What is Ticket to Ride?

Ticket to Ride (board game)

Ticket to Ride is a railway-themed German-style board game designed by Alan R. Moon and published in 2004 by Days of Wonder. The game is also known as Zug um Zug (German), Les Aventuriers du Rail (French), Aventureros al Tren (Spanish), and Menolippu (Finnish).

The game won the 2004 Spiel des Jahres, the Origins Award for Best Board Game of 2004 and the 2005 Diana Jones award and As d'Or, and came 2nd in the Schweizer Spielepreis for Family Games. Ticket to Ride: Europe won the 2005 International Gamers Award.

The game ends when one player has exhausted or nearly exhausted his or her supply of coloured train pieces. When this occurs, every player then plays one additional turn, after which they each reveal his or her previously hidden 'destination' cards. Additional points are awarded for having successfully completed the routes on the cards, whereas points are subtracted for any incomplete routes. A ten point bonus is awarded to the player who has the longest continuously connected set of routes.

Ticket to Ride Hands-On (Xbox 360)
By: David Chapman - "WldCard"

Like peanut butter and chocolate, these days it seems like Xbox LIVE Arcade and board/card games are two great tastes that taste great together. After the critical success of games like Catan, Carcassonne, and Lost Cities, it's beginning to look like getting together with friends around the table for a good old fashioned game night will soon be replaced with firing up the 360 and chatting things up over Xbox LIVE. The latest board game to make the jump from analog to digital is Alan R. Moon's popular railway building game, Ticket to Ride.

In Ticket to Ride, up to five players compete in a race to build networks of railroads across the United States and parts of Canada. At the beginning of the game, players pick two Destination cards from a random selection of three. These Destination cards show a pair of cities on the map. The player must work to build railways between the two cities listed on each of their Destination cards using train cars of eight different colors, along with Locomotive cards, which act as wildcards and can represent any other colored car. Each turn, players can either claim routes (assuming they have the correct number and colors required), draw new Destination cards to build, or draw cards to add to their selection of rail cars. Players can draw two cards, either from five face up cards, or from a blind draw off the top of the deck.

Select two destination tickets…

To get from Point A to Point B, players connect cities by claiming routes between cities, which is done by matching both the number and color of cars that makes up predetermined paths. There are also gray paths scattered around the map that can be built using the right number any single color. Players earn points by building routes between any cities on the map, with longer routes earning more points than shorter ones. Completing the goals of Destination cards earns the player bonus points, while failing to complete Destination goals result in a penalty. Bonus points are also awarded to the player who ends the game with the longest continuous railway.

Ticket to Ride is one of those games that's pretty simple to get the hang of, but requires a lot of strategy to excel at. While the game is certainly fun on its own merits, the competitive nature of the game lends an extra level of excitement. Working against others to build the best and most expansive railway while trying to head others off at the pass, all while trying to connect your Destination goals is a thrill. And while the game's AI proves a good challenge for any skill level, the real fun comes in taking on live opponents in full five player multiplayer games over Xbox LIVE. Games are quick to set up and jump into, and seem to play without ever getting derailed by lag issues. As an added bonus, Playful Entertainment and Days of Wonder have plans to release additional maps and expansions to the game via the Xbox LIVE Marketplace.

As far as the game's overall presentation goes, there's not a whole lot that can be added to the board game experience. The overall setup is laid out nice and clean, and it's easy to keep track of everything happening on the screen. One problem I ran into in this build of the game, though, is in reading some of the routes on the map. It's difficult to tell the difference between the orange and red routes on the board, and the city labels occasionally obscure parts of the routes, making it difficult to tell just how many or what kind of cars it takes to complete them.

So far, it looks like Ticket to Ride will make the jump from the table to the console without too much difficulty. The digital version is just as much fun to play with friends as the original, but without all the necessary set up and clean up. If you've tried out Carcassonne and Catan and are looking to expand your XBLA board game library, Ticket to Ride should be worth a look when it finally pulls into the station later this year.

Update 1: I just want to clear a misconception. We believe a small achievement policy change has taken place, but do not have any proof other than what the old rule stated, and the sudden change with the impending release of Ticket To Ride. Could DLC be launching with the title? Either way, until the game comes out, which is rumored to be this Wednesday, we won’t have an idea.

Well, we got a ticket to ride, and we’ll be playing it soon on the Xbox Live Arcade. Yet until that time, its time for another sneak peak at some achievements!

Ticket To Ride will launch with an unusual 15 achievements for 250 points. It seems an unannounced achievement policy change has taken place, since games are supposed to launch with only 12, and add more with DLC. Yet, we aren’t complaining! You’ll need to win some games online, play the tutorial, and even find the secret achievement to get all all of them! The full list below!

6.5, Passable

Can't wait for the next big multi board game on XBLA.

Back from a work trip on fri and I will be playing a tonne. I expect many Gaf games.

Heard great things from people who have played it so far.

Will buy. Keep the board games coming.

What exactly does the European version offer that this version does not? It's lame that they would not just include all variations/game types in this full version. ...and I'm still waiting for more Carcassonne DLC.

asked a friend of mine of the version differences..
his comments:
We have the european one and weve also played the north america one too. The eurpoean one is better. It has ferries and tunnels to deal with. Also played the online version of this game which I assume will be the model for the xbox one. Its pretty much identical to the box version.

Actually, if I may direct the attention of the grumbly Euro people to the Achievement listings, it looks like Ticket to Ride Europe is going to be in the package after all.

Really looking forward to this. I like board games. :)

From the achievements though it looks very possible that they are going to have some of it (the European version) as DLC at day one. Hope I'm wrong about that and they've just changed the rules about achievements but I'll be annoyed if they try to charge extra for bits that could have been included in the main game. Carcassone really took the piss with its DLC.

I'll be playing the crap out of this one. I love XBLA board games. Never played the table top version, but looks really fun.

And the 1910 expansion for the US board, which is nice - if you have the original game and haven't got 1910 yet, then you're missing out. It'll be interesting to see if either the Marklin or Switzerland boards make it in there as well, as both are vastly superior to TtR:Europe.

I'm interested in this game's offline multiplayer. One feature mentions 4 player single console support. How would they do that since the game is card based? That's why Catan had no single console support.

But if it's done well, my friends and I may just play the Xbox version instead of the real board game since we don't have to ever set up or clean up!

I've been wanting to try this game for years now, but was always turned off by the $50 price tag, so $10 is awesome news.

Meh to the European edition. Marklin > Switzerland/US >>>>>>>> Europe. Switzerland beats the US hands down for 2/3 players, US is obviously better for 4/5.

i bought the box recently (goes for about 35 on thoughthammer) and was pleasantly surprised to find it also comes with a code to play online--http://www.daysofwonder.com/en/signup/?returnto=tickettoride

lack of local multi in catan was kind of a bummer as i don't have a box copy and have wanted to play on a few occasions so that's a nice perk.

yeah, i've always heard really good things about this board game. im thinking of picking this game up on xbla if the impressions are favorable

how does local multi work? are other people required to close their eyes or leave the room?

These are four different boards? Are all of them included in the XBLA version or at least planned for DLC?

The game doesn't exactly sell itself, but I've heard nothing but good things about the board game, so I'll be downloading it tomorrow night.

I'll definitely give this a shot, and there will probably be some variety of transaction going down. I still play Carcassonne pretty often, though Catan didn't quite pull me in to the "actually paying for it" part.

Looking at the achievements, there are actually 15 on there for 250 points. Assumedly this means 50 points and 3 achievements to towards an expansion which might be released straight away?

All screens show just America for now.

Yea, I was thinking the same kind of thing, a DLC pack released right when the game streets.

Even though Lost Cities was a bust for me - I haven't played it since I unlocked it - I'm definitely going to grab this. We should get some GAF games going sometime.

5 if you include the limited edition Nordic Countries board that released at the same time as Switzerland. I'd put money on that version never making it onto XBLA :D

Gowans, better polish your skills... :D

:lol between this and Civ Rev my brain will burst.

Will be on Thurs night for a battle (and tutorial) :D

Yes, with additional rules. Marklin in particular changes the way the game is played with its passenger mechanic - makes the middle game far more important.

Not sure whether they're all planned for DLC/immediate inclusion, though. From the achievements, US and Europe will be there day one, and if Marklin isn't added soon after I will want to know why. Switzerland might be a no-show given the fact that it's only for 2-3 players.

Can't wait to try out the demo. The concept sounds very intriguing, and I would love a good chill-out game for XBLA that I can play with friends.

Don't own an Xbox, but just wanted to chime in that the board game is excellent.

If somehow XBLA got "Puerto Rico" (Best board game ever), I'd actually buy an xbox.

i hope this game has a good tutorial because that looks complicated as fuck

Ticket to Ride is EXTREMELY simple concept. Trouble is trying to pick the best paths so you screw others, and others don't screw you.

Screwing others for the sake of screwing others is such a big opportunity cost that it's seldom worth it in my experience - it might stop someone else winning, but it won't be you who benefits from that. The important thing to do is to identify the areas in your planned routes that will be bottlenecks early and make sure that you get your connections into them as cheaply as possible - that screws other people as a side effect, but also advances your own game.

All I want to know is, where in the God damned hell is Alhambra?

That was cancelled.

Unfortunately no new information ever came out on the title. After a ton of digging around, we finally were able to find out that due to "unforeseen difficulties", the version of the game that was announced, has been canceled. Whether or not this leaves the title open for a different publisher to pick up is still in question.

Now if only Playful Entertainment (the developer) had included a single-player game with more life and depth than a standard bot match with varying difficulty, then maybe Ticket to Ride would have turned a few more heads.

So IGN want something completely different from the board game? Would they review Monopoly and ask for a different single player game?

This game RULES. Single player is fun to learn how things work but like Catan this is going to be a killer multiplayer game

Gowans I expect invites this weekend too.

Eager to grab the demo after work. To the people that picked up the full version: Any major problems, online issues, etc.?
