and says it is “in a sector unlike those we have investigated thus far.” Does that mean it will be a small, straightforward, non-twisty-corridor dungeon? No, because this is Shin Megami Tensei. (And this thread has let me know what to expect. :()

Break time. Zelenin shares some of her misgivings with me. I’m not much help.

Then my buddy Jimenez shows up, looking like he’s doing better.

Ooh! What is it? Scarring? Rash? Lycanthropy?

Aw, that’s it? :( He also makes a joke about how everyone should try being possessed, and Z loses her shit because she has no sense of humor whatsoever. But Jimenez is actually being fairly serious himself, reflecting on human nature.

Back on the bridge, Arthur explains our dilemma. We have access to the quantum tunnel, just like we did in previous sectors. However, if we go through Delphinus’ tunnel, we will actually end up back in Antlia! We’re in an infinite loop, in other words. But, if we instead chart our own course to where we’ve determined the Vanishing Point to be, we should end up somewhere new--and hopefully somewhat closer to getting back to Earth.

Only one way to find out. Let’s boogie!

How do you connect your PS2 to your capture card? Your picture looks a lot clearer than mine.

I guess you learn a new word everyday. I had to look that up.
I use s-video. I wish I had a capture device that accepted component, but alas, mine is ancient.

I'm definitely not going to do the kind of constant update posts like I did with SMT2. I'm sure most people have already played DDS, so I'll just give the highlights like boss fights and cool moments and stuff.
