Polygon: The Assassin’s Creed 2 remaster got weird

Thought somebody might like these...

The original Assassin's Creed blew me away last generation, it was the first to make me think 'this is next-gen'. AC2 was beautiful too.

A shame this remaster is a flop, I would have actually liked to play this trilogy again.

The bug-eyed characters really bother me in 2, but otherwise it's still nice to replay this game. We've been to Firenze a couple of times since 2 released, so my wife keeps complaining about inaccuracies lol.

That opening with Ezio's theme is still one of the best.
"It is a good life we lead, brother" is probably my favorite scene in the series, along its mirror bookend at the end of Revelations
when Ezio finds Altair's final resting place.

Nope. The author has posted more recent videos for newer AC games I think so I think he's still around... try PMing him on youtube?

edit: found his post history on reddit. looks like he's reuploaded:

I haven't used it myself yet but when I do get a 4K60 capable gaming machine you bet i'm going to do this.
Thank you for bringing this to my attention. I was initially disappointed that PC players weren't getting yet another remaster, but after seeing what they've done and just a moment ago playing the PC version at 4K60, I can't say I'm too upset anymore. The draw distance is still terrible, but setting the shadows to the 4x the original highest resolution helps a great deal, and native 4k60 is hard to beat.

The PC version has a few quirks though, that require a bit of tweaking.

  • If you're using anything other than a wired 360 controller then you'll need to install a couple files to fix the button mapping. You can download them here:

  • Vsync isn't triple buffered and even though I didn't appear to be dropping frames, it seemed to be the cause of a lot stuttering for me. I couldn't get D3DOverrider to recognize the game anymore ever since moving to Windows 10, but installing RadeonPro and using its triple buffering was easy enough, and it completely resolved all of the stuttering. RadeonPro is GPU vendor agnostic, despite it's name. Most of its features will work with Nvidia GPUs.

This is a good video to watch alongside Polygon's video for a little objectivity.

Well i think most of the thread is just laughing at the gif, or maybe a bit at Polygon not knowing what occurred in AC2. Or did everyone not know that this all existed prior?

I haven't encountered the super fast climbing bug or the messed up climbing animations bug, and so far online I can only find footage of those issues from the Xbox One version - hopefully it's just a rare bug Polygon ran into and not like, an actual issue with the Xbox version.
Its a AC2 glitch thats already known. May have occured on the XB1 more often or something.

Part of me wants to play through all major AC games, but I just don't have the time.
There's only five of them, and you can skip Assassin's Creed - the intro video at the start of Assassin's Creed II brings you up to speed. So that just leaves four, II, Brotherhood, Revelations, and III.

You can skip Revelations also. I don't really like III but if really wants to see the (admittedly terrible) resolution, then they should play it.

I waffled on that. I don't think the "previously on" in III really covers either
Subject 16 or Lucy's betrayal
all that well, although it's been a while.

Besides, even if the modern story is a bit light, the gameplay was fine (unlike the original AC which is rather monotonous). and I liked the closure it gave Ezio.

I don't know that Revelations did much to cover those two plot points either, but I don't remember because that game was overall pretty forgettable.

Revelations (specifically the DLC) was where we found out
Lucy was a Templar
- Brotherhood had the what but not the why.

And then
Subject 16
was the entire modern day storyline in the main game...

So for people who have played this. Is that climbing thing a glitch or a permanent change?

Because if it's a glitch I still want to pick the game up. Already have all the achievements for the ps3 version ans Xbox 360

I never played the DLC; I think that plot point was explained at some point in III, but the stuff you get from Revelations you can get by reading a plot synopsis.

Its a glitch that can happen in every version of AC2. Shame it wasnt sorted for this release but man I've played through AC2 five times and never encountered it, kind of hope I do when I get the remaster because its funny as hell.

They even updated their article to say they fucked up basically. Even though they still kept the article up with the update at the bottom.

This should be included in the op. Pretty shitty for Polygon to smear a game like this...
Highlighting weird glitches and oddities is nothing new for AC. Unity had the same thing happen with that no face bug. It was a bug that was fixed in the day one patch, only on PC, and only possible on a few GPUs, but it was all anyone ever talked about when it came to that game because it was easy to laugh at.
