NeoGAF Anime of the Year 2014 - Voting Thread

———————————————————————————————————————
Seems like a pretty big consensus on Dandy. I'm curious about the show myself and I'd like to watch as little of the bad stuff as possible. I know tastes come into play here, so one person's recommended list might not represent general consensus.

I got the idea for a voting thread where people pick their top 10 episodes and the points are tallied just like in this thread. I can't make threads myself, but do you guys like the idea or am I overthinking this? Should everyone just follow Woof's recommendations instead?

No.

If I remember correctly, the main Space Dandy thread had lots of people discussing which episodes where the best. It's a pretty good resource. In general, however, I'd recommend you make your own mind up. Comedy is extremely subjective, and every episode of Space Dandy is unique.

To be honest the only two episodes of Dandy I would call outright bad were 6 and 25. Woof's list is a good one but at the point (18 eps) you might just watch it in its entirety. My favourites were probably 4,5,10,11,16,21,22,23. The rest wasn't bad by any means just weaker by varying amounts.

WONDER is amazing, happy to see it mentioned. If you really wanna show the internet that GAF has good taste everyone should watch it and vote for it.

Thanks for the input, guys.

I can't for the life of me find this short. All I've seen is the trailer.

List will be updated with insight, thoughts and random bullshit.
Also this has been an odd year for me, so I've missed a handful of stronger animes that I will watch next year like Ping Pong, Parasyte, Space Dandy and Noragami.

1. Gekkan Shojo Nozaki-kun
2. Shirobako
3. Log Horizon
4. D-Frag
5. Hunter X Hunter (2011)
6. JoJo's Bizzare Adventure Part 3
7. Rage of Bahamut Genesis
8. Silver Spoon S2
9. Yowamushi Pedal
10. Mikakunin de Shinkoukei

1. Barakamon; Because it's good. Go watch it already.
2. Noragami Oh yeah this aired this year too right... Guess it was pretty cool.
3. Nisekoi; Because it's the only other thing i remember watching&finishing this year.

Didn't even watch Barakamon :(

No.

Hell, Space Dandy "comedy" is mostly bad, the best eps imo happened to be the serious ones or with a more somber tone.

Will probably add more to this later but quick top of my head

1. Space Dandy

Space Dandy, the tale of a Dandy guy in space from anime master Wantabe was truly the best show I watched this year. While the first season did start off a bit slow the comedy and action continued to build till the series finale that completely blew me out of the water. My stand out favorite episode was the musical one where Dandy goes back to high school to search for a rare alien, but there were so many great episodes I could easily make a top 10 Space Dandy episode list and may do so later. Go watch Space Dandy if you haven't it's truly the best anime this year.

2. Log Horizon

Log Horizon was a show I picked up because I loved the concept of trapped in an MMO and where as SAO had failed me Log Horizon not only met my expectations but exceeded them in a way I never anticipated. The series blends action, drama, and slice of life in a way that is completely engrossing and makes sense and works really well. Season 1 was fantastic and season 2 has been equally as great so far it's easily the show I look forward to most each week.

3. Gundam Build Fighters

Gundam Build Fighters was another show that kind of came out of nowhere and completely blew me away. YGO is one of my favorite anime series and this show perfectly captures everything I enjoyed about that but replaces card games with mechs and replacing anything with mechs is always a huge improvement. This show is basically a massive advertisement for Gundam toys, yet despite that it has a great cast of character, beautifully animated battles, and fantastic writing that keeps you glued. Even if you aren't a huge gundam fan you can still enjoy this series and I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys great mech action.

4. Kill La Kill

While I dunno if Trigger saved anime with Kill La Kill, I was thoroughly entertained the whole way though and it was a show I kept coming back to after it finished airing. The crazy over the top style could be a bit hard to follow at times but the high energy really sucked me into the zany world and characters. I feel like this series gets bashed too hard by some and I look forward to seeing it again on Toonami next month... now if only I could buy the blu rays without paying a billion dollars ;-;

5. Hunter x Hunter 2011

I'll be honest, I only saw bits and pieces of what aired with HxH this year. I did see the key scenes I wanted to from the manga IE the climax of the Chimera Ant arc and the anime scene hit me in the feels just like the manga did, and the manga made me cry one of the 3 times I have while reading a manga/watching an anime as an adult so I'm going to give HxH credit where it's due. Go watch the Chimera Ant arc it's amazing.

6. JoJo's Bizarre Adventure Stardust Crusaders

JOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOJOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Not sure what else I can say about JJBA, stand of the week never got old for me thanks to the crazy stand powers and crazy battles that happened. It's truly a bizarre and awesome show that must be seen to believe and should be seen by everyone.

7. Rage of Bahamut Genesis

An anime based upon a f2p game sounds like a disaster waiting to happen, but Rage of Bahamut Genesis completely surpasses it's bizarre origin to be something truly unique and fun. The story of Favarro and Kaiser as they get sucked into a quest by a half angel half demon was by far one of the best true blue fantasy anime I've seen in awhile. The show felt a bit rushed at times due to it's length but it was still a fun ride and one I can highly recommend.

8. Parasyte

I'm a huge fan of Carpenter's The Thing and this anime is basically that in shonen form. This series does attempt to modernize the series and it works in some ways but not in others. The story has it's issues at times and certainly feels dated but I enjoy it for that wrinkles and all. The show is at it's best when our hero and migi are interacting their chemistry is great and holds the show together.

9. Yona of the Dawn

This show is slow, very slow, but the adventure of Yona and her reverse harem is a lot of fun to be a part of. Watching Yona slowly evolve from frail princess to battle princess is a lot of fun and the reverse harem antics are pretty down played as to not suffocate the series like I was afraid it would. Come for the adventure and the well written characters, be wary though as this series has the FMA:B/Hellsing ultimate style of serious moment/over the top comedy that some people really don't like. I enjoy that switch but I know it's not very popular.

10. Akame Ga Kill

I'll be straight up, this anime would have been a lot higher had it not been for the filler ending which caused it to almost not be on my list at all. This is really a recommendation for the first 18.5 episodes which follow the manga really well and not the final 5.5 which go into terrible filler ending land. Like Yona it has the same serious tone/comedy moment switch that may turn some people off but I think those comedy tones are needed in Akame Ga Kill because of how dark the story can be at times. When you make a series about assassins where any of the main characters can die at any point you need some moments of humor to not be completely depressed otherwise you get Casshern Sins. Lots of fun action to suck you in, just don't watch the filler ending.

10) Shingeki no Bahamut: Genesis - Strong start but mediocre end. A fairly standard fantasy adventure show, with solid production values. Nothing that really stands out.

9) Pupipo! - Ambitious but not executed as well as I would have hoped. Felt rushed, but that's more or less you get with shorts attempting to do what this did.

8) Yama no Susume 2nd Season - A relaxing story with some eye melting gorgeous animation. The longer episodes gave the characters more room to breath and develop then they ever could in the first season. The second best show this season in terms of how it looked.

7) Norgami - Solid animation, solid action, solid characters and solid plot. Doesn't really do anything exceptional but does enough to keep you invested in the characters till the end.

6) Space Dandy - A lot of highs and lows in terms of episode quality but a lot of very memorable ones overall.

5) Shirobako - A show that makes me smile. You can see the passion that people put into this.

4) Ai Mai Mi: Mousou Catastrophe - An insane show with fast paced humor. Doesn't overwelcome it's stay.

3) Robot Girls Z - A bunch fun robot girls and bullying. Also insane.

2) Mushi-Shi -Next Passage- - Best episodic show bar none. The feeling you get after watching an episode, no other show can replicate it.

1) Ping Pong The Animation - A show that will make you believe in heroes (and animation).

Movies/OVA/Special:
1) The Tale of The Princess Kaguya - Takahata still too good.
2) Harmonie - Realistic school setting with realistic characters.
3) Wind Rises - Something different from Miyazaki, probably the reason why I enjoyed this as much as I did.
4) Mushishi Special: Hihamukage - More Mushishi. Nothing more needs to be said
5) Tamako Love Story - KyoAni can still make good movies regardless of how far they've fallen in tv.

1. Gundam Build Fighters - I wasn't going to list this since it was voted for heavily in last year's poll, but half of it was in 2014 so here it is. It's fuckawesome everything good about Gundam and none of the bad in one series. Hype as shit battles, sunrise mecha animators getting to cut loose on fantasy mobile suit matchups, how can any of this be bad? Guess what: ITS NOT. It rocks your face.

2. Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun - Quite simply, the funniest thing all year. Pacing is good, characters are good, story is a non-concern since it's 4-koma material, everyone is likeable. The flowers gag had me rolling in the foor. Did a good job of translating from off the pages of the manga and onto the screen, and adding..something, instead of it missing..something..from the manga as is often the case. Chiyo rocks.

3. Tonari no Seki-kun - Every bit as good as the hilarious manga and never gets old despite being the same basic premise chapter after chapter. Yokoi is even better animated! Also dat ED

4. Denki-gai no Honya-san - the 2nd funniest show of the year. Pretty faithful to the manga and character interactions and delivery are what make it funny. Really nothing we haven't seen before, and the anime itself isn't technically impressive, but it's hilarious and thus enjoyable.

5. Gundam Build Fighters Try - At the beginning of fall, I would have thought this would be atop my list right behind S1 of Build Fighters. However, it just isn't as good. The characters are flatter and aren't as easy to get fired up about (especially Yuuma, I hope he gets stomped by a Byg Zam), the battles haven't lived up to the hypeness of s1 (although they are plenty awesome themselves), and things just seem to be chugging along at a pleasant clip instead of at an OMFGAWESOME clip like the first show. Maybe the 2nd half of this one will kick it into overdrive.

6. Log Horizon - I got onto the databasedatabase train late, but i'm glad I did. I binged the entire 1st season in like 3 days. Pacing is awesome, it sucks you in and you can't wait to watch the next episode. Princess hnnnnnnngh, and awesome OP and EDs.

7. D-Frag - This really doesn't seem like top 10-list material but here it is. It was completely ridiculous and I couldn't get enough of it.

8. Nisekoi - Fuck the haters. This shit rocks. Yes, we know it's garbage. Yes, we know its derivative slop. Yes, we know its typical harem. Yes, we know the author sucks at writing and just keeps adding girls to create situations. And you know what? Does anyone care? Not me. It's just like the manga - we know its shit, but yet we can't stop reading it. Nor do we want to. It's a guilty pleasure. Don't judge me.

9. Bokura wa Minna Kawaisou - This is a show that I have a feeling isn't going to show up on too many lists. Because it's boring, slow, romance crap, etc etc. but I really loved it. It wasn't too ridiculous (ala Nisekoi) - it has its quirks, but they just add to the charm.
Has the season's best waifu as well. I could have easily put this in the top 5, but felt like I shouldn't. If you haven't seen this watch it right now

LbJth7W.jpg

10. Barakamon - I don't really have much to say about this show other than it was a pleasant watch. Plenty of warm fuzzies, not a lot of ridiculousness, lovable characters. Naru makes the show.

OVAs

1. Girls und Panzer: Kore ga Hontou no Anzio-sen Desu! - I used to build the occasional WWII tank kit here and there when I was in college, and I'm not a hardcore wwII otaku but I do know the gear, played some strat games here and there, etc. so I thought I would hate this moe tank shit and dismissed it as garbage until i got bored earlier this year and checked it out and holy crap it fucking ruled. Since the show was from 2012 it's ineligible, but the OVA came out in summer so I'm listing it here. Lots of action, 5% girls being cute and 95% tanks being AWESOME and SHOOTING AT THINGS. The OVA was basically just a long GuP TV episode which pretty much meant it was the most awesome OVA of the year.

2. Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn - Over the Rainbow - final episode of this most excellent Gundam series. However, the story completely went off the rails into Newtype space-wizard shit and lolz but it was to be expected. It's Gundam. It looked, sounded fantastic and everything else about it was great. Action great, animation great, designs amazing, etc etc.

Notably absent from this list but will be on everyone else's - Shirobako, Aldnoah. Because zzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

Gundam Reconquista in G misses the final cut, surprisingly. It's got great designs and music and mobile suit battles but oh my god is it ever dumb. Tomino2daMax

Here's my votes. Did my best writing my reasoning for each, though for some I just don't have much to say.

TV:

1: Ping-Pong: I'll admit that Ping-Pong is not my favorite Yuasa work; I'm still a huge fan of The Tatami Galaxy. That being said, it's still one of his absolute best. When he has strong source material to work with, Yuasa can work wonders with it. The characters are well realized, and the story itself is interesting. I always was excited to see how each match would turn out. Augmenting this was Yuasa's brand of surrealism, providing gorgeous visual metaphors for the audience. It's a brilliant work, one that I believe is the best of the year.

2: Mushishi: Next Passage: I never would have anticipated that we would get a second season of Mushishi so long after the first, but I am thankful for it. While it's more of the same, in the case of Mushishi that's far from a bad thing. It's still beautiful, and it still leaves you with that sense of wonder that the first season did. This season has some of my favorite stories in Mushishi, with Cushion of Grass standing out as one of my favorite episodes of an anime this year. Overall, it's still Mushishi, and it's still fantastic. Looking forward to the movie next year.

3: Ronja the Robber's Daughter: This might be my surprise of the year! I never thought I'd be putting an all CG anime on my list, let alone one directed by Goro Miyazaki. Ronja's CG may seem offputting at first, but as you watch it you get used to it. There's a lovely show beneath the CG; while a children's show, it's still very well done. Every moment is just a joy to watch. It can jump between being a happy, lighthearted work to being quite intense; the 10th episode demonstrates this quite well. I'm glad to see that Goro is improving as a director, and I look forward to watching more.

4: Space Dandy: This show was quite the mixed bag. The first half was very average, with the only episode that really stood out to me being Eunyoung Choi's. The second half was a massive improvement, with many well-animated and well-written episodes. Episode 21 has to be my favorite anime episode of the entire year! The episodes ranged from abysmal to incredible, so I can't really put it any higher. That being said, despite some of the poor episodes, there's a lot of greatness to be found in this series.

5: Shirobako: A great inside look at the anime industry! It's fascinating alone to see all the work that goes into creating an anime TV series, but it's also a nice drama on top of that. It's refreshing to see adult characters who have more realistic problems, like being unsatisfied with your career, or work related stress. My second favorite of the current season.

6: Monthly Girl's Nozaki-kun: Honestly, I just thought this anime was really funny. The characters were lovable, and the series always found an unexpected way to make me laugh. A lot of fun to watch; I can only hope for a second season.

7: Barakamon: A nice, heartwarming anime. It also managed to be quite funny at times. It was great seeing the main character mature throughout the series.

8: Free! Eternal Summer: I found this to be a nice improvement over the first season. There was still plenty of drama, but it didn't feel as unwarranted as the first season. It was nice seeing the characters again, and I was happy that Nitori got lots of screentime. He went from a minor character to a supporting one, so that was nice.

9: Is the Order a Rabbit?: Probably the cutest show of the year. It had plenty of bunnies, and I love bunnies! The music was really nice too, very relaxing. I love it when slice of life shows like this are just laid back and relaxing, they're great to unwind to. This was one of those.

10: Hanayamata: The characters were cute, and I loved the dance scenes! The drama feels very forced, though. It would have been better if it took itself less seriously and just focused on having fun.

Film/OVA/Short:

1: The Tale of the Princess Kaguya: This might be my favorite Takahata film. I think I might like it even more than Only Yesterday! I still need to think it over more, and give it another watch to be sure. What I am certain of is that this is one of Ghibli's best works, and one of my favorite animated films of all time. It's not only beautiful to look at, but the writing is beautiful as well; it brought me to tears a number of times throughout its duration. It's an absolutely incredible movie that ought to be seen by any fan of animation.

2: Wonder: This is a short that will appeal mostly to fans of animation as an art-form. It's eight minutes of pure, psychedelic animation, and it's amazing! It's all very fluid and creative. I mentioned this in the Fall thread, but to me it's works like this that show the full potential of what animation can do. A work of pure imagination.

3: The Wind Rises: It's not Miyazaki's best movie, but I feel that it was a great note to end his career on (if his film-making career is in fact ending). As many people have said, it's a movie that seems to reflect the Miyazaki's own nature; I think that there's some of his personality to be found within Jiro. Speaking of Jiro, I'm not fond of either of his voice actors; I found Joesph Gordon Levitt to be very flat in the role, and Anno to be even flatter. However, I'd have to recommend giving the English dub a watch just for a surprising and charismatic performance from Werner Herzog.

4: 20min Walk From Nishi-Ogikubo Station, 2 Bedrooms, Living Room, Dining Room, Kitchen, 2mos Deposit, No Pets Allowed: My favorite of the Animator Expo shorts so far! I don't think I'd call this short Kafkaesque, even if the concept resembles The Metamorphosis on the surface. Still, it's wonderfully animated and very exciting!

5: Puella Magi Madoka Magica: Rebellion: Yeah, I liked it! Was it necessary? No, the TV series ended everything just fine. Even so, I still liked it! Gekidan Inu Curry's work here is the best it's ever been; visually it looks great. I loved seeing the characters return, and many of them showed further development from the TV series. The soundtrack was great, as usual. I even liked the ending! It shocked me, for sure, but I thought it made sense. I'm looking forward to more from this franchise, though I'm not sure if they'll ever top the TV series.

6: Lupin III: Jigen Daisuke's Gravestone: I actually enjoyed Fujiko Mine, despite its flaws. The style was great, and the soundtrack was great, and many of the episodes were... interesting, at least. This movie focuses a lot of the strengths of the TV series, with few of its weaknesses. Great animation, exciting action scenes, and a great conclusion; it's a bit more serious, but still definitely a Lupin series! That weird scene with Fujiko was uncomfortable and unnecessary, though.

7: Me!Me!Me!: A very... colorful short. A very surprising one too. I couldn't believe what I was watching. I thought it was just smut at first, but as it became more disturbing I got more interested. Very NSFW, but very well done.

I wish I could be as frank as you and put in stuff just because. Cause I wanted to fit Gundam, Saki, Supernatural Battles, and Engaged into my list but couldn't. Wait was WUG! This year? Dang, that too~. Actually yes I'm bumping something for Saki.

I took a lot of time deciding my top 10. I'm offended, And you think I didn't think about my ballots properly and shit?

just kidding about all that, actually yeah it was straightforward. I shuffled names and numbers around until I felt comfortable with what I had. >_>

dat Saki love. good stuff.

Wow, ohlawd. I'm disappointed. No P4GA... ;-;

Kidding! Great list, great write-up. I'm just getting back into anime; you and everyone here have some great suggestions, so I'm looking forward to giving them a shot.

thankies.

I had about 30 anime to pick from for my top 10 list and four for the HMs. P4GA didn't make it and a bunch of others didn't either ;_;

Yeah. My list is meant personally as shortening the season by a bit if you don't want to watch the whole series and only want to watch the good to amazing episodes as there were some bads. Others in the Space Dandy and the anime thread might recommend only like 50% of the episodes but then you'd be missing what I consider some other more than decent episodes. Then again somebody might've liked the whole thing.

So I guess your best bet if you're interested in the show is to watch it all though keep in mind that there are some bad episodes, especially in the first half.

From what I've watched, will probably edit and put in reasons when I actually get time to watch more shit.

1. Space Dandy
2. Hunter x Hunter
3. JoJo
4. Noragami
5. Kuroko

and… shit that's it for now.

1.Hunter x Hunter (best anime since anime was invented)

Noragami
Nagi no Asukara
Kill la Kill
Mahoku
One Week Friends
No Game No Life
Selector Infected
Fate/kaleid liner PRISMA ILLYA 2wei!
Sword Art Online
Knights of Sidonia

Having a tough time picking between Nagi no Asukara and Dandy for number 1.
Anime that I may or may not finish watching before the deadline:

Samurai Flamenco
Ping Pong
Barakamon
Black Butler

Seeing your tastes you should definitely give a watch to Barakamon it's been listed by many people in here as a top 10. Ping Pong is the other show you should definitely watch as it's most likely AnimeGAF's top anime of the year.

Well, this years voting looks surprisingly messy. Looks like we're going to get a fairly interesting set of results.

1. Ping Pong

2. Silver Spoon S2

3. Space Dandy

4. Barakamon

5. Haikyu!!

6. No Game No Life

7. Monthly Girls' Nozaki-kun

8. D-Frag

9. Rage of Bahamut Genesis

10. Baby Steps

(ones that didn't make it)

Akame Ga Kill - It was OK, but all discussion turned into 'omg deathflagzz!!' every episode which became boring. Emotional weight is lost when you basically make a 'who's going to die next' show

Terror in Resonance - Great music and animation. I just didn't care about any of the characters or anything that was going on apart from the lead cop.

Tokyo Ghoul - Had some really strong episodes, but a lot of weak ones. Will be there for S2

Free! S2 - I don't watch free! for lists, i watch it for ME.

Sabagebu! - Got edged out by nozaki and d-frag, but still a really strong comedy.

Kuroko S2 - Fun, but it's all a bit silly. I'm a Haikyu!! man.

Chuunibyou S2 - Damn that relationship is moving a mile a minute. They even kissed.

Black Bullet - Tonally all over the fucking place. I did finish it, so i guess thats a compliment.

Gokukoku no Brynhildr - Again, i finished it. No idea why. (Watched for Kazumi)

Hitsugi no Chaika - Pretty standard fantasy stuff, but very enjoyable. Didn't make the list because it didn't exactly blow me away. (Watched for Chaika)

Didn't vote for stuff that aired into this year like HxH and Space Brothers. It would be unfair, they are my favourite animes ever.

Top 10
1)Parasyte - I really have a hard time deciding either this or Log Horizon.
2)Attack on Bahamut : Genesis - Very creative and original for a F2P card game not to mention the godly MAPPA visuals.
3)Noragami - One of the better executed Bones shows plus it has Taku Iwasaki.
4)Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki Kun - A very good comedy with a large cast which is hilarious.
5)Sabagebu! - It's basically airsoft survival club mix with Gintama and Nichibrosgals, Momoka is a scumbag who carries the show.
6)Barakamon - A really good good with a big warming heart to watch.
7)Tamako Love Story - A really well done conclusion to KyoAni's Tamako Market and it also proves that the useless piece of shit bird is not vital to the show at all.
8)Inari Konkon Koi Iroha - Very sweet adolescent love.
9)Jojo Bizarre Adventures Part 3 : Stardust Crusaders - Stand of the week isn't exactly good for a 4 cour series despite it being Jojo.
10)Space Dandy - Alot of hit and miss episodes but the strongest thing of the show is the soundtracks which is very diverse.

Honorable mentions:
ShiroBako - A interesting look into the anime industry.
Log Horizon - If it wasn't for Akatsuki arc that drags it down and partly due to it being DEEN, it would have been on my #1 vote.
Fate/Stay Night Unlimited Blade Works - It's only on this mention because it's godly animations and production. Dat Ufotable touch.
Aldnoah Zero - Inaho rules, Slaine drools. It's on this mention due to wrong reasons.
No Game No Life - Despite the fanservice but the games, strategies and plotting are creative and hax.
Your Lie in April - Tried to be the next Nodame but fall flat due to mommy issues and forced drama but it's still a ok show if it wasn't for the visuals and production.
When Supernatural Battles Became Commonplace - A ok Trigger show but it gets a mention because the awesome Hayami Saori rant

Dishonorable mentions:
Chūnibyō demo Koi ga Shitai! Ren - A pointless KyoAni Trash sequel.
Cross Ange - Another of Sunrise poor attempt of a orginal mech show with Fukuda's Trash take with dragons.
Sword Art Online 2 - 100% pure Trash.
Amagi Brillant Park - Another KyoAni Trash.
Psycho Pass 2 - Edgiest Trash.
Mahouka - Onii-Sama's Trash is a another girl's treasure.

Anime series:

1. Kill La Kill: Literally saved anime for me for the year of 2014.

2: Gin no Saji S2: The second season of this fish out of water story. He get to see Hachiken progress in his relationship with his crush, fellow class-mates and his rather aloof parents all the while still settling in with the life and issues surrounding going to a farming high school. I've always been a huge huge of fish out of water stories and this one hits all the right points with its comedy and serious moments.

3: Hanamonogatari: Easily my favorite of the -monogatari series yet. Kaiki's and Kanbaru easily take the cake here with their interactions with each other. Was awesome to learn so much about Kanbaru and her way of dealing with the situation she found herself in and the twist in the story that I honestly didn't see coming.

4. Tsukimonogatari: This was everything I expected it to be and more and I can't complain about that. If you don't like this series very long winded, deep and roundabout conversations, lewd interactions with the girls and the Shinobu and Ononoki being cute, then you still won't like this series. If ya do then here you go there's more of that here. At the end of it all I came away liking Ononoki more because it showed to a certain extent she has her own agency and thoughts about things despite being a doll and I think it a way it moved her and Ararararagi closer together because he learned something important about her as well.

5: Witch Craft Works: This show is just pure distilled fun. MC is constantly being protect by his over-hearing female protector from other witches all after some magical power he has hidden inside him. What make this show work are the amazing fight sequences, high production values, the legit funny as time comedy the the huge cast of characters who all have their motivations and own personalities with each serving an important role to story. The series of episodes involving the withc known as Weekend was probably my favorite series of episodes of the year. Show also gets my Ending theme of the year as well.

6: Log Horizon: Probably my favorite trapped in an MMO story I've seen. Hits all the right notes with the players adapting to their new lives, the world buliding of dealing with their new lives the the in dept attention paid to the gameplay elements of MMOs that many other shows of it type sometimes ignore for the sake of making certain characters more unique than others.

7: Noragami: The story of Yato, a poor god of war, as he tries to help his two young charges with their issues, the issues of those who come to him for help all the while dealing with his own complicated past. Mixes the right amount of comedy, character development and phantom fighting. Honestly one of my bigger surprises this year.

8: Saki: The Nationals: Simply put teams of high school girls playing Mahjong with supernatural elements thrown in. But now the story has moved onto the national tournament. Though there is a MC she isn't the focus. In fact the story focuses on all the characters, teams and their motivations for winning the tournament, their interpersonal relationships with each other and all the while keeping the game of mahjong interesting with the advanced strategies the characters come up to overcome other's natural talents or supernatural abilities.

9: Selector Infected/spread WIXOSS: Combination of a dangerous children's card game and the classic be careful what you wish for. Seeing the girls deal with, overcome or fall victim to the rules of the games was pretty entertaining and I rather enjoyed the very dark and depressing atmosphere.

10: Knights of Sidonia: I'm fully aware that the some may be put of by the CGI and frame rate, but what hooked me were the space battles and the methods the pilots used to overcome the aliens and the fact that the show didn't seem make any significant character safe from death.

Honorable mentions:
Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya
Fate/stay night
Gundam Build Fighters series
Jinsei
Rail Wars!

Film/OVA/Short:

1: Madoka Rebellion: This movie was a surprise and I felt was a worthwhile addition after the series. Provided an explanation for some things I had questions about at the end of the series and was a visual and storytelling treat for me with a ending that I was honestly shocked to watch.

2: ME!ME!ME!: Yea yea the tits and ass were very nice and I won't deny that. But its the message the short tells is the interesting thing to note here and if tits and ass were needed to help do that, so be it.

1. Ping Pong: The Animation ; This show being my first Yuasa title i've ever watched, I'm absolutely pleased to say that this anime blew away my expectations and provided more. A colourful ensemble of characters accompanying wonderfully detailed environments. Amazing music, some wonderful and memorable lines. And the ending is something I never would've expected. It is, without a doubt my anime of the year.

2. Barakamon ; I'd think this anime is something out of my comfort zone, but honestly the show oozes with charm. it's 'home-y' in a sense. The characters and environment feel very familiar to me. incredibly pleasant to watch.

3. JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders ; OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH MYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOODDD HORRRRRRRRRRRRRRY SHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEET SANADA BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEETCH

4. Space Dandy ; I knew this show was gonna be a stopper from it's first season, and it's second season did more than enough to entertain me. It's bizarre and exciting, and some of the animation work is fantastic, as expected of the studio. Great, great anime.

I didn't finish a lot of anime this year...but I watched a ton...if that makes sense...

1. Space Dandy: I liked every episode. I laughed, I cried and the visuals were amazing. Its not for everyone but I really enjoyed it.

2. KLK: Despite a pretty poor middle there and too many returns to status quo, when KLK was on...it was ON. Awesome soundtrack with bits of awesome animation (not all the time...geez), I really enjoyed it.

3. JoJo: Stardust Crusaders: Haven't finished it...was waiting for it to "end" so I can marathon it..because JoJo is so fucking hype that waiting weeks in between is torture. wooo.

4.Mekakucity Actors: wat. I like the music and visuals....the plot...wat

5. Noragami: Going through this on Netflix. Nice blend of action and comedy. Nice Visuals.

6. Sabagubu! - Features a MC that doesn't take no shit.

7. Shingeki no Bahamut Genesis: Haven't finished but the visuals alone are worth admission. MC seems interesting too...a nice change of pace.

Movies/OVAs:

1. DBZ: Battle of the Gods: Nostalgia Reasons Only.....
2. Madoka Rebellion: wat...wait...waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat. Dat ending. Not sure if it is bad or amazing...or both.

Going to look through this thread for stuff I obviously missed.

So... this thread makes me realize that I need to watch a lot more anime. Nevertheless I think my #1 spot is pretty clear.

1. Kill la Kill

Will post my comments on it later.

1. Jojo's Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders; It's Jojo! It's awesome.
2. Hunter X Hunter; good bye sweet prince; hopefully a new anime happens whenever new material comes out ;-;
3. Ping Pong;

1. Free! Eternal Summer
Free! Eternal Summer maintains the definitively good storytelling that made its first season fantastic. With well-written drama elements in its storytelling that made it go above and beyond the calling for school sports drama series of friendship, it became one of the best anime ever created. The focus on the characters and their struggles with dealing with the inevitable future of going their separate ways and how to reach their dreams was a subject that many series handle in a weird manner. Fortunately, the writers of Free! Eternal Summer made the story feel realistic and emotional. It actually felt believable that they would struggle with the outcomes and beat around the bush at times with each other in regards to how they will deal with a future that is different than how they live in the present. This great take on the story and drama, along with the creative soundtrack and delicious character designs with pleasing visuals, managed to easily reach the apex of quality entertainment, wholly defining the year as a whole for the entire industry. Generations will look back on Free! and remark upon how so few have striven and failed to be as good as it.

2. Future Card Buddyfight! [EngDub]
Bushiroad's pursuit of introducing another cardgame after the success of the Cardfight! Vanguard property exploded proved to be a worthwhile endeavor. Buddyfight was a bit of a more wacky and friendship filled experience than Vanguard and even Yu-Gi-Oh! but remained incredibly fun, creative, and inspirational. The visuals and sound were and are some of its best parts enhancing the card game experience. The card game experience is enhanced via the dynamic camera, that rotates around characters as they rush unto the field to unleash their powerful finishers, the hi-ougis of sorts in this universe. Every duel is highly exciting because of how the players themselves get to equip items and even ride their buddies into battle. This is an evolution for Bushiroad as Cardfight! Vanguard never possessed such an element of motion. Its a fantastic English dub experience and anime overall. Its rather perfect,

3. Cardfight! Vanguard: Link Joker [EngDub]
Every season of Cardfight!! Vanguard is better than the other. This third season of Vanguard was like the previous. That is to say, each season was exceptionally energizing and fun. Link Joker featured the same elements that made the previous Cardfight! Vanguard series great. However this time it evolved in a new way. The Link Joker clan with its power to Reverse others was a fantastic development to make this season feel much different than the others. With new feelings for some characters offering great insights into them, the series excelled on both a dramatic story approach and fantastic cardfighting.

4. Yu-Gi-Oh! Arc-V
Action Duels have brought Yu-Gi-Oh! back into relevancy in this new age. The Solid Vision with mass system, along with many characters striving for entertaining the masses that watch these action duels enabled Yu-Gi-Oh! ARC-V to be as competitively exciting as Buddyfight and Cardfight! Vanguard for me. The focus on fast paced dueling that involves the duelists that can ride their duel monsters as they duel and search the field for action cards made this an incredibly fresh experience. Never before has dueling been more intense than this. One recent episode highlighted the fast paced nature of it as characters dived to grab action cards as they jumped from ledge to ledge on the environment as it fell. I must also say that the story is on a different level as well. The struggle of characters striving to entertain while trying to succeed helped round out the currently unfolding serious multiworld plotline seen never before in Yu-Gi-Oh!. The story may only be opening up, but the entire ride has felt quite intelligent, focused, phenomenal, and epic. It is THE best Yu-Gi-Oh! thus far.

5. Buddy Complex
I never expected that 2014 would bring about a new mecha that could dethrone lasts years hit mecha, Valvrave. Valvrave was a mecha that completely changed the genre. Now, just one year later Buddycom did the same thing. With my favorite composer lending excellent musics, along with witty yet exciting storytelling, fantastic character designs, and marvelous mecha designs, Buddy Complex is a mecha that stands about 95% of other ones. Its the only one that has managed to do a great story of budding friendship along with a deeply thought-out and easy to follow time divergence situation. Because of this and other minor things that would be too numerous to deal, this was a great anime. Connection Dio and Acception Aoba were two of the most defining phrases of the year and will be for years to come.

6. Majinbone

Best Toei anime ever. Giving KENN the lead role of Shougo was a fantastic decision as it helped to make the anime instantly approachable and lovable. It may seem like a kids toy show on the surface but it ended up being far deeper than I could ever imagine. If there is any anime that one must view on a 60inch + class HDTV it is this one. The Cocoon moments with the fast paced action of all the Bones is choreographed amazingly. It feels even better than a video game could ever make it.

7. Hamatora

Rarely do we have mystery anime. However, unlike what that statement would mean on the surface (that is, that anime cant do mystery well), Hamatora was one of the better written and thoughtful anime. Sure characters took many of the plots in a light hearted manner or there were more threads for plot going than one could imagine, but by the time of Re:Hamatora, the story sorted itself out and gave us an "Ah ha" moment. Even then, the ending was still unpredictable and unexciting, a true reward for the attentive viewer.

8. Haikyuu!!

A phenomenal sports series that unfortunately only suffered for stopping before the series truly took off. Many of my favorite parts of the manga came after the adapted portions. Regardless, if the same high level of polish is brought to the table for the second season then it is inevitable that Haikyuu!! may be able to be one of the top three anime of 2015. Hopefully they do select better songs and do a more powerful second ending visuals.

9. Shounen Hollywood: Holly Stage for 49

Shonen Hollywood may not be as refined or as out there at times like the superior idol anime of our generation, Uta no Prince Sama: Maji Love, but it manages to offer an alternate take on idols. The anime felt like a more realistic attempt at the idol life. Seeing these high school age kids attempt to break into the industry through this seemingly bumbling production company led to many lessons to be learned for both them and others. I found myself cheering them on as they embraced feelings of embarrassment, success, and failure.

Tomii and Kira are the best singers. Eternally never ever was best song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zo56DdARQjE

10. Herobank

Most hilarious anime of the year. The herobutt moments are hilarious, Kaito's silly antics in regards to every event going on while being united for friendship and doing things for Free smiles is a perfect sight to see at the morning hour. The first 25 episodes were perfect in every way. Excellent action with the best friend turned rival was a plot that I always love. Meanwhile second half, while even acknowledging Kaito x Nagare as canon, even introduced a new rival/best friend for Kaito giving us a canon OT3. In terms of plot it is just as good with going to new locations, new herosuits, and new companions. Herobank is the best of these type of shows in the morning. I wish they would bring the 3DS game out here.

Honorable Mention
Nagi-Asu: A Lull in the Sea: Beautiful Drama and music
Glasslip: Beautiful story and character interactions.
Mekaku City Actors: Delightful
M3: Sono Kuroki Hagane: Dark yet somehow entertaining. SABLE for best ED of the year.
Laughing Under the Clouds: Best anime of Fall 2014
Dragon Collection & Oreca Battle: Card game action shorts are pretty intriguing, definitely will be on my 2015 list

Tribe Cool Crew: Fun tone, fun dancing, fun characters
Samurai Flamenco: Best closing episodes of the year, unforgettable
Strange+: Best Nii-san!!!!
Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei: if only the anime got further, nine schools was executed perfectly.

Well I've watched Ping Pong the animation from all the high praise and am so pumped about how great it was. But that seems to be all the anime I will be watching this year because that show seems like an outlier compared to other things being listed. besides Princess Kaguya coming out pretty soon to blu-ray I'm Kinda bummed. I just want more of what I just watched.

also ME!ME!ME! was pretty intense and I'm glad I experienced that.

Give Pupipo a shot. It's no Ping Pong, but it has its own merits.

Certain episodes of Space Dandy are worth watching.

Watch Tatami Galaxy for more Yuasa goodness.

Might try Space Dandy again but was very turned off from everything I saw originally. A more serious tone episode may be more up my alley.

Tatami Galaxy I do need to watch. Ping Pong immediately made me think of Mind Game, which is one of my favorites, so I'm def willing to watch anything more by the same person involved

and Pupipo doesn't seem like something I'd usually watch but I'll give the first few episodes a try.

I'm not going to call it revisionist history or something (I'm wanting for the actual right term but I'm coming up with a bit of a blank) but it feels weird to see people feel as if 85+% of Dandy episodes didn't range between great to some of the best half hours of anime made in recent history (with the small 15% or so remainder being just ok). As an anthology you are going to get some subjective degrees of quality fluctuation but overall the show was PACKED with gold.

1. Space Dandy

I think that's the only anime from this year I watched.

Fan-damn-tastic.

There are a couple, but don't ever look for an overarching plot. It's episodic as hell.

Yeah, haha. Even with the first season I enjoyed every episode minus maybe two. And those were pretty decent themselves.

I think the Undies vs. Vests and trial episodes were the only ones I think were bad, and Undies vs. Vests had dat ending sequence.
