My friends and I can sit down and actually genuinely enjoy this movie for some reason.

+1 for Speed Racer, too.

One of my favorite movies of the last 10 years. God, I wish I had listened to GAF and seen it in theaters.
 
In full agreement with Speed Racer. One of my favorite films.

Gangs of New York. It has a 72 at Metacritic, but I seem to remember more people hating on it than liking it.

And I absolutely love Australia (52 at Metacritic):

Also, the Mario Brothers movie. It sucks if you want a movie like the games, but as an early nineties timepiece I like it, and it is worth it to see the weird ways they try to make the source material fit into a more realistic setting.

I love Kung Pow. Definitely one of the most quotable comedies ever. Right up there with Super Troopers.

"Taco Bell! Taco Bell! Product placement with Taco Bell! Enchirito! Nacho, Burrito!"

Just thinking about that movie brings a smile to my face. Chosen's facial expressions throughout were just hilarious.

I'll go halfway with you. The movie was not bad. The secret weapon idea even worked for the movie.

I think the films real failing is that it needed to be longer and the plot was over condensed. Thank Universal for that one.
 
yeah it has to be speed racer. action scenes that are pure joy to watch, using stunning cg visuals to create a film based around embracing artifice, a likeable lead that can root for and a great soundtrack. i'd even argue that it has complexity in how it beautifully juggles multiple storylines at the start and presents the worldview of a child despite the apparent simplicity, but mostly it's just the most fun, most visually inventive and most exciting blockbuster of the last decade. i adore it.

a great regret of mine is that i only ever caught it on bluray and never saw it in cinemas.

I also love the mario bros movie. I know it's nothing like the games, but it's still a fun movie

The problem with Cable Guy is it wasn't a comedy at all. Had Jim Carey made Cable Guy 5 years ago it would have been really well received.

It came out back when he was in the middle of his gross-out comedy schtick before he was well respected and everyone went in expecting Ace Ventura or Dumb and Dumber and walked into a really fucked up dark dramady.

What? Dune was critically panned? Damn, I love Dune. Australia was pretty good too, IMO. Then again, I'm partial to sprawling epics.

I agree, but I think the fact that Paul Verhoeven accomplishes completely on accident (and it was an accident. He wanted this movie to be a blockbuster drama) that's part of the reason why Showgirls is considered a camp classic, and not just another bad film that nobody remembers. The social commentary isn't what's in the movie. It's knowing what went into making it, and the mindset at the time.

Speed Racers opening scene is one of the best storytelling devices I've ever seen. It lays out the entire fucking backstory in that opening race without coming off as exposition and actually makes you *care* about the characters from the absolute get go. Compare this execution to the pathetic "Hal Jordan looks back to his dad dying while flying a plane" scene in Green Lantern and you can tell just how hard it was to execute that opening scene well.

The big reveal of the bad guy is pretty fucking epic and you *really* hate the fuck out that guy by the end of the scene..

and the finale is just an awesome cut back on the entire movie, it's really like you were there for his rise and appreciate everything that went into him getting to that point. I usually hate movies where the good guy wins and everyone cheers in a stupid fucking hamfisted way at the end.. but this movie was just so goddamned genuine in it's optimism that it works. There wasn't a cynical tongue in cheek "we are laughing at ourselves" moment in the whole movie and it worked.

I could gush over this movie for paragraphs. The funny thing is, even outside of GAF all of my movie buff friends love the fuck out of this movie. It's like everyone expected Speed Racer to be bad, so the reviewers gave it bad reviews and then no one saw it. I think the reviewers had shit written before they even saw this movie.

I would have liked to see Chris Farley get into dramas actually. Comedians usually have a really dark pit of a soul under all of the laughing. Farley moreso than most.

Oh my GOD. WHY!? This is perhaps the worst movie I've ever seen. It's the closest a movie has ever come to being comparable to a glitchy game with a terrible framerate or bad controls, because the way Australia was filmed makes me nauseous and confused. The camera is NEVER still, and not in a good "SO MUCH ACTION GOING ON" kind of way. Even if the acting and everything else was amazing, the filming would make it terrible.

I like that movie!! This scene made it worth watching. Its on netflix too, just remember to check your brain at the door and enjoy the ride.

also +1 on death to smoochy. I think people blindly hated it because Robin Williams was in a movie like every other week.

And I don't think Water World was that bad :/

I never really put much thought into it, but this is really the only explanation. Speed Racer was a just straight-laced underdog story with a shiny coat of cg brilliance but somehow it turned out to be incredibly enthralling and a very satisfying experience.
 
We need to bump the old speed racer thread. It's a comedy gold mine.. pretty much everyone arguing with Solo, then seeing the movie and then agreeing with him.

Myself included I'm pretty sure.

I when In Da House came out I liked Ali G much much more than Cohen's other characters, but I couldn't finish watching that movie.
