My classmate uses an R4 and has never gotten local multiplayer to work either.

R4 sucks for multiplayer...the newer cards like the Cyclo and G6 have near perfect multiplayer functionality though. Its one of the big selling points for the new cards.

How is that? It's not like the games have to include a shoddy modem or anything?

It seems the pirating process does not get all the code, or maybe there are some additional protection from DS that prevent networking from working right. That pirated copies can play single player game, but not local multiplayer (like the Mario Hoops 3 on 3). Not sure about the internet multiplayer.

To CVX,
R4 can play local multiplayer (like Dragon Quest Heroes : Rocket). Maybe your classmate need to upgrade the R4 OS. The latest version (english) that my friend have is V1.11 (or something like that).

I know that there are lots of pirated DS carts. The problem is that they are not as cheap as GBA pirated chart. The pirated ones price is around USD 15 - 20, which is not much different from original, brand new DS carts.
Last I checked, R4 cost around 40$ bundled with a 1GB SD micro. That's a heck of a lot cheaper then GBA rewritable carts used to be in 2003 (70-80$ for tiny 32MB carts).

Non-rewritable pirate carts are a different issue true,(and I know those were huge bussiness in Asia for GBs), but when rewriteable options are this cheap, noone cares.
Heck such alternatives don't even exist on PSP and it does nothing to keep off the piracy.

My girlfriends so called "friend" has an R4 and they do play multiplayer. So does this other girl I know. I feel ashamed for playing multiplayer Cooking Mama 2 from her R4..

What is the cause of the shame :
- playing "girly" game, even though you are "manly" man ?
- playing multiplayer games against other girls / boys ?
- playing it on R4 ?
- playing and enjoying a "non-game" (I don't think it is a non-game, but maybe you thought so) ?

To play the devils advocate here, do you know for a fact it's used for bad things?
R4 has lots of very nice perfectly legal uses - from homebrew and added media functionality that is not present on stock DS, to offering convenience of not lugging all your game carts around, but installing them on a stick instead.
In fact, aside for reduced loadtimes, it offers very similar benefits as custom FW on the other portable, so there's nothing inherently bad about owning one.

Playing multiplayer from an R4. Cooking Mama 2 is a great game, I'd suggest it to anyone..

This is kind of a mean remark, but the fact is, most of these guys and gals don’t drive in real life and have little interest in cars.

I thought that the fact that they don't drive is why they would play a realistic simulator like GT?

It IS possible that they didn't want to waste money marketing a game that the Japanese public doesn't want, you know...
I don't fucking care. The Japanese public just doesn't know it wants this game because of Nintendo's shoddy marketing. I'm almost starting to think they're looking for excuses not to make awesome games like this anymore. I don't seriously believe it yet, but the signs are all pointing in that direction.

If people care for anecdotal evidence (and from what I gather, people at least care to read it), then I can say that this couple at Ginza Bic Camera had a kid holding the SMG case. Then the kid put it back and the parents took MP8 instead (they had Wii Sports and Wii Play in their hands already).

T'was a sad moment. :(

Every region has their embarrassing purchase habits. Europe goes bonkers over Sonic, The Simpsons, and FIFA. Japan is crazy for nongames. America loves shitty, soulless FPS games and teenybopper crap and anime and Sonic, The Simpsons, and nongames.

I thought Symphonia GC had broken 1m actually? Between the US+Japan alone it should be over 800k... maybe Namco's not counting EU sales (since they didn't publish it there?)? I thought I remembered it breaking 200k in EU fairly early on too?

I wish those Tales sales had regional breakdowns...

They are including it, see worldwide with Europe making 3% while Namco didn't publish a single Tales there (2 were Nintendo, 2 Ubisoft).

Are tracking outlets like NPD just overestimating Symphonia US then? I can't imagine it moved less than 150k outside the US+Japan? :/

Alright, from the above post and Japanese Wikipedia we have this:

Ths US numbers will be 4/5 of the remainder of any given game to account for Asia/Famitsu discripencies etc.

These are my own personal estimates, I do not claim them as fact.

Destiny PSX
Total - 1,139,000
Japan - 900,000
US - 191,200

Eternia PS1
Total - 873,000
Japan - 700,000 (Liberal estimate)
US - 138,400

Phantasia GBA
Total - 314,000
Japan - 130,000
US - 147,200

Symphonia GCN
Total - 953,000
Japan - 320,000
US - 530,000 (This was already on Wikipedia)

Eternia PSP
Total - 398,000
Japan - 249,000
Europe - 119,200

Legendia
Total - 397,000
Japan - 340,000
US - 45,600

Abyss
Total - 734,000
Japan - 570,000
US - 131,200

Radiant Mythology
Total - 305,000
Japan - 230,000
US - 60,000

Please tell me you don't really mean this. You'd rather non-Japanese people didn't have access to Japanese games unless they sell as well outside of Japan as in?

I don't think we can discuss NPD data (even if it was posted here though), so I'll leave that number aside. Namco shipped 301k ToS to Japan, 204k to Europe.

This is the good news, right? If it really did 160k already, that means it went on from its opener to fairly quickly sell out its first shipment and (presumably) got reordered.

Thats the amount they shipped until 11th Dec...which looks fairly similar to what sinobi said (150k first shipment). I doubt they could restock in 5 days though, its probably more like 2 weeks.

Must be the case then, as using NPD Symphonia would be well over a million then... what did Namco say to have shipped to NA?

I wonder if these sales maybe don't include budget reprints then? Namco shipped 184k to EU for fiscal 2004... I'd be surprised if the 2005 budget reprint was just 20k then too?

Mmm, I took the 204k from a Namco pdf that seems impossible to find right now with the mess they did while merging Bandai and Namco. I just have it on a txt, so I can't backup either that or the JP shipment, but I'm pretty sure I copied them from the pdfs. I don't remember any budget reprint for Europe though...

Why doesn't any of these links work? :lol

The japanese one works but my Adobe Reader looks fucked and doesn't want to load any of them:

Aaanyway, data posted here comes from:
http://www.bandainamcogames.co.jp/press/release/pdf/53-026.pdf
That I can't open so I went with this:

Using KI's Namco shipment figures, it must be something like...

NA 448k
JP 301k
EU 204k

...then? Was there an official Asian release?

Strange that NPD and all the JP sales trackers over-estimate Symphonia GCN so much then (while they under-represent basically every other Tales according to shipments)? :/

SMG is still raising on amazon.jp chart, honestly i never saw a game which gained positions after positions (it was around #30-35 some week ago, now it's around #18-20) one month and a half since its release...
