I was hoping to leave this contained until I had the good news to share with you all, but as it turns out, GAF contains "objectionable content." This I cannot dispute.

The punch-line is that I've been toiling away on a thick client for browsing (and in the future, posting to) NeoGAF! It's been extremely fun and educational to put together so far, and there is a ton of work left to do on it.

The app is called MobileGAF. I've set up a Google Group named after the app here. The Group has a general app README page, as well.

What I need from you, GAF!

Since the app's actual release is now facing a pretty significant delay, I'd like to invite you to beta test it.

If you're interested in trying out a pre-release version of MobileGAF:

1.) Join the MobileGAF Google Group
2.) Send me a PM with your device's UUID and your e-mail address so I can send/BCC you builds.

Thanks for everyone who's (already) PMed in their UUIDs.

Twitter updates

If you're interested, you can follow the app's development on Twitter as well. I'll start posting to it after this initial hurdle of getting everyone who's interested here registered.

Lurkers

I've gotten a couple e-mails from lurkers who want in. That's okay too! Post to the Google Group or find a way to get ahold of me and I'll try to add you if there's room.

If Trent Reznor can get his shit through, so can you!

Perhaps they'll let it through with 3.0?

That sucks, man. Aren't there some sort of parental controls coming in 3.0? Maybe they'll loosen restrictions on this kind of stuff after that comes out.

Oh wow. The effort is much appreciated - but I also like the web app. OMG decisions.

Anyway, you need to pull a hissy fit like NIN.

P.S. I also blame all the swearing misogynists. He was right!

P.P.s That really sucks. The app itself doesn't contain objectionable material anymore than Safari Mobile. But I can see why Apple does this. Hopefully 3.0 can clear this mess up.

Worst app ever with reporting.

Does this app pull its data directly from neogaf.com?

It does, yeah. That was one of the goals (I didn't like my web app because one of my servers had to act as middleman).

Since you're obviously technical, I can go into a little more detail. MobileGAF downloads the source and then uses libxml2 and XPath to convert pages into an object model and uses it to generate the table views.

Sorry if this sounds a bit stupid but I am still looking to buy an iphone so I got no idea.

Doesn't the iphone has a web browser?

I don't really have the time to beta test and offer serious feedback, but I can quickly ask here to please make the button bars blue and not that ugly orange. :)

hopefully this will get approved soon. I guess the content ratings in 3.0 will help fix this crap with the App Store rejecting apps displaying "objectionable" web content freely available on Safari...

I'm pretty sure ad hoc distribution is capped at 100 users. So I'd theoretically be able to share it with up to 90 or so GAFfers (who knows, maybe that's larger than the entire audience who would be interested)

UUID sent!

I love me the web app, but the idea of eventually being able to post in app makes me giddy.

I hear you on the color. It's grown on me.

It's important to me the app be recognizable and distinctive. Right now that orange color is nearly exactly that of the orange in the NeoGAF logo. I think I'll probably tone it down a bit in response to your comment, though.

That said, I'm absolutely going to make the color configurable in response to your feedback. The app has a Settings prefpane that could handle this pretty well.

Without posting capabilities, what would this offer over ckohler's web app? I'm finding the web app to more than awesome for my mobilegaf needs.

Fake-edit: The readme seems to indicate that logging in and the subsequent viewing of the matchup forum is also included, for those wondering what the differences might be.

Well I don't have an iPhone, but I like the orange color. The combination of the orange, gray, and blue colors emulate the real theme well. I don't think it's garish or anything.

Ah, sorry I can't offer a direct comparison, I haven't used ckohler's webapp since he first launched it.

All I can say about mine so far is that I've gotten pretty addicted to reading GAF while I'm out and about, so it seems sufficient for my purposes so far (obviously, that's not to diminish ckohler's work at all, as I just never got in the habit of using his).

Edit: Yeah, I realized by chance that it looks like logging in with the app's built-in browser will actually store an app-wide cookie that applies to normal viewing. This "unlocks" the Online forum and may ultimately be the quick-and-dirty way to get in-app replies working (I haven't started that piece yt)

Weird - I thought Apple was now approving of apps based on the alleged parental controls built into OS 3.0?

I also second the Cydia route if possible. I'd love to test it!

Is there anything we need to do after we send our UUID's to get the beta app to show up?

Fuck, this means the GiantBomb ap will probably be denied as well. Lame.
:lol

I just looked for that app on the store like 10 minutes ago.

This is correct... but I'll say no more.

Updated the OP. I'll need everyone's e-mail address to create a distro list, on it I'll e-mail a copy of the binary and the certificate with instructions on the install (in the next day or so, I want to give people a chance to request to opt-in).

I've been searching every day since they said they submitted it. I can't access the site at the office so I need the damn ap.

You should port this to Android, then you won't have to worry about Apple's retarded policies. :P
Or, make this into a webapp that is mobile platform agnostic! Wait a minute...

Good luck Juice. I love the web-app as is, but a stand alone app would be awesome! Apple banned a Twitter client for the same thing, and eventually let it slide in a few days later, but there was a lot of press around that. Hopefully you'll be as lucky!

Obviously Juice and ckholer have put a ton of time and effort into making these apps for us and so I thank you both for that. Just wondering why you guys don't work together on this project? A super-team of Juice and ckholer would be awesome and I think you guys could come together and make it work. Bringing everything we love about ckholer's app and combining it with Juice's app would make the most badass super-gaf app. Just something to think about I guess.

Yet they approve baby killing simulators.

Good job Apple.

In Apple's defense, GAF is quite NSFW at times :lol

Anyway, applied, app looks amazing. One question though, does the app cache the content you last visited for future offline reference (in this case a thread)? That's one thing I love from apps like Twitterrific...and the same thing that's a deal breaker for others like the FML app.

Good question on caching. Currently, the app does support on-disk caching. This isn't some out-of-the-box feature of the iPhone SDK, FWIW, and doing it right takes a good amount of effort. However, so far I've been very intentional in how I use it, because it requires a number of other considerations. Currently, every time you open the main forums listing, that will almost always be cached (expires every couple days), but beyond that you're going to need a live network connection for now.

Yeah, I want to be mindful that I don't intend to be combative. At worst I'd invite a healthy rivalry between the two; at best I welcome the idea of cooperating.

I want to be clear that I was very intentional of not visiting ckohler's web app a single time once I started on MobileGAF. I didn't want to lift any of his ideas or creativity, and I wanted to know I was taking a fresh stab at a similar problem without a hint of malcontent. As a result, I don't plan to actively check out his webapp now that the cat's out of the bag, for the same reason, even if it means I won't be able to very well articulate the differences between his and mine.

Questionable content for... a portal to an internet forum. By the same meaning, Safari on the iPhone should be flagged for questionable content.

Apple's really fucked up with their willy-nilly App Store approval policies.
