Forza 4 |OT| Where Porsche Are Driven

They must be getting ready to release the FM4 Ultimate Collection soon (I guess as soon as DLC is halted)?

I wouldn't read too much into it being reduced. For the past month they've had daily deals in the US for various Game on Demand releases. This week they've had reduced Season passes. Started with L.A. Noire then Mortal Kombat, UFC 3 and now Forza 4.

Mascot has a point, October will no doubt be the time for T10 to release a F.U.C edition al a FM3, as by then the current game will have been out roughly a year.

Don't give me hope. I've been waiting for the Ultimate Collection since Forza 4 came out. Used to think it didn't seem like that big of an improvement, but then all the awesome DLC cars came...

October is not the right month for an Ultimate Edition!

BTW regarding special editions, the FM4 Essentials Edition will be packed in a 360 bundle this Holiday. It is a stripped down version of FM4 featuring only 320 cars. It is meant as an appetizer for those who are new to the FM world.

When then? December?

I hope so and it would dovetail nicely with the Essentials Edition pack-in.
EX: Essentials + 2400pt unlock = Ultimate.

I've decided to forgo the rest of the monthly DLC unless some tracks show up and wait for the Ultimate Collection whenever it comes.
So two more DLC packs (Oct/Nov) then a FM4UC for Christmas would be excellent.

Seems a bit pointless. You can buy a brand-new copy of the full game for £12.

porsche pack is 800 fuckbucks right now. worth it?
I bought it. $20 was hard to swallow considering the lack of new cars, but for $10, it was hard to pass up.

I've still only tried a handful of them, but they're very good. This isn't just the same old Porsche's we had in FM3. The sounds are much improved, the handling of them is improved and they look better than ever. Personally, I'm excited that of ones I've tried(Boxster S, Cayman R, 997 GT3, 997 GT3 RS and 997 Sport Classic), they've all proven very competitive. The GT3 RS is a beast in S-class, especially. I've run numerous personal bests in it already.

I'll also be putting some cars up in the garage that I've built once I've spent a little more time tuning them. Like anything I put up, they'll be built to be competitive online, so you can be sure they're fast and not too difficult to drive.

Right....

Maybe it'll be bundled with the 4GB 360 so there's pretty much no room for all the Disc 2 stuff?

Just a heads up,

The Forza 4 Season Pass is half price for one day - 1200msp (previously 2400)

It will go back to full price about 20 hours after this post.

Would almost make it worth it for me.

I got 2 or 3 of the packs free thanks to code competitions.

(997 GT3 RS)

Such a twitchy little bitch that thing.

I ended having to lower front end grip to make it drivable for me. Too bad I can't tune well enough to increase rear grip because it would be amazing then :)

It will be bundeled with a 250GB 360 and a download code for Skyrim.

Is it sort of treated as a demo or something seeing as how cheap new copies are going for?

I'm guessing you can fill out the rest of the car/track roster through DLC.

My car is planted as can be. I haven't really done much to it tuning-wise other than basic gearing/camber/ride height changes so far. Perhaps its your build?

Actually, it's my reading lol.

I read it as "GT3 RSR", the normal GT3 RS is very good with just a standard tune.

Love the Alfa. Have no idea why you'd put the 8C's V8 in when you can get the little 2L one well over 10,000 RPM. So good.

The Corvette has a fantastic body kit.

Yep, the Alfa's engine sounds so good at 10k rpm.

Is it me or is the FOV in the Alfa quite wide compared to other cars?
Looks great nevertheless..

I guess as the Season Pass DLC has finished, the interest in DLC wanes.

I still look forward to the awesome screenshots everyday though.

I've not touched Forza 4 in a good 2 months due to moving home and ive been itching to play it recently.

We all know what would keep fm4 going for another year. Shame Dan doesn't.

Dan works for company that is apparently ready to release its 3rd consecutive hardware without HID/USB support thus again hurting potential performance and sales for all its racing franchises (and third party driving games with FFB wheel HID support) on the global saturation level just to retain its stupid BIOS policies of "one-user-per-input-device" and some money they earn from moneyhatting 3rd party hardware manufacturers.

I sincerely propose you to expect nothing.

I don't have a decent wheel Amar, but I completely agree with you. As far as I can tell, it is just MS being obtuse as there doesn't seem to be any logical reason why they would continue to do this.

Questions: Is an XID device compatible with an HID USB port/controller? Also, what would prevent them from having a dedicated XID port and then make the rest HID?

@Mascot, I think you're right. Beardy seemed surprised by the amount of hours that players were putting into FM4: Microsoft Showcase Interview with Beardy

Giant Bomb reviewed FM4, gave it 4 stars but said the improvements over 3 felt incremental

To me the improved driving mode/tire physics alone made 4 that much better than FM3. The audio is improved as well as the easy access to rivals modes. After a few laps it would really be tough to go back to 3.

We know what it is missing; tracks and track variation. So now that T10 has opened the flood gates with cars they need to do this with tracks for FM5. It's going to be tough because how many cars do they hold back from the retail game? how many car DLC will they release for 5? how many tracks at retail and how many track DLC?

Unfortunately I think the FM4 DLC template (cars, cars and more cars) has been a commercial success, so I can't see MS changing anything for FM5. I fully expect a season pass, monthly cars and no tracks for the next Forza.

Like I've said before: if you want Rhianna to start doing porn you've got to stop buying her records.

I've been working my ass off in class learning about radiographs, but I've still made time to play Forza! It's a brand new game using the clutch. I'm having so much fun with cars now because I really feel the difference between a Mustang and a Corvette. I can't believe how rich this game is.

What have my ladies at GAF been up to?

You are using clutch with a Controller Sarbear? I've tried (with regular controller) and it made me an even worst driver.

I also been in some random Online matches and I can't believe how bad luck I have it there. Like I said before I don't mind last place since it's about the fun but I always, always race clean but my opponents must think they are driving Tanks and the objective here is to put everyone on Grass and Sand. Ugh.

Also for fellow GAFfers with the Porsche DLC I don't know if it was mentioned before but in the Porsche 911 Turbe (997) Spec Series there are 4 Races but it only show 3. If you beat them all you'll get 4/3. Is this normal?

Here is a picture:

Maybe it's just me but I found it odd.

Yes, I am using a regular controller. There is a small learning curve, but once you understand how to hit both the clutch and the shift at the same time you'll wonder why you didn't do it all along. I first tried it out on an oval to understand how to properly shift but couldn't make sense of it. Finally, I just had to load up a track and try to race it as normal for it to click. I remember my first five laps I was doing the exact same times as I would without the clutch, so that's always good. Then I started understanding I could brake MUCH later....and the rest has been magic.

The QA on the Porsche Pack is quite poor. Loads of typos and spelling mistakes.

Man, the combination of unlocking more R1 cars and playing my own private multiplayer matches against AI is breathing new air into this game for me.

Guess there is a part of me that truly does still love circuit races. I'll take the next course in the World Tour and use it as the basis for a custom race, hard AI, and 20 laps or so. Instead of enabling the driving line for tracks I have a problem with, I'll just try to maintain my position behind a few cars and get the basics and work from there.

After those 20 laps I'm usually very comfortable with the faster cars, the course and am used to driving within and overtaking a crowded field with AI, so when I get back to career things go very smoothly.

Just sharing the joy. Private matches have saved this game for me.

Unicorn questions:

Q:You folks who have been playing since October, have you collected all of them?

I finally completed the set within the last few months. I thought I would never get them all and it was really irking me from an OCD standpoint.

Q:Do you think/hope T10 will use around the same amount or less for FM5?

In a way I hope there might be less even though this time around T10 held more photography contests on FB and the FM.net forums and had community involvement posts on FM.net as well.

The "Game with Dev" stuff, oh man all of the kiddies spamming the chat begging for unicorns. It would be nice to not have to deal with that in the next FM$ release.

Last time I tried with the clutch was some time ago so I don't remember, but I used the default controls.

I don't know anyone that uses the default LB clutch. Really awkward for downshifts.

Nope. Have some (5?) of them, I don't feel I am missing out on anything. Wouldn't mind the M3 GTR homologation special.

I know ONE person that uses the "claw" approach and he's just slightly slower than me. But not by much. Whatever works, I suppose.

Questions: Is an XID device compatible with an HID USB port/controller? Also, what would prevent them from having a dedicated XID port and then make the rest HID?

No, it is not. It is different *communication protocol* and from information I've gathered on this subject through past years, it is 100% intentional decision of MS to have only XID (Xinput) on their consoles because it is their proprietary API technology developed especially for X360.

If you read this article regarding Xinput, you will notice all purely intentional limitations of Xinput (comparable to their previous API, DirectInput) which disabled everything which didn't fit into MS *plan* regarding ways to handle X360 input devices.

What is more unbelievable is how it was Microsoft's own DirectInput that was the real pioneer of the full force feedback technology that we know today, used on legendary Microsoft Sidewinder FFB wheel back in 2000 (Immersion Corp. came out with their TouchSense technology a full year later, in 2001, and launched its first wheel full year after the Sidewinder).

And best part: DirectInput supported HID. Sidewinder is a full USB/HID wheel.

For a second question, answer is easy. If they would *enable* one HID port, they could kiss goodbye revenue they make from licensing X360 third-party devices through Xinput (XID) API. Every third-party device manufacturer has to pay a licensing fee in order to get access to Xinput libraries.

Another thing is their decision to design OS (BIOS) as "one device per profile", which also hurts all of us Forza players. Because of that, we can't use (assign to one profile) controller and wheel in the same time (as we can on both PS3/PC thanx to HID) so playability of Forza (or Gotham, or TDU - basically every game that had either PhotoMode, Livery Editor or 3D spaces) is severely compromised because of need to constantly reboot the game with other type of devices (controller when you want to be creative, wheel when you want to drive).

And on the same note, it really does not help how usage of Xinput made a total clusterfuck regarding 900-degree implementation (which is emulated through special type of SDK which emulates 900 from 270 in the real-time, because 900-linearity axis is not naturally supported in Xinput standardisation) and resets every time you disconnect device on-the-fly - resulting with messed-up linearity (game resets back to 270) and you have to perform a black-magic procedure or simply reset everything if you want the wheel to work fine.

But all above is nothing compared to best (worst) thing: XID-driven force feedback essentially does not communicate with the game directly, but instead it creates FFB through pre-determined commands, practically emulating FFB effects. As a side-result, sensation of countersteer on FFB wheels in 900-mode is severely compromised because system can't cope with maintaining *tensioned* FFB (as you can experience on either PC/PS3 where you can *save* the grip when you loose it) because of the line of FFB "command" has already being issued to device. As it was explained by the guy from Logitech back in 2009 who worked on FX wheel:

On the PC or PS3 FF effects are created in the console and the console only sends out Force commands to the motor (left, right and how strong). This consumes some CPU power. Therefore MS decided to put a lot of pre-defined FF commands into the IC of the wheel and the console sends something like ("play FF effect #24" = "shaking while driving over rough surface").

In short, IMO, Microsoft is really crazy because of all the above and they are really hurting one of their most important franchises and one complete genre on their consoles. And from it seems at this point, NextBox will continue to do the same.

I think it's the R3 "euro" tour that is actually the Aussie V8 series.

For the longest time I thought there was no V8 series but while doing some of the R3 races I found it hidden inside the Euro tour lol.

Forza? QA? Noooooo.

Couldn't they just expand the API for the next xbox to make FFB better?

It is their decision, so they could do whatever they want. But at the end of this reply you will see they probably have no slightest intention to.

What is the main problem is actual execution of input (emulation of both steering degree and actual FFB effect instead being *direct* from the game - without API serving as "middle man") and their policy regarding Xinput limitations.

What I know is how dedicated and licensed X360 input device has to have the exact number of input-ports (axis, buttons, triggers as required by Xinput "XINPUT_DEVSUBTYPE_WHEEL" standardisation). That is one of the main reasons why Fanatec X360 compatible wheels are limited to required number of various buttons and can't have even one more button (functionality) more if they want to get X360 validation/Xinput validation (it is the only reason why new CSW wheel is not X360 compatible while CSR Elite model is, for instance).

Another problem regarding Xinput and USB support fro wheels is actual execution of the signal transfer and fact how Microsoft demands wireless devices without primary USB connectivity. Thus, the proper on-the-fly wheel calibration can't be done and has to be emulated on the wheel-side (internal BIOS). That is the main reason behind famous "first power on X360, than power the wheel" override to get proper 900-degree support (again, via emulation, not out-of-the-device/software) or evenly famous "switch from S_x to S_y setting on your Fanatec wheel - where S_y has to have 270 degrees - in order to execute Controler Disconnected command to prompt recalibration to 900 degrees".

Frankly, I am extremely amazed with actual results that Fanatec managed to achieve with their latest firmwares and level of sensation they managed to achieve on their devices with such problematic API foundation paved by Microsoft. I am greatly enjoying Forza 4 on the CSRE (as long as countersteer is not involved or as long as I do not have to drive a Koenigsegg) and recently I am positively surprised with the sensation I felt on F1 2012 demo (game has its own steering issues, but FFB effects are top-notch). BUt I think how Fanatec engineers spend countless hours in solving that Xinput-related madness.

In conclusion, I simply think how Microsoft decided to focus their development and policies towards majority of market, knowing how actual wheel users - and especially those who uses high-end wheels such as GT2/CSR/CSRE - are distant minority in overall scope of their plans regarding Xinput implementation (do not forget how XID was then also related to WXP compatibility and GFW standardisation of usage of X360 controllers on PC). So, they probably willingly decided to limit the API possibilities (the Wikipedia DirectInput article clearly describes how superior was DI related to XID) in order to establish standards for both third-party licensing and GFW compatibility.

So somehow, I really do not see it happening. It would be great, but from this point it is highly unlikely, especially with recent development of Xinput 1.4 and Microsoft wish for it to become the future-proof API.

Today Microsoft is forcing Xinput as their current API for Metro (also including Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8) and discourages developers to develop anything for DirectInput any more (because DirectInput is not available for Metro style apps).

You can discover many things by visiting this link (Windows Dev Center - Xinput) and see for yourself.

I can absolutely understand the benefits MS gets for this, but it does not change the fact how Xinput seriously undermines proper functionality and possibilities for the 900-degree FFB wheels on their console(s) which is a serious factor of prosperity for one whole genre.
