GAF Steam Sale Hunt

Ah, I don't think that I'd play Red Orchestra. I'm fine with keeping it in the pool.

And regarding the prize surplus, I'd like to vote #2 for the fun of it but it does seem like it'd be terribly inconvenient. Option #3 is probably best.

Contest #21 Where will you guide your character to in Mount and Blade?
bLQmY.jpg
Props to OmegaDragon for this one:
Play up to 10 days and describe what you did. You can do whatever you want in M&B from the start. Works with the DEMO.
A pic of your character, your army, something else (epic battle you joined? Amount of money you made? Factions/nobles that love/hate you?) would be nice.

Some examples of things you could do:
- Be a good guy and do quests, fight bandits
- Just try to do as much as you can to get the most money/biggest army/best gear
- Kill peasants, loot villages
- Try to get as much money as possible, go trading
- Try to join one of the factions as a mercenary, if you are lucky you can participate in a 100 v 100 battle
- Duel with nobles, court ladies.

"Rules"
- Make a new character
- Difficulty settings: I would put damage on easy or normal. With easy you can survive a hit or two, with normal one two hits will incap you. That might be a bit much, especially for newer players.
- Saving: realistic, the in game option that prevents reloading saves/quitting without saving
- Time limit: Depends, I would advise people to play around 10 ingame days, gives you some time to build up an army/get money/whatever.
- 2 random winners
- Any M&B is fine.

And again: Have fun!

Contest #19

Games I don't like? I have a few, but then again, too few to--

Tobe's Vertical Adventure - it's like Spelunky crossed with Bomb Jack, except even more retro!!!1!!11

MindJack - have you ever waited at a bus stop, or in a queue at the 7-11 or whatever, behind a beautiful woman (or, er, totally buff dude, let's not discriminate), and secretly wished you could be all up in that bodacious bod? Well, with MindJack, from the makers of Final Fantasy, your fantasies can come true - with the added bonus of firearms!
'Coz there's nothing sexier than emptying your payload into someone's stomach, right, bros?

Fez - worry not, patriotic Xbros! This game may look all cutesy and Pixel-y and Japanese-like, but the guy who made it is DEFINITELY NOT A WEEABOO, so it's totally OK! USA USA USA *salutes as bald eagle flies past the Stars & Stripes*

Eternity's Child - well, the player character does move like you want him to some of the time. I mean, that's good enough, right?

EDIT: Dammit, too late.

Contest #22 Shmuppreciation: Jamestown
Alright, this contest wont have a demo, but it has been in a few bundles already, is one of the games in the current Indie bundle (together with VVVVV and Zeno Clash, 2 GAF favourites), and is rather cheap at 60% off from its main price. 3,60€ now.
Oh and I heartily recommend it. It will take a while to understand the mechanics at work here, but once you "get" it, its a very, very good Shmup with amazing Pixelart eyecandy. Fair warning, it is rather short if you only play through it once, but beating the whole game on all difficulty settings will definitely keep you busy for a while.

- Contest runs until the next batch of daily deals goes up, so tomorrow 7pm GMT+2.
- Level 1: East Frontier
- Feel free to use any ship
- "Difficult" difficulty
- Screenshot of your score
- 1 highscore winner + 1 random winner
- Use your own screenshots!

And again: Have fun!

Contest #23 Acronymize a Videogame
Make an acronym out of a video game character or game title. The words used should be somehow related to the game. Bonus points if you create a phrase or sentence.
Example said:
Mustachioed
Aloof
Running
Italian
Overweight

- Contest runs until the next batch of daily deals goes up, so tomorrow 7pm GMT+2.
- 1 winner by vote + 1 random winner
- Try to think of your own acronyms, dont "steal" other ideas from the internet please.
- Feel free to enter more than one contest and post it in the thread, but remember to add it to your first contest post!
Make us laugh!

Contest #23:

Cogs - Come On, Get Sliding
LIMBO - Life In Monochrome Becomes Obnoxious
VVVVVV - Virtuous Versatile Versicolor Vertigo Visiting Viking
Bastion - Boy And Some Tenacious Inexhaustible Old Narrator
GISH - Gunk Is Slow, Help!
BRAID - Boy Running All In Distress
SpaceChem - Seems Probably About Chemistry; Effectively, Come Help Engineer Moustachium

Contest 21 - I played for 4 days and:

Killed some bandits
Sold some slaves
Entered a lot of melee contests, and generally took out about 10 guys
Took a quest from a lord
Got taken prisoner
Delivered a letter

And it just didn't click. I remember loving this game many years ago (or at least, the original), but something about it now isn't working for me.

Finally be able to compete again after two days because I was busy. The acronym challenge in particular sounds fun. Predicting lots of great entries with the level of creativity on GAF

Won't be able to compete for the rest of the contest, so good luck to everybody and thx to Toma and The_Monk :).

And thx to Toma again for donating Magicka, will PM you.

Haha, the game is really about how to plan your way through the level, when to use the multiplyer etc. I liked trying to figure out my perfect route :)

I wanna say thanks to The_Monk for counting all the votes, thanks to DoA for my gift, thanks to all the other Gaffers who provided gifts AND of course thanks to TOMA for "hosting" all of this!

Born from a thief and spending her early years as a shop assistant (selling leeches) life was always going to be tough for Betty McBloodsucker. However as she grew up, she became a lady in waiting. But waiting for what? She was never sure.

captureleuyr.png

One day she met a young adventurer called Wander. Despite not summoning the courage to talk to him on that drunken night in the bar, the meeting inspired her to venture off into the world to sate her Wander lust.

Beginning her search for Wander, she joined a caravan to Praven in the Kingdom of Swadia. Betty was quickly attacked by a bandit and the camera controls, but quickly overcome both. She was then rescued by a brave merchant, whom took her back to his house, where she found no matter how hard she tried, she could not punch him in the head.

Off to Tevarin castle then, where a request for entry was soon granted. Heading to the Lord's hall, Betty decided to ask about Wander, and if he was known in these parts.

mb2gduzk.jpg

Whilst there she also asked the lord for his support to put her on the throne of Calradia. It seemed like a long shot, but she didn't want to end up making two trips. Thinking an empty promise was the best promise, she decided to tempt him with lands. This was not successful and Lady Melisar offered no help either, being kind of a bitch.

mb46wfg0.jpg

Leaving them quickly, she travelled to the nearby village of Azgad. There she considered her options carefully and decided the best way to gain Wander's respect would be to take hostile action, letting her fame and infamy spread throughout the land.

mb6tqu2d.jpg

The villages were quite angry about this, forcing her to charge them and teach them a lesson in respect that you should never mess with Betty McBloodsucker. Riding her trusty steed Greg into battle she soon learnt that she had underestimated the effect of the kingdoms breed for propsperity program and was overwhelemed by the hoard.

mb1asulw.jpg

So ended the short but eventful adventure of Betty, ripped apart and eaten by villages, who were also werewolves and one vampire.

Contest #21 Where will you guide your character to in Mount and Blade?

Journal of freelancer DeS3InY, With Fire and Sword!

Day 1 (March 23rd, 1955)

Started up at a small village where I helped Clermont's party to clear out some thugs. After supper and a good night sleep I went to the nearest big city, which was Smolensk.
There I went to the tavern where I met Prince Janus Radzivil and we chatted a little about political affairs of Poland and Lithuania.

In the same tavern was a raggedy chap by the name of Fedot, a marksman that has fled from his employment for troubling reasons. As a honorable warrior, he would surely be of use to me in the coming days so I asked him would he be willing to join me in my travels. He accepted after I paid him 400 thalers so his wife could be cared for. After that we went on to the marketplace to buy some equipment and food so we can continue on our journey.

After buying some food we went to the nearby village of Sofronovo to find some recruits and perhaps a job too. There was nothing for us there, but we were able tu cut a deal with the local merchant for some of our supplies so we continued onward.

Tula was close so we decidet to go there. Unfortunately we encountered some bandits in our path and we were forced to fight. Fedot took one bandit out but was knocked out, the poor bastard. Luckily I was on a horse and had no problems with the remaining three bandits. We looted them, took one bandit prisoner and continued on our path.

It was getting dark so we decided to stay the night at Tula, after visiting merchants and selling some loot.

Day 2 (March 24th, 1955)

When the sun rose we went on to a nearby village Pokrovskoye, trying to find some people willing to help us in our travels. The Elder there had a proposition for us. We were to procure 5 bags of wheat for him so his villagers do not starve when next harvest passes. We gladly accepted this quest, recruited 3 Staff Militia and went on our way.

As we were leaving, more bandits appeared. Seven of them to be exact. Though Fedot was injured we had no choice but to refuse their claims for our stuff and attacked them!
The three Militia guys and I charged onto the bandits as Fedot stayed behind. I managed to take down one of them with my rifle but not before they killed two of my men and knocked down the third. I was uneasy but I had to continue. Circling around them I picked off two more, but then my horse collapsed. Poor thing received more bullets than anyone should be asked to take. Angrily I took out the bandit that was nearest to me and made him pay the price. Unfortunetely there were three more bandits that were aiming down to shoot me down so I strategically retreated behind a small hill. That choice turned out to be very smart as two more bandits fell from the wrath of my rifle. Last one remained and when he fired off his projectile I charged at him and thrust my saber through his heart.
Fortunately the poor animal was just unconscious and after a bit of patching up we were able to continue on our path to the next village.

Ponyri was our next stop, where we sold our loot and bought our first bag of wheat for the Elder of Pokrovskoye. Some villagers were eager to join us so we gained three burly fellows that were very proficient with Scythes.

We then continued to Kursk as I was hoping to find more wheat there, but to no avail. While going through nearby villages the night cam and we were forced to make camp in the middle of the forest. After the night we set off on our path to Smolensk in our quest to find wheat.

Day 6 (March 28th, 1955)

We were so consumed by our quest that we didn't even recruit people. We passed through countless cities in search for the illusive wheat. We went as far as the Cossack territory. Only one bag of wheat was to be gound when a band of deserters intercepted our party. We had no choice but to battle them. Though this fight was going to be hard, as they were on horseback.

Day 8 (March 30th, 1955)

I finally escaped! Those nasty deserters killed my men and took me and Fedot prisoner, but I managed to escape! Three of them were downed in that fight but their horses were too fast for me and my men. But I must go on, finish my quest and find Fedot! I continued towards a nearby village and there I found enough wheat so I could finish my quest at Pokrovskoye! I must press on and avoid combat as I am still weak.

Day 9 (March 31th, 1955)

After spending the night at Bratslav I continued. Pereyaslav was the destination as I needed to rest for the night.

Day 10 (April 1st, 1955)

Continuing towards Pokrovskoye I encountered looters! Filthy vermin, out for my coins. Well I'll be damn if I give them any! An easy task as it turned out to be, six of them, on foot with no ranged capabilities. Two fell instantly by my trusty rifle, and one of them started fleeing. He met my saber's cold sharp edge. Two of the remaining I shot and the last one fled. He too met with my sharp blade.

Kursk was on my path, and it was under siege so I decided to go straight there, even if it meant travelling by night.

It was late evening as I approached Pokrovskoye, when I found out horrible things. Bandits were attacking the village and I was the only one that could help them! I didn't think and rushed in, Trying to take down as many bandits as I could. Oh it was a beautiful victory as a dozen of farmers and I charged the twenty four bandits that were raiding their village. All of them fell, but the five brave farmers that were injured didn't make it. The Elder thanked me and offered their whole wealth for my heroic actions, which I kindly refused as they clearly needed it more than I did.

After we cleared the village of bodies and made proper arrangements for the burials, I decided to give the Elder more good news. As I brought him those five bags of wheat he asked of me, his face was practically shining! After we dined and talked I went to bed feeling that my experience had grown and that I was capable of more good deeds than before!

So as usual I got a bit carried away and played 30 days in Warband. I don't know if this will be my entry.

I wanted to play a two handed infantry role, because I've never played it before. My intention was to create a group of viking warriors that would plunder adjacent towns, it's leader a berserker

So I started in the lands of the Nords, with a beard Thor could be proud of. I started with a bow and a two handed axe. I cleaved quite some heads with that beauty. However I soon found out that close quarter combat was hell, by the time I could swing my mighty axe I would got slashed to bits my swords. So I quickly grabbed a sword for my protection.
warband67kzv.jpg

The first few days were not very vikingy. I wanted to grow my warband to about 20 men and I wanted to upgrade them a bit. My first big battle was defending a village against bandits. I barely survived. Luckily most of the casualties were farmer, I only lost one. Oh and I almost won a tournament that would net me 1500 gold. It was the final round, 1 vs 1 infantry combat which is usually pretty easy. We both had an axe and a shield. I got a few hits on him, I got hit once but I blocked his other swings with my shield. So I figured that one more swing would end him. Yet somehow the bastard blocked all my swings with his axe and he broke my shield. I panicked and he kept hitting me and I went down. Nooo :(

After gathering about 20-30 men I had enough and embraced my pillaging viking heritage. First couple of victims were villages, I stole their goods and their cattle. Still a bit boring. So I attacked a caravan. Once the cavalry came to a halt on my infantry lines, it was show time. My axe sliced through horses and their riders. By the time the enemy archers reached the scene, their cavalry was dead and they were no match to my superior infantry (<3 Nords). Too bad the loot from the caravan was meh.

I wanted money, so I decided to plunder a Swadian village. It was a great idea, I got loads of good stuff to sell. Also I got some cattle, but I could not lead them to a safe haven because I got a pissed Swadian lord with an army of 100 men after me. I though I was almost done (all that loot made us slow), but the lord somehow thought we were not that important and returned to a castle. Probably because Swadia was at war with the Nords. Great opportunity to plunder :D

So I attacked some more caravans and plundered another village. I managed to take the cattle to some town in the country of the Nords and slaughtered them and sold their meat. I have quite some money now, but the Swadians and the Rhodoks hate me. I tried to join the Nord war machine, but the nobles don't like me. I haven't fought a professional army yet. Oh well, I now have quite some money (8K and I bought some sweet armour) and a decent army.

Contest #21:
Here is Shuggy, a veteran warrior from the Kingdom of the Nords.

Here's Shuggy valiantly charging into battle with his rag-tag crew of village volunteers.

Again, this time with the disadvantage in numbers. The last fight was far too easy.

Shuggy emerges victorious, heroically fending off 5 of the looters by himself after his worthless village recruits all decided to give up and die.

Shuggy gets mugged by another group of looters immediately afterwards and is forced to surrender.

And now, he has decided to go home and be a family man.

Finally sat down to improve on my SpaceChem avatar (for which I need to play through the game to get better ranks), until I apparently made something in a level that crashes the game. The changesI made were instantly saved and immediately load up upon reload of the level.

...

Unfortunately, the crash does as well.
I cannot continue the level, and I also cant reset the level progress from OUTSIDE of a level. I can delete stuff from WITHIN a level. To make matters worse, I cant continue playing the story missions since I cant skip that level.

Goddamnit.

Edit: restored to an older save I had on an older notebook. Still need to redo quite a bit. Meh.

Uph Toma, I've lost saves for long games before, but knowing you're the reason it's messed up and for a game like SpaceChem?
I just guess it's good that it's such a special experience to keep you going.

With (Edit: even greater) feelings of inappropriate timing, I'm posting Contest #22:

Well this is a crap hole.
Over where? Be more specific.
This place sucks, I'm out.
I like my chances.
This combat is fucking awful.
Yay I guess.
Maybe this place will suck less.
Dude offered me a job to move cattle in thirty days. Problem is I'm only playing up to ten.
Let's get some action.
Based on the prices of items sold in town that doesn't sound good at all.
Made me think of Jurassic Park.
Where'd my horse go!?
I can't ask where my horse went or stab anyone in town? This game sucks.

I would have done this game for Contest #19 if I'd played it beforehand.

Contest #21

Thus enters the hero of the 13th Century... TYRIAN THE CLOTHELESS! Yes, born to a family of hunters, raised in the castle, he fled to become a troubadour and then someone died so he became a warlord because, hey, Khan's a-comin' and we all gotta get some dough around here. His first battle is an easy one: some looters come and, to everyone's surprise, Tyrian wins! And he gets a swaggin' hat.

He spends many a day wandering the countryside, picking fights with bandits, being knocked unconscious and kidnapped, then recruiting a handful of men and going at it again. With barely enough money to pay his men, Tyrian eventually happens upon a castle, in which he attempts to prove his glory by buying a round for all present.

Needles to say, Tyrian takes his leave.

With a small band of soldiers, he happens upon a small town in need of wheat - five bags of wheat, to be exact. He sets out on his epic quest in search of wheat when he enters a castle, whose lord is owed money from some other lord. Deeming this task more worthy than some crappy old village, he sets out on a long journey across the frozen wastes of whateverland, fighting bandits with his now well-trained band of loyal warriors.

They are quickly killed by deserters from a nearby castle and Tyrian is taken prisoner once again. When he escapes, he continues to the castle of Lord Whateverhisnamewas, who does not recognize Tyrian as having any sovereignty, refuses to give this stranger 2500 denars, and is unswayed by Tyrian's inability to form a coherent argument. (His argument is so bad that it actually makes Tyrian dumber! True story.)

Dejected, Tyrian decides to go get that wheat or whatever. He found a bushel earlier, and now just needs four more! A nearby village provides one, and another has three in stock - happy days! Unfortunately, Tyrian remains penniless. His small band of followers is able to cross into warmer climes and gather some funds, leaving Tyrian short one bushel. While seeking a looted town, perhaps hoping to loot it even further, Tyrian is attacked by bandits, and after slaughtering them and their horses, finally enough money is obtained to pay for the wheat!

Another long journey to the village elder provides Tyrian with warm feelings of worth entirely undeserved. He and his small band of men leave to do more good - perhaps glory and wealthy are not the highest causes a man can devote himself to, he realizes. Perhaps simply being a crusader for the people is an aspiration truly Godly in manner.

Shortly after, Tyrian is once again captured by bandits. Perhaps, someday, he shall escape. But not this day.
