LTTP: 999 - 9 Hours 9 Persons 9 Doors

I put this game down the first time I played it, but I picked it up again and damn I'm engaged.

Just wish this right button fast-forward feature would kick in when it's supposed to. I beat the game and got my first ending (BAD END
and it sure was scary
). I thought holding the right button sped through text you've read in previous playthroughs.

But yeah. 999. I love it.

That's weird that it's not working. Do you have an icon on your save screen now? (Also, which BAD END)?

In any event, you're in for a hell of ride.

Oh hey, look at the timing, I literally finished the true ending for the first time a few hours ago.

My head hurts.

I've already moved on to VLR, the text movement is so much better.

I seen the tweet for this thread and honestly thought you may have made it.

Excellent series and I'm jealous you guys get to experience them for the first time again.

I just beat it not long ago myself. Excellent game. I'll pick up VLR as soon as I am able.

BTW,
what was up with the final puzzle? A sudoku puzzle? c'mon! One of only two times I pulled up GameFAQS! (The other time was the very first puzzle, lol)

Also,
was anyone else shocked that Lotus was divorced with two kids? When people started making age jokes, I didn't understand it. Gameplay and story segregation I guess...

I really, really fucking love this game. I sat up all night playing it to get the last ending, it was incredible.

I can't wait to try out the sequel eventually.

I tired hard to love this game but stupid characters boring text is bored me to death.

The over dramatic writing even when you are opening a door or doing simple tasks is so annoying. And that June! i hated her with passion. Stupid fragile animu girls urgh.

I'm just going to put everything following this text in spoiler tags.

The only bad ending I got was pretty violent...
when Clover turns into a murderer

I started a new game with the 'memories' and now I'm making completely different choices. I just went into the door 9 dies in and did the piano/casino puzzles. Now I've reached the big hospital room and I can't seem to fastforward when Seven is talking about The Gigantic.

And just to be nice, folks, if we're discussing spoilers, can we be extra careful? I honestly do believe there's a ton to see in this game and I don't wanna read up on anything involving other endings/choices.

I saw the tweet and thought "Perfect! now I don't have to make one, or bump one of the other three or four threads."

One thing I noticed was how much of the game there was you don't see by getting some endings, or going through certain doors.

I would stick with it, even if you dislike the characters early on. NO ONE is what they seem.

If there's even a subtle difference in the scene, it won't let you skip.

Best game i played this year by the way. The safe and true endings were two of the most well written things I've experienced in video games.

One thing about the fast-forward in both this game and VLR is that it only fastforwards if you're a dialogue segment it counts you as having already seen. If a choice changes a couple of words on the screen, even if most of it you saw on a prior playthrough and the actual meaning is the exact same, it won't fast-forward through it. This leads to some sections of text you'll see in almost-identical form two or three times as you play through over and over. So if fast forward usually works, but in this one situation it doesn't, it's because you're in a slightly different text section than previous.

Just make sure to get the true ending no matter what. If you end up getting the other 5 endings and quitting, you've really only played half the game

Funnily enough, I hated June as well at the start and she turned out to be one of my favourite characters.

I played few hours. Finished that puzzle where u switch the body parts of dolls. I have been trying to seperate myself form June at all costs lol.

Then i got bored cuz they talk a LOT...and puzzles werent that much of a challenge so far. Checked the story in wikipedia few days ago oh man..It sounds like a MGS story lol

Last puzzle spoilers.

Yeah, I mean it fits with the whole nonary theme but that did seem really out of place next to puzzles that were more fresh and unconventional.

If you've read the synopsis, just skip it and move on to VLR. Puzzles are more challenging...not amazing, but a big improvement over 999. Dialogue is not nearly as verbose during the escape segments. You can skip from one timeline to another freely and thus never have to replay any puzzles. Despite the style which isn't quite as captivating, it's a far better designed game.

The first play through will take about 9-10 hours. After that, if you are using the text skip feature, each subsequent play through will be about 5-6 hours. (Depending on how quick you are with the puzzles.) When you get to the final path, you can add another 2-3 hours.

The one flaw with 999 is that you have to replay puzzle rooms each time you play the game, so you'll be seeing certain puzzle rooms (mainly the first three) multiple times. But once you know the solutions, it takes only a couple minutes to go through them again.

But make no mistake, just getting one or a few of the endings is not beating the game, this game uses the multiple ending mechanic in a way that no other game has ever done before to my knowledge. Everything must be experienced to get the full impact of the game, and once you get into it, you'll want to see everything this game has to show you. (And the payoff for being thorough is legendary.)

do the endings change the plot outcomes or do you just see different parts of the same conclusion?

That's disrespectful to the absurdity of MGS's plots. I agree it's a bit wonky but the way it was told made it very enjoyable for me (to the point that it's my favorite videogame story). So far VLR is even better in that respect, though the tension is not as high.

They're not really different 'endings' as far as I'm concerned, the only actual end is the True end, the rest are more like different chapters. Needless to say, if you stop playing before the True ending then you've not finished!

Am I the only one who thinks 999 is a lot better than VLR? I'm 17 hours in and I've only gotten one ending, so I know I probably should reserve judgement until the reveals hit, but my main gripe with it is that I just don't care. The characters are interesting sure, but there's nothing intriguing or likeable about them. I'm not invested in their fates. And the ability to jump around actually hurts the story imo. I keep finding myself struggling to remember the details of my current timeline or what Sigma is supposed to care about because there is so much jumping around. Also the map showing me where I'm going is painstakingly slow to the point where I dread when Sigma has to leave a room.

Naw, I preferred 999 too. Mostly because in VLR
it ends on a cliffhanger and leaves the player unsatisfied.
The tension is much more interesting in 999, and the music is better imo and used more appropriately to set atmosphere, especially the main theme. Oddly enough, I liked the verbose dialogue, it helped immerse me. The reveal in VLR just wasn't as shocking to me either.

The jumping on the flow chart is actually good I think, not the map and door thing though. Both games are amazing either way.

man video games were feeling pretty stale until someone on gaf recommended 999 / VLR to me. Got the true ending to 999 last night, starting the sequel tonight. Honestly one of the best games I've ever played and I have really high hopes for the Zero Escape series. Thanks gaffers, I love you guys
