Metal Gear Solid V Will not Have a Preload on Steam

Is this newer intel than those Konami tweets then? I have a feeling we won't actually know until Monday at this point.

I think those Konami tweets were after. This timeline is more complicated than the natural order of events in the entire Legend of Zelda series!

Fucking love the despair and madness that always happens before a big release. Entertaining stuff, makes it all that much sweeter when we actually get to play it...

Ah, who the hell am I kidding... I need it now.

Midnight on the 1st means I'll be lucky if I can start the game on the 3rd. Oh well, with my shitty internet I already had to be prepared to wait.

Already got my PC retail copy, how safe do you think it is to try activating it through steam? (Would they ban me?)

Activation has been up for god knows how long, you'll simply have the game in your library and you can't do anything else.

Sad.

Bro upload the .iso dude

gimme those preload files

I've got the physical copy because my Internet is slow, it would take forever to do that even if I wanted to.;)
(the dvd is probably empty too)

Edit: the dvd contains....the Steam installer and that's it.
At least it was cheaper than buying it through steam...

One second it's yes New Zealand

The next it's no New Zealand

Please Konami, have some mercy in your hearts for the Kiwi PC master race demographic

Lol no. I've bought quite a few Steam retail games. They all have the game files.

Maybe I misunderstood the post. It sounded like the DVD contains only the Steam installer (i.e. like 50MB of data).
really? were they steamworks titles?

i don't buy retail anymore, but i have a friend who usually does. he does it mainly for a box on his shelf because 9 times out of 10 there's no actual game data on the disk.

not unexpected though. seems nobody outside press and industry has access to the pc version until the 1st with zero exceptions.

I took a quick look through my shelf and unless there's something missing I have the following Steam titles: Bioshock Infinite, Deus Ex HR, Hitman Absolution, Sleeping Dogs

All came with a mandatory Steam code and a couple of discs each for the game files. You insert the disc and start installation, which will open up Steam and copy the game files into your SteamLibrary folder.

Edit: To clarify further, you cannot install the game before the game unlocks (if you get your copy early). I had this with DXHR and Hitman.

Fine for me. It's 30gigs, so it will be downloading for a while, better for that to happen while I'm asleep. :P

Hmph, Mad Max and TPP release date is supposed to be the same September 1st

Mad Max on Steam however

Available: 31 August
This game will unlock in approximately 2 days and 11 hours

Our Phantom Pain

Available: 1 September
This game will unlock in approximately 3 days and 5 hours

Millions of people downloading 30gigs all at once. Yes, that will turn out swell. Is there a more idiotic company than Konami?

Steam's good for it. Multi Billion dollar corporation that's in the top 20 data users on the entire internet, they've undoubtedly got a back end that's rolled gold to say the least.

Pity their reps couldn't finagle Konami into preload but it is what it is.

To prove a point, this is what happened to the Steam servers when GTA V started preloading - and the servers and Steam functioned without issue.

MGSV TPP, even when forcing everyone to download around the same time, will likely be less than that since it isn't as popular judging by how they have charted on Steam in comparison. Gta V was at the top of the charts for several months consistently before release, while TPP wasnt available for as long and only topped the chart when the reviews dropped. Anyway, I'll take a screen cap when it launches.

You didn't misunderstand, it contains only the steam installer. Unless the content is hidden. But I wasn't able to find it.

So I've just read that the reason for the lack of a pre-load is because Steam doesn't allow them for bundled games, and TPP comes with a copy of Ground Zeroes.

Do we know if that's true, have there been any other games that launched as a bundle that had a pre-load?

where did you read that?

False.

The way pre-loads work exactly is that the depots as they existed upon a game becoming pre-loadable (Steam's backend keeps older versions of depots, which is why even Valve can roll back patches when necessary) are downloaded in an encrypted state, provided of course they're included in your package. The reason there is often a relatively small download period upon unlock is that the data no longer matches, so Steam has to download what is essentially a patch -- there are no missing files, aside from perhaps the executable in cases where the game in question is using CEG ("Steam DRM"), due to how it works.

But, yeah, you're absolutely right that there's no justification for a lack of a proper pre-load period. Even if Konami spent a few days fiddling with the data and it resulted in a 5GB "patch" on release day, that'd be preferable to downloading the whole hog for just about everybody.

Bioshock infinite.

So yeah, that's false.

That's the same for me. TPP seems to unlock at 6pm GMT on Tuesday 1st Sept for me if the countdown time is legit.

Even Mad Max, published by Warner Bros who has shown again and again to not give a fuck about PC, has preload. How sad.

the game actually goes live 5am BST sept 1st, the steam unlock date is for when pre-purchasing switches from the GZ/TPP bundle to the single TPP purchase
