The Final Fantasy game that is beloved by all (for numerous reasons) is twenty years old in the States today, so yeah..let's celebrate! (You can talk about memories or how much you love/hate the game in this thread)

I've also thought the game was dope and it's the first Final Fantasy game from the 2D era that I really love (mainly because of the steampunk elements, which would stay in the series for well, ever) and the soundtrack for the game is pretty damn beautiful as well

Oh yeah....some dude released a mash up album that has Wu Tang acapellas over Final Fantasy VI songs, so maybe you could listen to that to celebrate or something!

I watched a friend do most of the cool parts when it came out. To this day I have never finished it, I probably should. Wii U VC release plz.

my childhood friend texted me that it was the 20th anniversary... he was so obsessed with it and i was kind of meh on FF as a whole. but eventually i got drawn into it and my gaming life was changed forever.

this really was a game changer back in the day. probably the first genuinely "cinematic" game that wasn't purely FMV

I bartered a complete copy of this game (with the map, box and manual) for thirty bucks and some Magic the Gathering cards. I still have it. The memories!

I was an RPG fanatic way back when, so I "discovered" this one before JRPGs got mainstreamed thanks to FFVII. I'm still convinced it's one of the best (if not the best) RPGs ever made. I still replay it regularly.

I've still yet to play FF VI for some reason. I contemplated the PS1 version, but apparently loading times are bad? Could just go with the Wii version, but I've been holding out for FF VI on the Wii U VC (noa/square pls).

I also know next to nothing about the game except that you can suplex a train.

This is actually something I'd like to celebrate. brb firing up my
GB Micro

On par with XII for best FF. Can't wait for XVIII.

I was 14 when this game released and my first memory of seeing it in action was the weekend after it released. My best friend called me on a Saturday afternoon to tell me that his Dad had just bought a copy from Toys R Us. I had just come home from a rough high school football game and was bummed out that my team lost and even more bummed that I didn't play as well as I would have liked. But hearing the news of seeing the new Final Fantasy game in action perkede right up. I hopped on my bike my rode to my friend's house in record time. I walked into his house just as his Dad was meeting the frozen Esper with Terra. I remember being blow away at the music and graphical quality. I think both my friend & I watched his Dad play for several hours that night. "How did Squaresoft go from Final Fantasy II to this?!", I thought.

Little did I know about FFV and true history of the series that was hidden from the west. I didn't receive my own copy until that Christmas. I went on to play through the game four complete times during 1995. I still consider III/IV to be the pinnacle of the series.

My first RPG. My awesome cousin insisted my family buy it for me for Christmas 1994 because she thought the moogle on the front was cute.

I went from not understanding why inputting commands on the battle screen wasn't causing my fighters to instantly attack, to falling in love with an entirely new genre.

What a game. What a series.

I've played every revision/remake of this wonderful game, and my thoughts:

FF III (SNES/Wii VC): Do it. The original. The timeless sprites and music are untouched and wonderful.
FF VI PSone: Nope. Slow ass loads and music/sound effects that just don't sound 100% right. If you didn't hear the difference, listen again.
FF VI GBA: Nope. Love the newly revised script and all the additional content (much better than the extra content in Chrono Trigger DS), but the low-res, washed out colours and horrendous version of the soundtrack make this a poor choice. The patch to get the SNES OST running with the game wasn't perfect when I tried it out. Still no good.
FF VI iOS: Better than you'd think. Controls take a bit of getting used to, but they've patched things recently to make them even better. The music is untouched and beautiful. All of the extra content and the revised/fixed script from the GBA version are included (and then some), and without the sacrifice of washed out colours or a low-res. You just need to swallow the new sprites. And honestly? They're really not as bad as people say. And it's not just about getting used to them; they're really not bad at all. I actually found myself enjoying the new look a lot, even as a 20-year player of this game. Be open-minded and give it a shot. It's a fantastic version of the game that I wish I could play on a bigger screen. (it runs like shit on my iPad 3 :(

I helped a friend with his paper route for months so that we could discuss how amazing FF3 was going to be. Being dumbasses and not even really knowing the exact release date, we were shocked to find it sitting on the kitchen table one glorious day. Hi Mark L!

Damn 20 years already. I used to beat the game and over. I even leveled up all the characters to 99, taught them every spell, all of Gau's rages, etc. Man, I really need to get around to a replay which I haven't done in years. FFIV still holds a bigger place in my heart since it got me into rpgs but VI is still my pick for best in the series.

Squaresoft used to be so cool. They were back in the day how Neogaf nowadays obsesses about Platinumgames and Naughty Dog.

Second favorite game of all time.

A masterpiece that sadly most people haven't played. I doubt they'd understand the game anyway.

I'm getting ready to start a new game of VI. I've done some patching to the GBA version and loaded it on my flashcart. I'd like to play the SNES version, for the nostalgia, but I don't have any way to play it now. It's hard to believe it's been 20 years since the game first came out.

Wow, I thought I was older when this came out. I was only 8. Jesus.

I remember reading Nintendo Power obsessively the weeks leading up to me getting this game.

I came very close to not playing FFVI. I had played FFIV in 1992, recommended by a friend becasuse "It's just like D&D." He didn't elaborate and I let my imagination run wild. Suffice it to say, it was nothing like D&D in any way that I was hoping it would, and it really sullied my opinion of the game. A couple years later I was online and had managed to find a couple of BBS for gamers, made some online friends. When FFVI was about to come out, I was practically the only one saying "Nah, not interested, I'm not into FF. I played the last one, hated it." It was like it was their mission in life to convince me to give it a chance. "I played the import, believe me, it's waaaay better than FFIV*! Trust me! You'll love it!" Eventually I promised to try it just to shut them up. I rented it... and I think partially it was because I knew what kind of game to expect, and partially because it simply was that good... I totally fell in love with it. It's the game that made me a diehard FF fanboy, which I remained for many many years, until FFXIII finally broke the spell. FFVI is one of those games that I replayed so many times, I don't think I can ever replay it again. I tried to play the GBA version when it came out, but I didn't get very far. Only up to the river raft sequence, I think. I've tried to go back to it since then, I just can't. Still too burned out. Pity, I recall really enjoying the superior translation.

* Of course we all said "FF2" and "FF3" back then.

Beat this game more times than I can remember. Only game I took over half the players to level 99. Still have fond memories of giving Edgar the Genji Glove and Offering along with Atma Weapon and Illumina and going solo against the Dinosaurs on the island. He was definitely my go-to character, even over Sabin. Kefka's my favorite final boss and has the most epic music of any game I've played, SNES or not.

This game made me love RPGs and brings me back to my childhood. Squaresoft of old, I salute you.

Man, I was relentlessly calling Babbages daily in hopes they got their shipments(back before release dates were publicly known). My frothing demand for this game was at peak levels at the time.

The battle system is comically broken, but the rest of the game is well-crafted to a degree that Square has never been able to even reproduce, much less top.

overall GOAT RPG story imo...

sometimes I think VII is the better overall RPG just because of how amazing it was produced and how classic it is cinematically... the pre-rendered environments, the scenes, the emotions of some of the scenes... I think it's the most ominous and thrilling FF at least

but if FF6 had the production values of 7, it'd take the cake I think just because the story is so much better written imo

especially those 15 hours or so in the middle when the political opera climaxes and you can feel hope so close to your grasp...

by far the great sense of 'fall' or loss in any rpg imo... the way everything changes in just unmatched, it makes you feel helpless like no other video game. such an accomplishment.

Pretty much ground zero for my passion for games (as opposed to just a time killer).

I think a friend brought it over and played co-op with me against Mr. Chupon in about December 1994. But I actually didn't "get it" yet.

Sometime in early 1995, my brother rented the game.... I rented Beavis and Butthead, and I thought my brother's decision was foolish. But then I got my hands into the game..... OH. Best game ever and I never forgot it.

So happy I have complete in box copies (of both the American III and the Japanese VI!)

One of the best Final Fantasy games ever (second to FF VII in my opinion)

You don't deserve that name and avatar haha! But yeah I know you're still saying it's awesome.

Best FF-game, and perhaps best RPG?

Undoubtedly, FFVI was the true pinnacle of squaresoft productions. the music - even if the opera scene is a little overrated in my view, the mature story with
the world ending, death of cid and celes suicide attempt
, fantastic battle system, well crafted characters (from terra to celes), and lots of side-quests and exploration to boot.

What a fall from grace....

I'm pretty sure the battle system is broken for most Final Fantasy games (and yes, most of them are also well crafted)
