VIRGIN Blue will be taking James Cameron's blockbuster Avatar to the skies today as part of the massive advertising blitz accompanying the film's release on DVD and Blu-ray.
A cross-promotional deal between 20th Century Fox and the airline will see an Avatar logo plastered across a Boeing 737, as well as an in-flight advertising campaign on the airline's planes and boarding passes, and promotions in airports and lounges. The deal will also see $50 Virgin Blue Holidays vouchers inside the packaging of each movie.
The jet will make its debut today when it flies from Brisbane to Sydney with crew members and passengers made up as Na'vi, the blue creatures at the centre of the sc-fi movie, as part of the official launch of the home entertainment formats.
The blitz by Fox is its biggest to date and also includes a tie-in with the Nine Network and outfitting the Bulldogs rugby league team with a one-off jersey.
Avatar is the biggest-grossing film of all time, with worldwide receipts of $US2.5 billion ($2.72bn).
The release of the home discs in the US last week saw 4 million copies sold on DVD, and a further 2.7 million sold on Blu-ray in the first four days.
