PS4 and Xbox One posted incredible sales figures in the UK, with Sony coming out on top.

PlayStation 4 has sold 530,000 units in the UK in just five weeks, according to ERA (using Chart-Track data), while Xbox One has sold 364,000 units. It's a significant gap between the two competitors, although both numbers are significantly higher than any previous console launch.

PS4 hardware sales generated £181.8m on the UK High Street, while Xbox One made £144.5m. Together, that means the UK market made over £326m from next-gen console sales.

ERA director general Kim Bayley said, “Games continues to deliver digital sales strongly, but it was disappointing that Xbox One and PS4 came so late in 2013 and then huge demand meant stock sold out quickly. Retailers will be working hard in 2014 to maintain the sales momentum of these two great new pieces of kit.”

Last gen, Microsoft had a pretty good sized lead over Sony in the U.K.

They can't afford to split the US and UK with Sony. They aren't likely to flip mainland Europe in the next few years and Japan is a lost cause for them. Simply being competitive in the United States and the UK isn't good enough.

damn great sales for both consoles.

poor wii u

Goddamn. Kind've disproves the (albeit ridiculous) theory that Sony was holding back supply or whatever because its so hard to get. That is enormous supply for the UK and makes me think the numbers in the US for December might be huge too.

Also a great start for MS, but I think the gap is about to accelerate like crazy in the new year since I believe demand has dried right up.

well done sony. I wonder how many who wanted a particular console had to get something else due to lack of console in the shop

Do Americans play more games or have more expendable income? Or is this a PC territory?

We talk so much about numbers, and in comparison this seems small. Then I think about a factory making thousands of consoles and this seems like a ton.

Those are great numbers for both. No surprises that PS4 outsold it by that margin.

All the "brand loyalty" talk was pure bullshit, and anyone who has followed this stuff for years knows it, most consumers are not loyal to these companies, werent with Sony in regards to PS2->PS3, not to Nintendo SNES->N64, Wii->Wii U, so why would they be loyal to Xbox all of a sudden?

So PS4 is 50% more powerful in terms of sales and graphics in the UK.

Not counting the fact that PS4 released a week later as well, and obviously supply constrained.

US sales gonna be interesting

The XB1 launch 1 week earlier than PS4 right?

I remember PS4 has something like 250K on first week whereas XB1 has 150k. Now that the difference is 166,000 so it implies the average sales favors PS4? Major Nelson?

What. In comparison this is like selling 3 million PS4s or 2 million XBOnes in the US. Which would be ridiculously high.

Really good numbers for both, though Microsoft must be pretty disappointed - 360 outsold the PS3 by quite a margin here.

Had the PS4 not been so impossible to find, that would have been larger. That said, I was surprised at how well the XB1 launched over here. There was a bit of launch buzz, and people who got one seemed to like it well enough.

The exclusives helped, and there actually are a few people who love Kinect and all that nonsense. I was expecting a 2:1 split, but they beat that easily. It's in the new year when that 100 euro difference will really be felt though. I think PS4 outsells Xbox 3:2 minimum for the next 9 months. As always, though next Christmas will really tell the tale.

How about having 5x the population?

If the X1 number is indeed for six weeks...

Average units sold per week:

Ps4 530,000/5 = 106k
X1 364,000/6 = 60k
