Neogaf 2012 Backlog Blitz - Where we give the middle finger to Steam sales

So what are the plans for the new year? Is this thread wiped and everyone starts out at zero again in a new thread?

Will there be a leaderboard for top performers? Perhaps bottom performers as well if we're feeling extra devilish?

While I like the idea, it would be hard to track since everyone's backlog length varies, so someone could get +37, while someone might only be able to max out at +10 if they have a small backlog.

Anyway, here's where I'm at right now:

Always dig your visual charting of your backlog, gonna do this next year.

Anyways, updated info:
9/15 Update

I don't see finishing this year in the positive, especially since I plan on picking up a Wii U. I included my purchases for Borderlands 2 and Torchlight 2 since they're already paid off.

Didn't fall off the wagon - just got spoiled on my birthday. However, I did beat one particular game that I thought would elude me forever and knocked over a healthy number of Wii games (albeit short ones).

Demons Souls: Never thought I'd beat it, but after The Red Star, I was feeling kind of ballsy and in need of a challenge. Was a rare case of me rushing straight home from work to play a game.

Ace Combat: Assault Horizon Legacy: I reckon the second to last mission in this (the one where you have to shoot down the missile with guns only before it hits the city) was harder /more frustrating than anything in Demons Souls.

Boom Blox: One of those ones I left almost finished years ago. Still fun, but there was one really bullshit defense map where you had to take out zombies with baseballs or some shit.

Batman: The Brave and the Bold: Pretty straightforward platformer - generally enjoyed it, but hated Guy Gardner.

Sonic and the Black Knight: Everybody hates on this game, but I actually found myself enjoying it. Helps that it's only about 2 hours long - I think it could have easily outstayed its welcome.

Street Fighter X Tekken: Interesting game, but I was always more interested in the Tekken X Street Fighter project.

Mario Strikers Charged Football: So, Next Level obviously reacted to people's complaints about the original Strikers being too easy by making this one some incredibly hard bullshit. I had a ridiculous surge of adrenaline after beating the bullshit final cup.

Red Steel 2: Loved this game - wound up playing it through in one sitting on Saturday afternoon.

Sky Crawlers: Basically Ace Combat with propeller planes - including the ridiculously hard final mission. I was up til 1 last night trying to beat it - end boss is just fucking cheap.

Currently playing:
Ace Combat: Assault Horizon - Got past that bullshit in the helicopter. Missions are quite long which doesn't gel well with playing during the week, so progress is slow.

Sleeping Dogs: Barely started, but enjoying it.

Max Payne 3: About 3 levels in, hate the bullshit screen effects on every camera cut.

Sonic Colours: I should probably save this for after I go back to Sonic Heroes, Sonic Unleashed, Shadow the Hedgehog and Sonic 2006, so I don't hate Sonic forever. Some genuinely good levels in this so far.

Rygar: Battle for Argus: Never played the PS2 original, so it's all new and good to me.

@arukoda, what did you think of sound shapes? I am not to into platformers but it has a weird appeal to me. Also, was the platinum very difficult?

I think Sound Shapes is great (certain songs are mindblowing). And the platinum can be very tricky, because the death mode is just luck (and a lot of patience).

After 20 years (it was one of the first games I bought for my SNES), I finally finished The Legend of the Mystical Ninja. Didn't hold up quite as well as I would have hoped, but it was still a lot of fun with a terrific soundtrack.

Also going to consider Super Hexagon (iOS) "done" for now. I've definitely fizzled out on that, although it's probably more just me hitting a wall skills-wise with it. It's starting to not feel fun. LOL

Still making my way through Shantae: Risky's Revenge (DSiWare). This is probably my favorite WayForward game. Really fun, but frustrating checkpoints and it's a bit crazy with some of the difficulty. I do like the layered approach that makes you re-explore areas with your new skills.

Edit: Just took a -6 because of the Humble Indie Bundle 6, but hey, it's for a good cause. :)

I read through Ready Player One and finished it last Thursday. Been playing Gungnir ever since but I realized I'm not having fun anymore. First 1/3rd was fun but the last 1/3's difficulty got to a point where I stopped liking it. I don't mind a challenge but when you have enemies in unreachable areas spamming you with AoE, not really fun or fair even. Amazon trade in is taking $8.10 for it which seems really good for a PSP game. I'll watch the ending on youtube.

Puts me at +14, for now

Still no TV gaming for me. I might read, maybe Game of Thrones book 4.

Hey guys, a few months ago I posted here with some screenshots of a backlog website I'm working on. At the moment I'm trying to think of new features, and I had an idea for a 'goals' page. Basically, on your library screen, when you select a game you can choose to add it to your goals list. These goals could be to beat the game, complete it, or just make some progress in it. The page would show how what you have left to do, and what you've done so far. Before I create a finalized design and start programming this, I need to know, does this actually interest anyone? Here's a mockup I made in photoshop:

Oh wow thanks so much mate :) You have no idea how nervous it gets showing this stuff haha.

I know one guy here was interested in statistics, so I've been putting a lot of effort into that, there will be clean, dynamic graphs and charts, showing things like: Games completed over selected time period, money spent on specific consoles, time spent on specific consoles, games owned vs games completed, and plenty more. I can't show any designs for that stuff yet, it's really difficult to make so much information simple and intuitive to navigate.

Thanks again for the praise! :)

I can only imagine. You seem to be off to a great start though! I'm looking forward to seeing it progress.

You said price tracking eh? That is a number I do not wish to know...

^^^ Very nice!

I've been tracking cost on my own doc so that I can see what I've been saving. I'm up about $200 so far.

Finished Shantae: Risky's Revenge (DSiWare) earlier, and wow, what a game. I don't like that you lose *everything* from your last save point if you die, but it sure did teach me to save as much as possible. Only got 26/34 items, but I don't know if I care to re-scour the entire world to find the stuff I couldn't get to without all the abilities. Great game, though. My favorite WayForward title... actually, it's the only one I've finished!

I did buy Rayman Jungle Run (iOS), though, so nothing gained/nothing lost tally-wise.

Finished Rayman Jungle Run (iOS) tonight. Fun and polished, but quite short and for the most part, pretty easy. Loved the Land of the Dead stages. Wish there were more of those, so maybe we'll get some in a future update. 2 no-death achievements left, but I don't know if I'm into the game enough to go for 'em.

Looks and sounds great, though, and for an auto-runner, it's the only one that's really held my interest, so that's saying something, I guess. :) I'd give it a B+.

Something Im really thankful for this thread is that I became more conscious of my spending habits. For this month, I didn't buy a single game and had more time focusing on my backlog and whats more, I saved money!

For my backlog, I was finally able to finish Skyrim, while I liked the gameplay, the questlines were very disappointing compared from the ones in Oblivion, even the main story. Luckily, the lore and the extra story bits from books and from what people are saying made it good for me. I just wish there were more development on the Aldmeri Dominion and even the Forsworn which I am more interested in than any of the questlines in the game. For games I tried to play and finish but didn't like, Tales of Legendia, despite the good soundtrack was really not that good, and after a few hours I just stopped since Im basically not paying attention anymore and couldn't get myself to continue. Eufloria was an impulse install on Steam to at least try out the games Ive been getting from several indie bundles. I liked the concept but it just got very repetitive midway so I stopped.

The biggest surprise for me was playing the Arland trilogy of the Atelier series, they've been there for quite a few months and had little to no progress. When I was playing Rorona, it suddenly just clicked on me that I went and finished the whole trilogy in just a week, and another week to get the Platinum on Meruru and right now Im still craving for more and hopefully also get the Platinum on Totori and Rorona. At first I was wary of the synthesis system, but the more I learned about it, the more depth it shows than what was shown. The characters are also very likeable and the game is focused on character interaction which is what I liked. Theres also the simple and the down to earth plot when it comes to the story. Now I can't wait for Atelier Ayesha next year!

Three Atelier games in a single month? That's impressive!

they're not very long games though, each game is more or less 20hrs in just one playthrough. More if you try to get the other endings and play several times which is what I did with Meruru. Besides, its really been a long time since I really liked a new series I have never played before that I would play it several times in a row.

I thought September would be the month where I changed the trend. Better luck next month, I guess.

Rayman Origins is beat. I liked this game, but I wanted to love it. The 1st third is a little too easy and has just a little creativity. The middle third was great! The last third relied too much on trial and error gameplay (and this is coming from a guy who loves 'Splosion Man!), plus minor imperfections in the precision made way for frustration. I'm like 50 lums away from unlocking the Land of the Livid Dead world and I say no thanks. I've had my fill and then some.

Oh, almost forgot to mention. I didn't buy a new game but I guess it's a +1 in some way. My wife convinced me to play KoA: Reckoning now that she's done with it. So I didn't buy it for me, but it is +1 on my backlog now. I guess I won't include it as a bought (-1) but I will add it to my backloggery total.

Yet another slow gaming month, and it probably won't change anytime soon. I told myself that I would only get Tokyo Jungle for this month, but I ended grabbing Rhythm Paradise Wii since it was £9.95 from Amazon UK. The Worms games were free codes from the Steam thread. As for games I am currently playing: Persona 4 (going to take forever to beat this), Tokyo Jungle (still haven't touched Story Mode) and Ace Attorney: Justice For All (I could probably beat in one or two sittings). October is also the Pokémon month with the Black 2 and White 2 releases. Looking forward to that!

Games bought in September:
Worms Pinball (Steam) [Free code]
Worms Crazy Golf (Steam) [Free code]

The Google Play 25-cent sale hurt, but it did make my line look like a cat. :)

Is it that bad? :( I'm playing it right now, and I'm done with the first two worlds. Got all the Electoons and the Skull Teeth. Not going for medals/trophies, though. If I happen to get them along the way, fine, but I'm not going out of my way to platinum this thing.

Impressions:

Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus HD (4.5/5) - I don't remember this game being so awesome. I mean, I certainly liked it a lot when I played it growing up, but wow it has aged well from a gameplay standpoint. I don't know to what extent the HD'ified content has made this game better, but it did look great. In addition the 3D setting worked fairly well too. It was weird to me that the game felt so short and rapid but at the same time it took some time to complete. I vaguely remembered the story but it was exciting to go through the levels and say I remember that, I forgot that, and "Oh yeah this part is awesome". Sure, I had my moments where I needed to set the controller down and walk away but what platformer doesn't? The fact that I continuously felt compelled to keep playing this game with some other great ones on the back burner is shocking to me. Eventually the pattern of each chapter became obvious but it didn't affect my appreciation of the game. I don't really have much else to say other than it really took me by surprise and that I will definitely be jumping into 2 & 3 very soon. I don't remember them very much/at all so it should be interesting.

fl0w (3.5/5) - I remember playing the demo back when I got my phat PS3 and I recall being interested but not eager to play it. I can say that I got the same feeling here too. The motion control was somewhat neat and the visuals were good as well as the audio. So from a technical stand point it was actually a great game. As for the content/premise I didn't really dig it all that much. It was fun for a while to each creatures but then after a while it got to feeling the same. I appreciated the brevity of the game and that it was fast paced to a degree. I'm happy I played it but will likely return to it for the trophies only if I'm bored. That said, it really was nice to look at.

Flower (4/5) - How does playing as a bunch of flower petals moving through the wind sound? Not that great. My thoughts afterwards: YES PLEASE. Having no clue what the game was when I started playing it I was really great experience to build my own opinion of the game entirely free of outside influence. I was confused at first as to why I was a petal and moving around with motion controls. After having set down the game for 15 minutes to take a break I found myself wanting to pick it right back up and keep floating around. It had a level of relaxation, visual awe, and awesome interactive sound track that really tied it together as an "experience" game. It's hard for me to understand why I enjoyed this so much, because conceptually this sounds like an incredibly boring and pointless game. Once you get going it rapidly grew on me and I really appreciated what Flower is. Definitely on the short side but in retrospect I wouldn't have wanted it to be any longer. For those who haven't played, I absolutely think you should: the last level is incredibly fulfilling.

Motorstorm RC (3.5/5) - Motorstorm RC is actually a perfect game for a portable device. It is filled with short races that range between 10 seconds and a minute and a half. Load times were fairly minimal (minus the startup) which made jumping into races and restarting a near seamless experience. For a free game I am little surprised at the quality and the amount of content there is. I haven't bought any of the DLC cars but I definitely considered it at the price of $0.25. If you have a Vita I'd pick it up. The controls are definitely a little wonky initially so be prepared for a bit of a learning curve. Once you get passed that it is a lot of fun and at times very challenging. I'll probably come back to this one down the road for the trophies.

Journey (5/5) - Brilliant. I was not prepared for the level of amazing that this game brought over the course of 2 hours. This game is literally perfect. Having just recently played ThatGameCompany's past two games I wasn't sure what to expect. Fl0w had been good, Flower better, so Journey seemed to be in place to be the best. While I kept that in the back of my head I was also concerned about the game being overhyped and me setting expectations that it was not supposed to achieve. So I waited until a day where I had nothing better to do and gave it shot. BEST CHOICE EVER. Immediately I was drawn in by the visuals in the sand (it looks too real), but confused and not quite sure what my goal was. So I wandered, was rewarded, and looked to do it again. Every step of the way was an iteration on the previous levels mechanics and visual offerings, to a point where I thought I had reached the coolest part of the game. Well? Nope, I was wrong the next level was even better, and the one after that better than the previous. The mood fluctuated and avoided a continuously upbeat feeling, but still was able to deliver visually and from a gameplay side better than the previous level. The music is fantastic and very much tied to my characters actions, and I would highly recommend playing with the volume up a lot extra(I won't lie,
I was scared shitless the first time one of the rock creatures rose from the ground near me…was not expecting that
. Journey does an amazing job at evoking emotions in a way that is only describable by playing it. I cannot recommend this game enough, this is now a treasure in my collection.

Sly 2: Band of Thieves (4/5) - At first it was a bit of a shock: it felt very different from the first game I had just fallen in love with again. Conceptually it wasn't a huge change but it took me a while to wrap my head around. It felt like the progression was slow and I felt split between spending time in the open-worldy-hub and in the individual missions. I can't say I was a huge fan of the variety in mission types. I felt like some of the stuff added was clumsy or frustrating, this was even more apparent with the missions that included Bentley and Murray. The middle of the story was really a low for me and I just flat out was not liking it. The latter half made up for it and it was actually a lot of fun. Overall the story was pretty good, not quite what the first one was but still good. I missed having all the bottles on each level and I'm annoyed that they replaced that with bottles in the hub world and shop system for buying upgrades. As I was playing I had no idea that I had to assign my power-ups to buttons and as a result I ended up messing around with a plethora of new moves during the last two hours. I think Sly 2 has turned me off the Sly series for a while and I'm going to have to come back to it later.

$ - indicates game was purchased in 2012
+ - inidicated game was a PS+ freebie or was free in some other form, no points are awarded to these titles for completion or ownership.

Notes: Time has been minimal lately and super hard to put time into a game that I know I want to play in 1-2 hour sittings. Hopefully next month will be a little better. Can't believe we are going into the last three months. It is going to be a gaming frenzy with Dishonored, ACIII, AC:L, Halo 4, and PSABR. ROUGH.

Haha! I dropped my controller on my first time through there. Needless to say, it kept me on my toes from that point forward. ;)

Tokyo Jungle- I hesitated for a few days because I might not play it immediately, and I haven't beaten any games this month, but man. This game actually got localized, it deserves a purchase.

The Denpa Men: They Came By Wave- See above.

From the August post:
Because of the (probable) small amount of game purchases, I can dedicate September more to beating games than buying them. Here's hoping I'm back in the positive by October.
THORES YOU NAIVE FOOL

On The Horizon:

I just got my airship in Final Fantasy X, maybe I can finally beat it before getting distracted by other games. Speaking of other games, I'm buying Pokemon White 2 and Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward this month at the very least. Maybe also Code of Princess, which I'm more tentative about. Apparently I'm horrible at predicting how much progress I'll make in a given month, so we'll just see what happens.

^ Sounds like Final Fantasy held your score back for September? If so, it had to get cleared at some point so I'd still call that progress.

It's a very good game and I'm happy I played it; worth the time and money spent. It's just I want to love it, I want it to be something I adore and cherish, and the issues I had with it hold me back from that. Looking at the OT, it seems there were only a handful of people who felt the same as I do so it's not that bad.

Borderlands II - I have about three main story missions to go.

Ratchet & Clank Collection - Beat the first game and moved to the second, which thankfully includes strafing from the outset. Not counting any of this as backlog since I beat these games years ago.

September: 2

I actually made progress this month despite my crazy schedule. Sure I played 95% of two of the games in August but I beat them in September. That's really the only reason I beat anything really. Doesn't help that I started playing S.P.A.Z.

Eternal Sonata (9/12) -- Aside from the battle system and the awesome music (Chopin's stuff at least) the game was a mess. Very liniar and the story is just completely stupid. The cutscenes are all far too long (seriously one character monologues for like ten minutes while dying) and nothing is ever really said.

Ratchet & Clank (9/18) -- I never beat the PS2 version and so thought with the HD collection release I'd finally remedy that. Really great game but it was a little difficult playing without some of the features present in the later games.

Previous games played:
The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass (1/1)
Flight Control HD (1/5)
Dungeons of Dredmor (1/12)
The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks (1/24)

I'm surprised you even count mobile games.

I suppose I could do this retroactively and tally up what games I bought and how many I beat. Shouldn't be too hard, using my memory, how many hours Steam shows I've played a game, and Steam's purchases list. Could be interesting.

Here is my current backlog. Not doing too much damage to it right now since I'm playing so much Dark Souls and some Torchlight II on the side.

I did pretty good in the summer sale, only bought a few games and beat all of them. Its kind of nice because I have most of the classic games I want at this point, I just have to worry about new releases and clean up my backlog.

Still making my way through Rayman Origins (PS3). On World 6 and just completed Climb Out. Fun level! Six Skull Teeth acquired, too (the 5th and 6th ones were surprisingly easy). This game is LONG, even if you're just going for all the Electoons. I can't imagine how long this would take if you were going for the medals/trophies/platinum, too.

Slowing down on the first Borderlands (PC). Waiting for my new video card to arrive before I jump back into PC gaming.

Also started 999 (DS), which is a really nice surprise. Wasn't sure what to expect, but I'm only maybe 2-3 hours into it, and this thing has its hooks in me. Very surprised by the maturity and level of the writing. It's a pleasure to read and soak up.

And Ghibli, are you playing Borderlands in leu of 2 coming out and wanting to play that first?

Yeah, I tend to lag behind a year or so on games... more so on genres that aren't my favorites. I've had Borderlands sitting in Steam since it went on sale for like $7 a while ago, but just hadn't gotten around to it until recently (when everyone else was playing BL2). I'm only level 7 at the moment, but I'm pretty impressed with it. Very different than what I was expecting (in a good way), and the overall style is really nice.

I ended up selling my 360 this month and finished paying off my Wii U pre-order. In that process I got rid of 5 incomplete games (Bionic Commando, Dark Void, Kameo, and Tony Hawk's Pro Skater HD, Prince of Persia: Forgotten Sands). They were all bought this year, so I ended up just deleting them off my bought list.

I beat Rayman Origins! I would say the levels I raged the most on were the ones like Ice-Fishing Folly and Mecha No Mistake. The Land of the Livid Dead was actually not too bad, thanks to the generous checkpoints throughout. Nonexistent ending is nonexistent, though... it's like they didn't even try. :(

I also had some struggles with the controls from time to time. Definitely not as tight (IMO) as DKCR or Super Meat Boy. There were many times where I felt like deaths were because of something odd with the physics or my character not doing what I thought they would based on the buttons being pressed.

Overall, though, BEAUTIFUL game with some really unique/fun music, and some inspired level design, too. I'd give it an A-.

I haven't posted in here for a while, but I've been working on my backlog, although I haven't cleared out as many games as I hoped I would. The only retail game I've bought this year has been Mass Effect 3, which I've finished. I finally cleared out Mario Galaxy 1 and BAstion, and I'm currently working on Dead Space 2...hope to have it done before Halo 4 drops.

So, my current backlog stands at: DS2 (currently playing), AssCreed 2, RDR, Mario Galaxy 2, and Zelda: SS. Pretty good selection.

I also post these reviews on my GameSpot blog, so they run a bit long.

So here's my latest reviews:

Gears of War 3 + DLC Review
Gears 3 is the culmination of a series that, in some ways, defines this generation of consoles; The (still great) graphics, the over-the-top gore, the cover mechanic, the emphasis on co-op (Horde and Beast modes), and a satisfying competitive multiplayer mode. The console gaming market would probably be different today if Gears 1 didn’t become such a massive success back in 2006.

Gears of War 3 concludes the trilogy begun 5yrs before, and may just be EPIC Games’ best title yet. The game is one of the most feature-rich titles out there, with 4 player campaign co-op (that includes an Arcade mode where you can enable fun mutators), Horde and Beast modes, and the standard competitive multiplayer flare (with the Party System!). While Gears 3 may not sway those who didn’t like prequels, there is much to love here for fans of the series.

LOVED

4 Player Bangin’: I’m a huge fan of co-op, and was very happy when EPIC announced Gears 3 would (finally) have 4 player co-op, since there were almost always 4 characters in the squad in Gears 1 & 2. Everything works as expected, and it’s great fun when you have a group of 4 together.

Let Them Come!: First introduced in Gears 2, the Horde Mode has been expanded with tower defense mechanics, and even mutators to increase the craziness. (Insane difficulty is now doable with mutators) Many hours can be spent on Horde mode alone, and much fun can be had. In my view, Horde mode is “the” co-op experience of this generation.

Focused Development: Gears 3 is a prime example of what can be achieved when a developer focuses on a single platform (ie, 1st Party) over the span of 3 games. EPIC delivered a game that looks, runs, and sounds as good as any game on X360/PS3, is feature-rich, and even has dedicated servers for multiplayer. Microsoft needs to secure more 3rd party deals like this if they don’t plan to beef up their 1st part portfolio.

Dedication: EPIC learned from their Gears 2 launch blunder, and brought it for Gears 3. The netcode is improved, but best of all are the dedicated servers for MP. You don’t always play on dedi servers, though. But overall, Gears 3 is a smooth experience online.

RAAM It: The first (and only?) campaign DLC is a step back in time when Gears 1’s villain, General RAAM, is in his prime, ready to fuck some humans up. You split time playing as RAAM tearing through humans and new (and some old) COG soldiers in what turns out to be an entertaining romp that gives a glimpse of what direction the Gears franchise may head in the future.

Stoppin’ & Poppin’: Love or hate it, the Gears series has its own distinct gameplay style. And EPIC refined & polished this formula to a nice shine for Gears 3. Your characters aren’t as “sticky” when he/she comes near a wall. The result is a more fluid sense of gameplay.

HATED

S.O.S.: At launch and for a few months after, the sawed-off shotgun was overpowered, leading to abuse in multiplayer. The blast radius was simply too wide. This wasn’t game-breaking, but very disappointing considering Gears 3 had a public beta that should’ve caught this problem. To EPIC’s credit, they nerfed the SOS in an update, bringing weapon balance back to the game.

Reap What You Sow: Regardless of whether is EPIC’s or Microsoft’s fault (or both), Gears 3 is a prime example of anti-consumer practices being adopted across the industry. Retailer-exclusive preorder bonuses, paid weapon-skin DLC, and (for some) Season Pass. It’s unfortunate.

CONCLUSION

Gears 3 in many ways encapsulates the current generation of console gaming with its feature-rich offering; 4 player online co-op, Players vs AI Horde and Beast co-op modes, the always-appreciated Party System, and 10 player multiplayer. The game does not shy away from its over-the-top action & gore heritage, either. EPIC’s Unreal Engine 3 has been refined to near-perfection, and the game looks and performs exceptional. This game is a showcase of the X360’s potential.

On the other hand, Gears 3 also highlights the negative trends the gaming industry is heading towards with retailer-exclusive DLC and weapon & character skins paid DLC. But at least those were cosmetic DLC.

Mass Effect 3

NOTE: This is a review includes the free Extended Cut DLC for the ending.

Mass Effect 3 concludes one of the most ambitious gaming endeavors yet. The premise was that your decisions/actions in ME1 would carry over to ME2, and again from ME2 over to ME3. While this is all true to an extent, this vision was not fully realized.

Still, ME3 is an enjoyable experience, made even better if you played both ME1 and ME2. Story/companion arcs, inter-species conflicts, and even romantic relationships come to a head in this game. ME3 is the payoff for all the work you’ve done in the previous 2 games.

BioWare even introduced a new co-op mode in Galaxy at War, which is fantastic if you’re a co-op fan. A group of 4 players take on 10 waves of enemies. There’s a good selection of character classes, weapons, and biotic powers to choose from. Matches don’t take long (about 30 minutes at max), and this mode is a good training ground for the campaign.

LOVED

The Shepard Chronicles: Space Jesus returns for one final outing. If you’re invested in your Shepard, then ME3 gives you the closure you’ve been looking for, but you need to download the Extended Cut DLC first (shame it had to be that way). I was disappointed with some decisions the writer(s) made, but ultimately, I was satisfied with the ending. It was, however, awesome to see how your decisions in ME1 & ME2 affected the outcome of ME3. I hope more devs do this next gen.

War, Everywhere: The new Galaxy at War co-op mode is just a blast. Being a huge co-op fan, I put in over 30hrs into GaW before even starting the campaign. The mode is a great way to experiment with the various character classes you may not have otherwise.

It’s Unreal: Like EPIC Games and Gears 3, this is the third round BioWare has had with UE3 and Mass Effect, and it’s a noticeable improvement. The game looks and performs better than ever. This is also evident by how fluid the combat is compared to the prequel. ME3 does not shy away from being an Action RPG.

HATED

Where’s My Crew?: In ME2, you spent nearly the entire game gathering a loyal crew if you wanted the best ending (I did). All of that is thrown away at the beginning of ME3. Your loyal crew is now scattered across the galaxy, doing their own thing. I really like the crew in ME2, and was disappointed BioWare went this route.

A Proper Ending: While the Extended Cut DLC was sorely needed, it’s a damn shame BioWare had to do it in the first place. The whole scenario just screams laziness. But to be fair, the DLC really does give the game a proper ending with the more detailed explanations.
Who’s That?: While the issue was correct later with a patch, if you played ME3 at/near launch, then you had to recreate your Shepard if you had a custom guy/gal. For a series that trumpeted importing your save files from each game, this issue was inexcusable.

CONCLUSION

The Mass Effect trilogy began with so much promise that it was a bit heartbreaking to find out how much of a mess the campaign was at launch. Upon boot-up, you couldn’t import your custom Shepard, your loyal crew from ME2 was nowhere to be found, and the ending reeked of laziness with how open-ended it was. Thankfully, BioWare corrected these issue, but for some, it was too little, too late.

The best surprise for me was the new Galaxy at War co-op mode. I got to play with character classed I would’ve never tried if not for this mode. The matches don’t take long, and BioWare supported this mode with free DLC for a while.

ME3 was a bit difficult for me to score. I was (very) disappointed is some decisions BioWare made, but in the end I still played the game for over 50hrs, and I’ll probably do the DLC later on.

Bayonetta

Bayonetta is what I like to refer to as a “Gamer’s” game. The story doesn’t make any sense, the action is absurd, and there are plenty of boss battles. It’s a throwback to the early days of gaming.

This a game for gamers who enjoy a challenge, and like to see crazy stuff on screen.

LOVED

Lady Ninja Gaiden: Fast paced, over the top action that rewards practice. That is what defines Bayonetta, and her Ninja Gaiden lineage. The game can be a sight to behold if you’re able to master her skillset.

It’s Japanese: Bayonetta is unapologetically Japanese. From how Bayonetta herself is designed, to the bosses she fights, to the nonsensical story, this game is just outright crazy. Just roll with it because the gameplay is indeed fun and challenging.

It’s a Video Game: Platinum Games doesn’t try to pretend Bayonetta is anything other than a video game. Characters with guns on their feet, characters walking on walls, tons of gore, and there’s even bosses with upside down baby faces. It’s a video game, alright, and there’s no shame in it.

HATED

It’s Japanese: It’s no surprise why Bayonetta wasn’t a commercial success in the Western markets. Bayonetta herself is over-the-top sexy, and some of her moves are nearly cringe inducing. The enemy designs are outlandish and sometimes it’s hard to make out what a boss is (upside down baby face, really?).

It's a Video Game: Repeating boss battles, difficulty spikes, the story is hard to follow, and the voice acting is downright terrible. It's a good thing the game doesn't take itself seriously.

CONCLUSION

Bayonetta harkens back to the days when games didn’t take themselves too seriously, and were all about crazy, over-the-top fun. If you can handle a heavy dose of Japanese aesthetics, then there’s plenty of fun to be had. Just make sure to equip the sword once you obtain it.

I still need to review Mario Galaxy 1 and Bastion. I finished those games a while ago, but haven't got around to typing up a review. :(
