Gamestar.de reviews Line of Defense MMO. Developer goes apoplectic.

Oh god Gamestar.de did a video on Smart's game:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t7n29gEV18w

(english subtitles included)

And there is an epic thread on steam forums about it:

steamcommunity.com/app/266620/discussions/0/535151589904350568/

So much fun! :D

Independent of what you think of Star Citizen or Smart's comments on them, the largest gaming mag in Germany took a look at Line of Defense... and found it unplayable. Totally, fundamentally broken in every aspect.

What makes this more fun than the average buggy game quick-look is that they submitted bug report tickets on Steam for the hard crashes they were getting. After submitting a second one they were labelled trolls by Smart, thinking they were random consumers, and threatened with a perma-ban. This is consistent with his previous reactions to people finding bugs in his game, i.e. they do not exist and it is all their fault.

Delusional.

If Derek Smart put half as much energy into game making as he did shitting on his customers, then he mi-- *snrk* no I can't finish that.

Guy's got some serious issues with constructive criticism.

Actually my colleague was not just threated. After another discussion Ben Danneberg actually got banned. There was a second article on our website about this topic, and why this behaviour (in general) is a problem for the editor, the game creator and the fans. After that Smart said he is done with german media.

Might as well connect what I posted in the other thread. This is fun.

The fact here is that, my games get finished, and released. And by the time the dust settles on the Star Citizen disaster in the making, our game will still be here.

Hehehehehehehe

the game is released for English language only. It's not localized, will NEVER be localized, and have no interest in supporting ANY other language other than English.

Well, that's just rude. Oh, how so many gamers will miss out on this masterpiece.

*continues to dig for something resembling shiny*

Mr. Smart doesn't seem to be intelligent nor responsible enough to build the game he's been dreaming of for something like two decades.

Not sure why people keep saying that the game has, thus far, cost $12m to make. I've never said any such thing. I've said that it has cost less than $12m to make thus far.

And I mention it only as a comparison to the 500+ team and $85m crowd-funded disaster in the making that still has no "game"; even after almost four years.

Anyone who thinks that a game of this scope, with all these engines, and all these assets, five years in development etc is cheap to make, is an idiot.

So, over $10 million was invested in this game. Incredible.

derek smart said:
Fine then. Don't play it.

Smart.

Thank god Line of Defense will always be there.

Jesus that is an unhealthy fixation on Star Citizen right there. Like anyone who says his game looks like crap is somehow an undercover agent from the Star Citizen forums.

Well that dosnt improve his communication skills. And never heard of any of his games.

They're all pretty much the same thing: An attempt to make an open-universe space game with ground and space combat, hampered by impenetrable UIs and near-infinite technical problems. Derek's basic concept is brilliant, but he has yet to come close to realizing it.

The edit war on Derek Smart's wiki page was brought to my attention in 2005. I knew he was batshit insane then, and I see nothing has changed in over a decade.

Derek Smart was a joke 20 years ago, apparently that hasn't changed much.

I remember actively following the stories regarding Battlecruiser 3000AD back then.
Good times...

Oh god, that weird voice-over guy still works for Gamestar. I wanted to watch the video, but listening to his voice going up and down as if he was reading fairy tales to five-year olds is just too much.

I think I just found the definition of generic. Even it is technically fixed, I see no appealing or innovative features anywhere.

Just let it die....

German video reviews and voice over are certainly no match made in heaven lol. I remember when PCGames explained their voice over was so bad because they did it themselves instead of letting a professional do it. Bitch please (at the time, no idea if they changed since then), you're the biggest video game magazine in Germany. Suck it up and put your back behind it or don't do it at all.

So that's why listening to his voice makes me feel nostalgic and oddly sleepy.
He should publish audio books.

oh, i wasn't the only one. that voice is absolutely horrible.

He's going to send the crow extinct if he's not careful

Wow that's not vaporware, that is almost malware lol

Best thing are the Ingame weapon packs for 49,99 which disappear after loggin off, holy shit

Derek Smart is pretty amazing

No, I'm TOO BUSY to record a short 10-minute raw gameplay video of the various groundbreaking gameplay features that I claim to be in Line of Defense but nobody has seen.

If you excuse me, I'm going to write several pages of text arguing with people on Steam forums now

Holy shit the end of that vid really tops it off haha

What engine are they using to make this!? In house?
Yeah, they brag theat they developed their own engine to satisfy their needs for the game.

Yeah he is old school. Was Indy before the scene existed. Mainly due to pissing publishers off and trying to sue them.

If too many posts are in this thread he will sense a disturbance in the force, and appear here. U don't want to summon that evil spawn accidentally lol

I have a interesting story about encounters with him, but I don't want to go into detail as he will know who it is and msg me on linkedin.

The stuff you find disappears when you log. The only way to keep anything (but the starter stuff, I'm assuming) is to buy the packs.

You can tell it's a trainwreck when, 35 pages into the Steam thread, the dev is still arguing with commenters. I don't think anyone would pay attention to Smart if he wasn't such a dummox.

I almost feel bad with people picking on Derek Smart.. it's pretty clear the guy is mentally disabled. He's been this way for 20+ years now.

Then again, I don't feel that bad, as you know the guys full of shit and been feeding shit to people for years.

Derek Smart is the gift that keeps on giving, before Dyack , before Pitchford there was Derek Smart. Did Battlecruiser 3000 AD ever wind up doing even 10% of what he promised? Now there's a retrospective article dying to be written 'Patched 3000 AD versus Derek Smart's Hype'.

Had some time to sit down and watch the video and read the Steam discussion thread.

Holy shit, can we get this guy a GAF account? It'll be hilarious.

It is kinda mindblowing that Derek Smart is an actual person that exists. I would have thought he is just some kind of troll-focused AI construct if I hadn't seen him on video.
