Good Steam games with bad sales figures (SteamSpy)

Funny u made this thread
Danganronpa has around 20k owners
Nekopara 2 has around 30k
Granted nekopara 2 is cheaper but its a little disheartening that it gets outsold by such a game

Legend of Grimrock II. Sitting at ~250000 which is disappointing considering it's twice as good as the first one (but has sold about 4x less).

Exactly the game my mind went to when I saw the thread title. It's criminal how few have played this game.

The first game was bundled over and over again though, and sequels tend to sell less. 250k seems quite good for such a title really.

Bear in mind that these numbers are not "sales". They are copies activated on steam.

If a game has been sold in a bundle, not all purchasers will activate their key.

There are promo keys given away for free, inflating the numbers.

Also they (obviously) exclude copies sold outside of steam.

It is interesting data, but it's worth noting the specifics of what the data actually means.

Concluding that a game has not been successful just from early steamspy numbers would be misguided.

Brilliant Indie Game. Came out a while ago, only 23k copies old.

Quite reasonable for an indie that came out a month ago. I wish I sold this much, heh.

Anyway, looks pretty good. Added to wishlist.

OT but checking out your tag and the thread related to it, it is HILARIOUS how hyped up for people were for Other M in that thread.

Story aside, I think it was a pretty fun game.

It depends, do they count Humble Bundle sales? Grimrock 1 was in at least 3 of those and if those count it has to shoot the number up a fair bit.

I know my copy on Steam is from a Humble Bundle at least.

What annoys me a bit about Steam, is that for a lot of advertising and visibility methods, it gives preference to games that are already popular. Say the Weekend Deal promotions: You have to already have thousands of players before Valve will contact you with a promotion deal. The same goes for the recent Holiday sales, many of the Recommendations and Featured deals were selected via algorithms that give preference to bigger and more popular titles.

Kind of defeats the point of it sometimes.

This game at least also has console/handheld releases. So I think it should be fine.

Nekopara is also brand new, while Danganronpa is two years old

Don't hate on nekos

I wonder if the name hurts it? Because it's not obvious (to me at least) that SC means "Second Chapter"

It's also a decade-old JRPG, and it looks it, so that probably doesn't help first impressions. Too bad, at that rate I don't know if XSEED will find it worthwhile to bring the third one to the west.

Yeah, that seems good, I would be super happy with that number :)

Even though I've bought the first one on PC, I only did that to support the release of SC....on PSP/Vita. I'll pick it up on PC eventually though. I wonder how many people did the same.

Still the game deserves a lot more sales than that.

Dragon Quest Heroes, perhaps? It only has 20k owners so far.
But yeah, it's a KT port so maybe that fact turns people away. The port sounds okay.

I dont know, im sure they know that SC is going to be a slow burn....i mean thats really the way it goes with sequel ports. The first game is such a long game , its going to take awhile before people finish it. I am only on chapter 2 and ive put a lot of hours into it. Same thing with ff 13.....no reason to grab 2 or 3 until i slog through the corridors of 1.

Also it hasnt really had a major sale yet either....the sales will likely double during its first sale.

I'd guess that what "hurts" it most is being a sequel to a game many bought but few finished. FC sold 170k on Steam, median playtime is 6 hours of an 80 hour long game. Most players probably didn't beat chapter 1.

To follow up on that, according to Steams achievement stats only 10.8% have beaten the first Trails in the Sky. That instantly reduces their potential target audience to ~17-19k, because there is pretty much no reason at all to buy SC if you haven't finished FC.

Some more 'fun' achievement data while I'm at it:
- Only 39.1% have completed the prologue
- Only 23.7% have completed the first chapter

16k sales is actually not bad at all considering all that, but it's still a painfully low number to look at.

They generic uninspired anime catgirl hoes
Eff dat unrefined ish
Real playas go after dat ebony AND ivory

Well, it's also twice cheaper. You can bet that at similar price, Danganronpa would've flied off the shelves :p

I kind of feel weird defeding Nekopara but whatever

It's impulse purchase priced, it's very short (~2 hours) and extremely light entertainment. You know exactly what you're getting when you buy it. Also it's basically free if you're good with trading cards.

Danganronpa is a much bigger investment, both in time and money, and it's not a new game. In the end I think both will do reasonably well though. They're not directly comparable.

That's the real tragedy. Steam numbers mean nothing for sales of sequels if no one plays their damn games. The good thing is that at least Trails FC still seems to sell at a good pace, so not all hope is lost.

Battle Fantasia Revised Edition

Owners: 2,209 ± 1,078
Players in the last 2 weeks: 422 ± 583 (19.1%)
Players total: 1,657 ± 934 (75%)

Lowest ranked Arcsys game. Still the best and most balanced 2.5d fighter, second only to SFV

Dragon Quest Heroes, perhaps? It only has 20k owners so far.

That game was also a study of how NOT to release a game. Came out shortly before the Christmas sale as a stealth release and wasn't discounted at all in any steam sale after that. A 20% discount during the Christmas Sale and a Front Page appearance would have worked wonders for this game. Not discounting it at all was pretty stupid...

Legend of Grimrock II. Sitting at ~250000 which is disappointing considering it's twice as good as the first one (but has sold about 4x less).

That's too bad. I love old school dungeon crawlers and Grimrock rocks. I wonder what explains the steep drop off? Just too many games for people to choose from maybe? I think market saturation might have something to do with it. Everyone I know has a 200+ game backlog on Steam and everyone waits for Humble Bundles or massive deep discounts during seasonal sales. There's just so many games to choose from and not enough time.

I think both already did "reasonably well". They are somewhat OT for this thread.

A game which really didn't do as well as it deserves is Chariot. The numbers look decent enough, but it has been deeply discounted multiple times.

Yeah I'm pretty sure I read somewhere the problem is of those who bought FC, barely anyone finished it. And based on the numbers that did finish it, nearly all of them.bought SC.

People should play Trails FC already!

Criminally under appreciated game, which in my opinion is up there with Shovel Knight regarding the quality and respect to the NES era. If you ever wanted a new classic Castlevania, look no further.

Also it's Berserk as fuck. Especially the last stage.
